"I’ve arrived."
As Ji Anning neared the hotel, she took out her phone and sent a message to Ji Chicheng, telling him she had arrived.
In the past, when she sent him playful messages, she would always add a term of endearment at the beginning. Now, she omitted it, with those two words being taboo, not wanting to touch them.
Ji Chicheng replied with a single character: ’Okay.’
Seeing this one character, Ji Anning recalled the sound of his voice by her ear in days gone by. He was sparing with words, but often one word from him would make one feel as if basking in the spring breeze.
Thinking so, she reached out to open the window. The cold wind blew in, brushing across her face, cool and without a hint of the imagined feeling.
She tilted her head to the side, and in no time, her unpowdered face was blown to a bright red.
"Ma’am, we’ve arrived."
Ji Anning was lost in thought looking out the window, so absorbed that she didn’t notice they had arrived at the hotel entrance until the driver reminded her. She then snapped back to reality, glanced outside, and immediately nodded to the driver with a smile, "Okay, thank you. Could you please wait here for a moment?"
After greeting the driver, Ji Anning pushed the door open and got out of the car. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
"Mommy."
Just as Ji Anning straightened up, she heard Fenfen calling her, with a clear, tender voice. The fatigue on her face faded away as she looked toward the source of the voice.
The little girl was wearing a light rose-pink sleeveless woolen dress with a white cashmere shirt underneath and was running quickly toward her.
She bent down, opened her arms to embrace her, and scooped up the little girl, showering her face with kisses.
Having not seen her for several days, the little one seemed to have gained some weight, her chubby pink cheeks and the milky fragrance of her body making Ji Anning’s eyes moist with each kiss.
"Daddy," Fenfen pointed in the direction from which she had just run.
Ji Anning looked up to see Ji Chicheng’s tall figure approaching them. It was rare to see him in a different colored suit, this time a deep blue one, with the same white shirt as always.
He wasn’t wearing a tie, and his hands were still casually tucked into the pockets of his neatly pressed trousers. As he approached, Ji Anning smiled at him, "I’ll take her out to play and bring her to you in the evening."
Ji Chicheng stopped two steps away from Ji Anning, looked at her, and lightly nodded, "... Okay."
His voice was raspier than she remembered, but still as pleasant, yet she could no longer act coquettishly, only hiding all her stray thoughts behind a smile.
Stay strong. It’s just not being able to hug him, just not being able to kiss him, just that he no longer belongs to her...
He was still the same man she could see and think about.
The curve of Ji Anning’s lips grew wider, when suddenly Ji Chicheng reached out his hand toward her face, moving it slowly forward before stopping just short of touching her.
As if he suddenly came to his senses, he drew his hand back and looked at her cheeks, reddened by the wind from the car window, then spoke in a warm voice, "It’s windy today, why didn’t you wear a mask?"
"It’s not cold," Ji Anning shook her head, keeping the curve of her lips steady, but her eyes had reddened. She sniffled and then said with a smile, "I’ll be going now. I’ll call you when I bring Fenfen over tonight."
With that, she immediately turned and walked toward the taxi she had arrived in.
"Daddy."
Fenfen rested her chin on Ji Anning’s shoulder, pouting and looking at Ji Chicheng, who stood motionless, with a sad, soft voice.
Ji Anning’s heart clenched. She quickened her pace, when suddenly a familiar female voice came from behind them, "Aren’t the three of you going out to play together?"
