"Hiss."
The sound of Crystal Hughes taking a deep breath in managed to pull Camilo Nogueira’s thoughts back.
The knife lay flat on the cutting board, pressing down on a chopstick, with its sharp end tilted upward. When Crystal Hughes went to pick up the chopstick, she didn’t pay attention, and her finger bumped into the knife’s edge, instantly cutting a gash.
In an instant, blood flowed out, following the patterns of her skin, quickly running down to the back of her hand. The spreading red was shocking to see.
Yet Crystal Hughes stopped, looking down, her expression calm as she stared at the cut and the blood, with a blank expression, as if lost in thought.
After a few seconds, Camilo Nogueira finally couldn’t hold back and stepped into the kitchen.
Crystal Hughes, who had been distracted, heard the footsteps and looked up somewhat dazedly, catching sight of Camilo Nogueira’s figure unexpectedly.
"Why didn’t you—"
Crystal Hughes inquired in surprise.
However, before she could finish asking, Camilo Nogueira grabbed her hand, pulling her aside. His fingers turned on the faucet, placing her injured hand under the water.
As soon as the water hit, Crystal Hughes felt a sting, her finger shifted slightly, instinctively trying to retract.
But, because Camilo Nogueira held her wrist, she didn’t manage to pull back.
"Does it hurt?" Camilo Nogueira turned his head to glance at her, then softly comforted, "Bear with it for a moment."
Crystal Hughes pressed her lips together, staying silent.
She had just been wrapping dumplings, her hands were dusted with dry flour and dough. The flour was easy to wash off, but the sticky dough required scrubbing from her hands.
Once the blood was washed away, Camilo Nogueira reached out, avoiding her wound, and cleaned off the sticky dough bit by bit.
His fingers were very pretty, with distinct joints, slightly rough at the fingertips and palms.
Crystal Hughes was just the opposite, her skin soft and smooth. When his fingers covered hers, she sensed it clearly, every move gentle and considerate.
He’s always like this.
Halfway through the washing, Crystal Hughes’s mind, which had stalled, finally rebooted. She glanced at the man beside her, and suddenly, forcefully wrenched her hand away from his grasp.
Water splashed, scattering around.
Camilo Nogueira’s movements stopped.
With her brows slightly furrowed, Crystal Hughes stepped aside, putting some distance between them, her voice indifferent and aloof, "Mr. Nogueira, I can manage myself."
Feeling a momentary discomfort, Camilo Nogueira paused, standing silently to the side.
Crystal Hughes lowered her head, avoiding looking at him. She simply washed her hands a bit and then turned off the faucet.
After doing all this, she turned to walk towards the living room.
Camilo Nogueira followed her.
"Why haven’t you left?"
Reaching the coffee table, Crystal Hughes pulled out a tissue, wiping away the residual flour.
"Andrew asked me to stay and rest."
Camilo Nogueira answered, walking directly to the dining table.
He picked up last night’s medicine bag, opened it, and found a few band-aids tucked at the bottom among a pile of medicine boxes.
—These were given by the store clerk.
Having thought they were useless, he hadn’t expected them to come in handy so soon.
He tore off two band-aids and walked towards Crystal Hughes.
Unexpectedly, Crystal Hughes turned to face him, her eyes and brow filled with resistance, "I told you to stay away from him."
"Crystal."
Camilo Nogueira lifted his eyes, grabbed her wrist, and suddenly pulled her towards him.
Instinctively, Crystal Hughes stepped back.
But Camilo Nogueira extended his other hand, holding her waist, pulling her into his embrace, preventing her from moving.
Narrowing his eyes slightly, Camilo Nogueira stared at her intently, asking, "Where did you find a son who looks so much like me?"
He doesn’t fool around outside.
So, when he saw Andrew Hughes, he felt familiar but didn’t overthink it.
The only possibility came from Crystal Hughes, who had clearly told him she had aborted the child, making it impossible for her to have his child.
However—
Andrew Hughes’s age matched.
And he resembled him.
The impact was too great last night, and he hadn’t responded at the time. A whole night passed, could he still not comprehend it?
Crystal Hughes looked up at him, her face slightly pale, "Are you crazy, going around claiming sons?"
"I’m not crazy." Unlike her emotional outburst, Camilo Nogueira remained very calm, asking, "Why did you keep him?"
"I didn’t!"
Crystal Hughes gritted her teeth, glaring at him.
Camilo Nogueira furrowed his brow, "How is such a coincidence possible?"
"..."
Crystal Hughes breathed with difficulty, sweating lightly, her body enveloped in a layer of cold.
After a few seconds of silence, her breath steadied slightly, "Rest assured, although we are just ordinary folks, we at least have a basic conscience; we wouldn’t do something like having a child just to extort you."
Camilo Nogueira’s eyes darkened inch by inch as he said, "I never thought that."
