Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Not Familiar

Scarlett Shaw was currently in Jasper Spencer’s car. If she knew all the crazy things Julian Ford was thinking, she’d definitely suggest that this financial mogul try his hand at being a director. He sure knew how to add drama.

But fortunately, she didn’t know.

So her mood was absolutely delightful.

The skiing area was at the top of the mountain, and private cars weren’t usually allowed up. But this Jasper Spencer seemed to have some connections. Not only could he drive up the mountain, but one could also clearly feel that his car had been modified.

While gearing up for skiing, Scarlett asked Yana Yarrow, "How did you meet Jasper Spencer?"

Jasper Spencer had an air about him. Although it wasn’t the same lofty demeanor as Julian Ford’s, it was clear he was another aloof type.

He didn’t seem like the kind of person who’d come whenever called.

Yana rubbed her nose, "He’s my matchmaking prospect."

Scarlett’s face was all question marks: ??

"Your matchmaking prospect, and you let me see his chest muscles? Girl, you’re really generous."

"Come on, you know I’m still young. I’m not thinking about marriage yet." Yana was unusually frustrated.

Scarlett thought for a moment and said, "So, today was actually a matchmaking meeting between you and Jasper Spencer?"

Yana nodded honestly.

"I really have no interest in Jasper Spencer. He’s not my type at all. But my family insists on setting us up, so I brought you along to not be so bored."

Scarlett understood and didn’t mind it at all.

Once they were ready in their skiing gear and walking towards the slopes, Yana seemed to remember something and said, "I’ve heard some things about Jasper Spencer. They say he used to pursue Zoe Sutton very devotedly, but she ended up dating Julian Ford, which made him furious."

Scarlett was both amused and exasperated, "You’re not interested in him, yet you dig into his past."

Yana: "Of course, I need to know what he dislikes so I can make him dislike me enough to tell the Spencer Family that we’re not suitable."

Scarlett: "You really have a way with things."

Yana took it as a compliment, smiled smugly, and then, glancing up, saw Jasper Spencer standing at the edge of the ski slope. She immediately changed her path, saying, "Scarlett, I’m going to play somewhere else first. You can ski with Jasper Spencer."

Scarlett: "..."

Yana was gone in a flash, and Scarlett, who couldn’t ski, couldn’t catch up. She had to walk slowly to Jasper Spencer.

"Yana ran into something and got delayed. Why don’t you ski first?"

Scarlett said.

Jasper Spencer: "I think she purposely delayed because she didn’t want to come."

Scarlett: "..."

Jasper Spencer glanced at her, "Don’t know how to ski?"

Scarlett silently nodded.

Jasper Spencer guided her with some key moves. The speed and posture weren’t important; safety was the priority. Scarlett learned quickly, and twenty minutes later she was skiing with some skill.

She wasn’t familiar with Jasper Spencer, and aside from asking some skiing questions, they didn’t talk about much else.

The ski slopes started to get crowded. Scarlett was brushed by a fast skier next to her, lost her balance a bit, and fell sideways, hitting her back into an embrace.

She quickly straightened up, turned, and said, "Sorry."

The person who caught her was wearing goggles and a ski hat, concealing his face. But he was tall, with long legs and broad shoulders, and had a cold aura. Scarlett instinctively took a couple of steps back to distance herself.

She wasn’t sure if it was an illusion, but the man’s aura seemed even colder.

Jasper Spencer took another look at the man.

He suddenly asked Scarlett, "I heard from Yana that you’re with Veridian’s Investment Division?"

Scarlett nodded.

Jasper Spencer: "Then you must have dealt with Julian Ford quite a bit."

When he mentioned Julian Ford, there was an unfriendly tone of familiarity in Jasper Spencer’s voice. It reminded Scarlett of the gossip Yana had just mentioned.

Scarlett: "I’m just a regular employee, so I don’t really interact with President Ford, nor have I ever dealt with him."

"Really."

Jasper Spencer’s lips curled slightly.

From his brown eyes, Scarlett sensed some amusement.

What Jasper Spencer said next made her understand why he had such an expression.

Jasper Spencer’s gaze fell back on the man who had held Scarlett, and he said with interest, "No wonder you couldn’t recognize your President Ford right in front of you."

Scarlett felt a chill down her back.

At the same time, Julian Ford removed his goggles, revealing his calm, dark eyes. He glanced at her lightly.

Jasper Spencer grinned, "It’s been a while, Julian Ford." 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Julian Ford: "You’re still as idle as ever."

Jasper Spencer: "Not as busy as you, being engaged and all. Congratulations."

The two men maintained calm expressions and a relaxed tone. Scarlett felt like the air around her was suffocating. She turned to slip away, but Jasper Spencer unceremoniously hooked her by the back of her collar.

"Where are you running off to?"

Scarlett: "I’m going skiing."

Jasper Spencer: "I’ll join you."

"No need."

Scarlett’s rejection was just out of her mouth when Jasper Spencer had already dragged her along for a ski. They only stopped once they were far enough from Julian Ford, when Jasper Spencer suddenly asked, "You’re sure you don’t know Julian Ford well?"

Scarlett shivered, "I really don’t know him well."

Jasper Spencer gave her a scrutinizing, half-smiling look.

Back in the day, when he pursued Zoe Sutton, he made sure to know everything about Julian Ford. It was obvious that the man had been unhappy just now. Others might not notice, but he could.

Jasper Spencer wasn’t interested in Scarlett Shaw.

But he was very keen on making Julian Ford unhappy. Just when he almost had Zoe Sutton, Julian Ford’s words had whisked her away.

That guy was like an invincible egg, with no visible weaknesses. Jasper Spencer hadn’t had a chance to settle the score to this day.

His instincts told him Scarlett Shaw was a breakthrough.

Scarlett had no idea that Jasper Spencer’s mind was already buzzing with a plan.

But she’d been under Julian Ford’s observation for half a year. The man’s quick wits weren’t for good intentions. Scarlett instinctively distanced herself from Jasper Spencer and skied away.

Busy breaking free from Jasper Spencer, Scarlett skied further and further away, with fewer people around her.

This part of the ski area was newly developed, with incomplete signage. Surrounded by nothing but white, Scarlett’s skiing skills were still shaky; her legs were aching, and she was looking for a place to rest when a cold voice called from behind:

"Poor skills, yet daring to wander off."

Scarlett naturally recognized that voice.

Instead of looking back, she sped up and skied forward.

But as a greenhorn, how could she shake off Julian Ford? He effortlessly followed her, playing with his ski pole, moving at his own pace. Scarlett felt as though an invisible kite string was tied to her, being toyed with by Julian Ford.

Anxious and flustered, Scarlett unthinkingly fell to the ground.

Standing leisurely in front of her, seemingly unwavering, the man gently mocked:

"I warned you. With poor skills, you shouldn’t wander off."

He enjoyed her misfortune, watching from the sidelines.

Scarlett really had no desire to engage with him.

Propping herself up with difficulty, she tried to stand, but her heavy ski suit and skis defied her every effort.

Finally, she resigned herself to sitting down.

Julian Ford lowered his gaze, silently watching her.

The snow was chilly, with some mud-spattered snow melting into droplets on her face, looking like tears. Her body ran cold, and after just a short while outside, her nose and cheeks were red.

Julian Ford leaned down, wrapping a single arm around her waist, and leisurely helped her to her feet.

As soon as she was steady, Scarlett instinctively pulled away from him.

Julian Ford’s voice was slightly cold, "You’re becoming more adept at burning bridges."
