Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Overstepping Boundaries

She knew that a dog can’t vomit ivory.

No way would Julian Ford, that dog, purely compliment her.

If she still couldn’t hear the suspicion, mockery, and dissatisfaction in his words, she would have wasted these two months with Julian Ford.

Scarlett Shaw thought for a moment and whispered furtively, "President Ford, you know I’m currently single. Occasionally, when friends introduce me to some guys, I can’t always refuse. I’d just meet them for a while, it doesn’t mean anything."

Julian Ford: "Is there a knife to your throat, forcing you not to refuse?"

"..."

Scarlett mumbled softly, "Only the state official is allowed to set fire, while the commoners can’t even light a lamp."

Julian Ford: "Speak human language."

Scarlett gathered her courage and said boldly, "President Ford, don’t you also keep dating women every other day? I haven’t restricted your personal freedom."

Julian Ford lifted his lips slightly, glancing at her, "Are you comparing yourself to me? Do you even know your own place?"

Scarlett could still converse with Julian Ford calmly up until these few sentences.

But this last statement thrown at her was just too harsh.

Scarlett was displeased too, "I can’t compare with you, but for you to pin this on me right away, it’s just unreasonable."

The discontent in her heart, if left unsaid, she could hold it in.

Once spoken out, it was like a flood breaking the dam, impossible to stop.

"I explained it nicely to you, yet you won’t let it go. Just because we slept together, I can’t even make friends?"

"Is there no basic trust between people?"

Julian Ford: "Who stopped you from making friends? Are you meeting people who just want to be friends with you?"

Scarlett: "The introductions are also from my friends. If I keep refusing now, and later I really plan to date, they’ll stop introducing guys after being rejected so many times."

"Scarlett."

Julian Ford’s voice suddenly turned cold, like it was soaked in ice.

"You’re with me, and you still dare to think about dating?"

"Why not? I can’t stay like this with you forever. Won’t you get married?"

Scarlett even felt that the possibility of Julian Ford getting married was much higher than her own.

She’s burdened with debt, and what she wants most now is to pay it off, buy a house, and live well. Whether to date or marry, those are things she would consider much later.

But Julian Ford was different.

He’s already introduced someone to his parents. Who knows, maybe they’ll set a date tomorrow?

Julian Ford’s gaze locked on Scarlett, and the coldness in his eyes gradually turned into an unfathomable contemplation and scrutiny as time passed.

Compared to Scarlett’s slight agitation, he was extremely calm.

"President Ford."

Aaron Carson’s timid voice suddenly rang out.

Julian Ford turned slightly.

Aaron Carson pointed not far away, "Miss Walsh is looking for you."

As Julian Ford raised his eyes, Lynn Walsh noticed him and walked over, "Didn’t you say you forgot something? Haven’t you found it yet?"

Julian Ford still spoke in his usual calm tone, "Found it, but it’s not to my liking."

Lynn Walsh: "Then forget it, let’s go."

Julian Ford didn’t spare a second glance at Scarlett and turned away, his pace steady as he walked off.

Aaron Carson, having been at a certain distance earlier, caught some of the intense exchange between the two.

Unable to hold back, he said to Scarlett, "You’re pretty bold. No one has ever dared to talk to President Ford like that. Don’t forget, aside from that relationship, you’re also an employee at Veridian."

"..."

Scarlett pressed her lips together but said nothing.

Aaron hesitated for a moment, then added,

"Even though what I’m saying might sound unpleasant, I must remind you, considering just that relationship, you really shouldn’t go provoking President Ford."

"With what just happened, you did overstep a bit."

Aaron didn’t explicitly say it, but he even felt that Scarlett and Julian Ford earlier seemed like a couple having a tiff.

This kind of sign, no matter who it concerns, is never a good thing.

Especially for Scarlett.

Given her background and family status, if she were truly to develop inappropriate feelings for Julian Ford, it would spell disaster.

...

After finishing dinner at Mr. and Mrs. Carson’s house,

Aaron was ready to drive Scarlett back, but she directly refused.

From leaving the supermarket till now, although Scarlett’s exterior showed no significant change, compared to earlier in the day, her cheer was noticeably lacking, so he didn’t insist.

Scarlett walked alone toward the subway station.

Her mind revisited the events of the afternoon in the supermarket, the words spoken and heard.

Undeniably, something seemed to have signs of veering out of control unknowingly.

Scarlett unconsciously furrowed her brows.

As she was deep in thought, a honk sounded unexpectedly near her ear.

Turning her head, she saw the familiar Bentley parked by the street. The window rolled down, revealing the sharply defined, perfect profile of Julian Ford.

"Get in."

His expression was calm and indifferent, just like that night at the bar.

Scarlett opened the passenger door and sat inside.

Inside the car, it was just Scarlett and Julian Ford. Whether it was the strange atmosphere from the supermarket lingering or not, neither of them took the initiative to speak first.

Turning a corner, Julian Ford casually said, "Didn’t you say you were just passing by? Why are you only heading back now?"

He held the steering wheel with one hand, his long, elegant fingers lightly tapping against the surface.

Scarlett: "I stopped by Assistant Carson’s house for a meal."

Julian Ford: "Just that?"

Scarlett: "Just that."

"You better not be lying to me."

When Julian Ford said this, the color of his pupils deepened slightly, his expression calm as water, leaving one uncertain if he genuinely believed her words.

Scarlett, though agitated that afternoon, had thought a lot afterward and indeed felt she might have overreacted.

What good would it do for a worker like her to get angry with her boss?

Might as well think things through a little.

Scarlett: "President Ford, what I said earlier was out of line. Please, be the bigger person and don’t take it to heart."

Julian Ford: "How was it out of line?"

Scarlett touched her nose, "I shouldn’t have commented on your personal affairs."

"Lynn Walsh was invited by my mother to our house."

Julian Ford shot her a sidelong glance and said:

"You’re quite smart, can’t you tell I’m not familiar with her? Didn’t I throw her high heels into the trash for your sake last time?"

Scarlett: "President Ford, those shoes were clearly meant for you."

Yet in his words, it became an act of sticking up for her.

Truly twisting cause and effect.

Julian Ford uncharacteristically didn’t argue back against her retort, "I don’t have a habit of messing around with multiple women at once. Haven’t you figured that out, given the time you’ve spent with me?"

Given Julian Ford’s usual cold and distant demeanor, explaining so much was indeed rare.

Given the chance to reconcile, Scarlett naturally climbed down the same steps.

Hastily, she said, "Your character is noble and disciplined, naturally you wouldn’t mess around. I was just impulsive, said some rash things. Whatever you do is perfectly fine."

Julian Ford: "Just because you were impulsive?"
