So young, yet handling things methodically and neatly.
Before long, both fingers were wrapped in band-aids, and the bleeding stopped.
Andrew Hughes held her hand, looked up slightly, and softly asked, "Mom, can we not cook and eat out instead?"
"We made plenty of dumplings; we just need to steam them to eat," Crystal Hughes smiled brightly, stroked his head, and gently asked, "How about we just have dumplings for breakfast today?"
Andrew asked suspiciously, "Just steam them and they’re ready?"
"Of course."
"...Alright then."
Andrew had to go along with her idea.
Crystal was pleased and asked him, "Can you wash up by yourself?"
"Yes."
Andrew nodded.
"Then you go first," Crystal curved her lips, "Mommy will steam the dumplings right away."
"Okay."
Andrew agreed.
As he walked a few steps, he thought of something and turned back to look at Crystal, "Mom, where’s Camilo?"
Crystal paused for a moment.
She lowered her eyelids and said softly, "He left."
"Didn’t he stay for breakfast?"
"Hmm," Crystal responded, leaned slightly forward, and lifted Andrew’s hand, "Mom doesn’t like that uncle; let’s not keep in touch with him anymore, okay?"
Andrew asked, "Did he bully you?"
"No. I just don’t like him."
Frowning, Andrew pondered for a moment and said, "He bought the medicine last night."
"We’ll pay him back."
"...He also gave me a lot of things," Andrew muttered.
"Did you thank him?"
"Hmm."
Crystal pinched his cheek, "Then it’s fine; if you received it, you received it."
"Hmm."
Andrew breathed a sigh of relief.
He looked back every few steps.
He wanted to say that last night Camilo had taught him a few tricks—how to make friends in kindergarten. However, seeing Crystal’s attitude, Andrew thought for a while and decided not to tell her about it.
*
It was still early.
Crystal steamed the dumplings, made two cups of milk, and accompanied Andrew for breakfast, and it turned out they had plenty of time left.
Seeing Andrew’s morning anxiety and tension, Crystal hesitated for a few minutes and finally made up her mind.
"I’ll tidy up a bit and take you to kindergarten later, okay?"
Andrew looked worried, "But, is your cold better?"
"It’s much better."
Crystal smiled and raised her eyebrows.
"...Hmm."
Andrew nodded.
Letting Andrew wait at home for a moment, Crystal quickly took a shower and rummaged through the wardrobe to find her favorite dress to put on.
Then, she spent ten minutes putting on makeup.
The fatigue and illness vanished under the concealer, and she looked energetic.
After examining herself in the mirror for two minutes, she adjusted her hairstyle.
Andrew paced back and forth in the living room with his backpack, occasionally glancing towards the bedroom.
Marcus Shaw had said, never rush mom when she’s getting ready, or it could end badly.
However—
The time was running out.
"Andrew!"
The lively voice eased Andrew’s anxiety.
Andrew looked up and saw Crystal in a long dress; she looked totally different from before.
"Do I look nice? Like your sister?"
Holding her handbag, Crystal smiled faintly, twirled in front of Andrew, the hem of her dress spinning and creating a gentle breeze.
"...Hmm."
Andrew could never understand why Crystal aspired to be his sister.
However, after emphasizing twice that Crystal is his mom, not his sister, and being scolded by her, Andrew never contradicted Crystal’s words again.
Sister... Well, sister it is.
His mom sometimes seemed even more childish than Marcus Shaw.
Checking her phone, Crystal asked, "Is it almost time?"
"Hmm."
"Let’s go."
Crystal quickly grabbed Andrew, hurriedly leading him towards the entrance.
"Got everything you need?"
"Hmm."
"Did we forget anything?" 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
"No."
"Alright then." Crystal changed her shoes, gave the still-tying-his-shoes Andrew a big hug, and kissed his forehead, "My son really makes things easy."
Andrew: "..."
"Come here, your dear mom will help you tie your shoes."
Crystal let him go, moved his hand from the laces, and tied them for him.
She tied a pretty bow.
After she was done, she asked, "Do they look nice?"
"...Yes, they look nice," Andrew nodded in agreement.
Even though he didn’t see any difference.
Crystal beamed with joy, took Andrew’s hand, and led him out the door, "Let’s go, off to school."
A lively voice.
As if she were the one going to school.
Andrew obediently followed behind her.
Leaving the building, the two of them encountered other parents also dropping their kids off. One little girl, around three years old, was throwing a tantrum and refusing to go to kindergarten, so her father picked her up and coaxed her while heading outside.
The rain was still falling softly, and the father was holding an umbrella in one hand and carrying the little girl effortlessly with the other.
Seeing this, Crystal had a sudden thought and tightened her grip slightly on the umbrella handle, then turned to Andrew, "Son, want me to carry you?"
Glancing at Crystal’s thin shoulders, Andrew pressed his lips and shook his head.
Crystal pouted, feeling a bit disappointed, "But I’ve never properly carried you."
Andrew shook his head again, swayed her hand, and seriously said with determination, "When I grow up, I’ll carry you."
"Why are you so good?" Tears welled up in her eyes, but Crystal smiled brightly, ruffled Andrew’s hair, and sighed softly, "Mom hasn’t taken good care of you."
"Grandpa says you’re doing meaningful work," Andrew’s voice was young but articulated each word clearly, "It’s not easy to find meaningful work in one’s life. We have to support you."
Crystal was taken aback.
"Mom, Grandpa said you’re sick," Andrew said softly, looking down and kicking a pebble at his feet, then looked up again with pure, clear eyes and worriedly asked, "Will it get better like a cold?"
Crystal’s body stiffened.
The fine rain fell on the umbrella, creating a soft sound, a dense crossover like a soothing symphony. A gentle breeze lifted her skirt and brushed against her skin, refreshing and gentle.
"It will."
Bending down, Crystal seriously looked into Andrew’s eyes and softly said, "Once I’ve had enough rest, I’ll get better."
