Chapter 639: Chapter 631: You Are Not Welcome (Part 6)

Ji Anning didn’t respond to Ji Jingfeng, but still turned around to look for Ji Chicheng.

She was very clear in her heart that the old master’s visit to pay respects to her father was just incidental, finding Ji Chicheng was the real purpose.

Such a prideful man as he, how could he allow his son to take charge of his daughter-in-law’s father’s funeral? Not to mention the associations the media might make, even he, the old man, couldn’t get over that feudal hurdle in his heart.

So, to avoid trouble, she still went to consult with her younger uncle, asking him to leave first with Fenfen. It was just as well, Fenfen wasn’t sleeping well here, and had difficulties with eating; it was very inconvenient.

Ji Jingfeng watched Ji Anning leave through the main gate, his lips curling coldly.

Then he turned his head towards Ji Anning’s mother, Li Fen, "I seem to have seen a photograph of my father-in-law somewhere."

"Is that so?" Li Fen smiled, saying lightly, "It must be a photo taken by Anning, no?"

"It doesn’t seem like it." Ji Jingfeng’s gaze returned to the portrait of Ji Anning’s father, fixating on the clothes he wore in the photo, pondering and recalling for a while before he remembered, "I saw it at my mother’s place, just recently. He was also wearing this uniform, a green military shirt from the army."

His tone was very certain.

Li Fen’s face changed for an instant, but then she quickly resumed her gentle smile, "That’s normal. Your family is a major household; it’s certain that your family would thoroughly investigate Anning and our entire family’s background. So, your mother should indeed have photos of me and Anning’s father."

As she spoke, her gaze seemed to drift, never meeting Jingfeng’s eyes.

Her hands were clasped together, appearing somewhat nervous. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Ji Jingfeng took in all of Li Fen’s behavior without a word, his lips thinning, his gaze once more turning dark as he glanced at the portrait of Ji Anning’s father, his eyes filled with suspicion.

"Mother-in-law, you’re busy. I’ll go check on Anning’s situation."

Ji Jingfeng absent-mindedly nodded to Li Fen and left.

...

"Anning."

As Ji Anning approached the stairway leading to the resting room, a familiar voice of an old man called out to her.

He still hasn’t left?

She halted in her tracks, turning her head towards the direction of the voice. Ji Zhengdao emerged from behind the large stone pillar of the corridor.

Ji Anning gave him a slight nod, "Director Ji."

Ji Zhengdao walked up to her, his gaze deeply scrutinizing her face for a while before he sighed, "Ah, why can’t you understand your grandfather’s painstaking efforts? When you see Fenfen’s eyes, you should clearly understand in your heart, you were wrong, terribly wrong. Why do you insist on continuing the mistake?"

His brows were tightly furrowed, his expression a mix of helplessness and world-weariness.

Fenfen’s eyes were the greatest pain in Ji Anning’s heart at the moment. She couldn’t help but raise her hand, gripping the stair railing tightly before she gathered enough courage to slightly tilt her chin up, meeting Ji Zhengdao’s gaze with a smile, "Yes, I was wrong. But since I’ve already erred, paid the price, why not continue on this wrong path? Perhaps, persisting in my error might lead to the right path."

Her tone was part serious, part jest.

Ji Zhengdao was displeased upon hearing this, his temper flaring, but he still had to suppress his anger, lowering his voice, "Anning, the blood of the Ji Family flows in your veins too; you are also a member of the Ji Family. Are you really going to watch as everything belonging to the Ji Family is taken by someone who has no blood relation to the Ji Family?"
