Chapter 36: Chapter 36: In Your Room?

Julian Ford’s words were harsh.

Even Scarlett Shaw, accustomed to his sharp tongue, couldn’t help feeling a chill.

She moved off his lap, shrank to the edge of the bed, hesitated repeatedly, but finally spoke under his icy gaze, "So, you knew, didn’t you?"

Julian Ford looked at her coldly, "So what if I knew? Do you think you have the right for me to tell you?"

Julian Ford never regarded her with any importance, naturally disdaining to lie. In other words, whether he wanted her to know depended solely on his mood.

Scarlett’s fingers trembled at her side.

"You’re just like him. Both of you are playing me, right? Watching me fall apart, is that fun?"

She spoke with an eerily calm demeanor, her mind even clearer than ever before.

Julian Ford chuckled softly, his eyes indifferent, with a hint of mockery.

He leaned closer to her, gently yet dangerously tuck her stray hair behind her ear.

"I’ve wanted to play with you from the start, haven’t you known that? You put yourself here, Scarlett, so claiming you’re a victim now is meaningless."

His slender fingers lifted Scarlett’s chin.

As he bowed his head to kiss her, he tasted the metallic tang of blood in her mouth.

When he raised his eyes again, he saw her eyes were intensely red, not with the obvious anger she usually showed when upset, but evident she was enduring her emotions.

Julian Ford’s natural aura was calm and detached, with a strong presence. However, his mood at the moment was extremely poor. Even for Aaron Carson, hearing those jibes would have been unbearable.

Yet Scarlett didn’t shed a single tear.

Clearly, back when she could cry for Ryan Ford, her feelings for him ran deep.

Julian Ford’s interest in Scarlett largely stemmed from her obedient demeanor. Now, faced with her defiance, he felt a deep-seated annoyance.

This annoyance was something Julian Ford didn’t bother to hide.

Scarlett noticed this and immediately got off the bed.

Julian Ford’s voice was cold, "Get out."

Although he was never particularly gentle with her, Scarlett’s time with Julian had been long enough to discern that most of the time, his harsh words were just his way of being sharp-tongued; his mood wasn’t truly that bad.

But now, this cold and merciless command to leave had an air of finality.

Scarlett said nothing.

She left Julian Ford’s room without turning back.

In the early hours of the morning, the hotel corridor was deserted, cold air piercing one’s bones, and Scarlett clearly heard her own rapid breathing.

She returned to her room, only to find that Chloe Grant had locked the door from inside again.

Handling matters with Julian Ford was exhausting, and Scarlett’s legs were already shaking. Paired with his verbal assault, not only was her body weak, but she was mentally drained.

At this hour, disturbing other colleagues in their rooms would be inappropriate.

Moreover, the marks on her body, if seen by others, would only bring more trouble for herself.

Scarlett decided to head to the first floor and rest on the lobby sofa.

However, despite the lobby being a public space, Scarlett was too anxious to sleep. As she thought to take out her phone to pass the time, she found her pocket empty.

Scarlett’s heart skipped a beat.

The phone was likely left in Julian Ford’s room.

The two of them had parted on bad terms, and even though he was the boss, Scarlett couldn’t possibly go back immediately to retrieve it. Given Julian Ford’s venomous words and his cold demeanor when he told her to "get out," she had no idea how he would insult her again.

Going back now would just be asking for humiliation.

As dawn approached, Scarlett suddenly remembered that while transferring work with Aaron Carson, he had mentioned his room number.

After some thought, she decided to take the elevator to Aaron Carson’s floor and knocked on his door.

To be fair, as Julian Ford’s personal assistant, Aaron Carson was not only awake at this hour but also impeccably dressed in a full suit.

Seeing it was Scarlett at the door, he was momentarily surprised, "Shouldn’t you be in President Ford’s room?"

Scarlett didn’t know why, but after chatting with Aaron Carson the night before, she felt a sibling-like bond with him.

She didn’t explain the whole situation and only asked, "My room has been locked by my roommate. Could I rest here for a while?"

Aaron Carson paused before letting her in.

He handed her a cup of hot water.

At this season abroad, it’s much colder than in Capitoline, especially at this hour before dawn, when the chill is most biting.

At the door, Aaron Carson had noticed Scarlett’s lips turning pale from the cold, indicating she had been outside for quite a while.

Considering this, he casually asked, "Were you kicked out by President Ford?"

Scarlett drank the hot water and replied nonchalantly, "Mhm."

Aaron Carson paused and asked, "Did you upset him? Given President Ford’s demeanor and manners, he doesn’t seem like the type to kick a girl out of a room in the middle of the night."

Scarlett chuckled, her eyes showing clear disagreement.

Aaron Carson: "The day with Mr. Barlow, being late for such a significant meeting, you saw how President Ford didn’t lose his temper, didn’t he? Not only did he not get angry, but he also gave you the chance to connect with the client. You know it yourself."

Scarlett didn’t argue with that.

Most bosses only care about results, not the process. She and Ryan Ford’s matter indeed delayed work, and Julian Ford not only didn’t fire her but instead allowed her to demonstrate in front of such a crucial client, which indeed sowed respect and appreciation in Scarlett for Julian Ford.

Of course, the little appreciation she had completely dissipated after last night.

Seeing Scarlett slightly moved, Aaron Carson continued, "With President Ford’s temper, unless it’s something particularly aggravating, he usually doesn’t lose his temper. Think carefully, did you say anything to hit a nerve?"

"..."

The turning point with Julian Ford was when she questioned him about whether he knew Ryan Ford’s purpose in approaching her.

But wasn’t it Julian Ford who first mentioned Ryan Ford?

She was merely following along to find out the truth.

Moreover, being played by Ryan Ford hurt her, and Julian Ford, as the brother who should bear some responsibility, did not get blamed by her, yet Julian Ford had the audacity to be the first to lose his temper.

Scarlett didn’t continue the topic but only said, "Assistant Carson, my phone was left in Julian Ford’s room. Could you help retrieve it for me later? Once back in Capitoline, I’ll treat you to dinner."

Aaron Carson looked at her unexpectedly.

While Scarlett appeared gentle and calm, even though she was frozen and disheveled, she didn’t showing signs of anger.

However, the fact that she dared to call the boss by name suggests this girl had a strong personality.

He agreed readily, "A small favor, no need for the courtesy."

Scarlett thanked him.

Aaron Carson glanced around the room and said, "If you don’t mind, feel free to rest on the bed, or I can get you another room."

"I’ll just lie on the sofa for a bit."

Scarlett snuggled into the sofa with a blanket. The room was warm, and after a sleepless night, she was utterly exhausted, falling asleep almost as soon as she closed her eyes.

Aaron Carson sat in a chair for a while. When he felt it was time, he left the room and took the elevator to the twenty-fifth floor.

Veridian had a remote meeting scheduled for this morning, which Julian Ford was to attend via video; he came to perform the equipment setup in advance.

After preparing the equipment, ordering breakfast from the hotel, Aaron Carson turned to Julian Ford and said, "President Ford, Scarlett Shaw said she left her phone in your room. She asked me to retrieve it."

Julian Ford had just taken a sip of coffee and, upon hearing this, his expression remained unchanged, with only a faint response, "Retrieve it? Where to?"

Aaron Carson: "Scarlett’s room was locked by her roommate. She couldn’t return, so she’s currently resting in my room."

The porcelain cup holding the coffee fell to the table, making a crisp sound.

Julian Ford’s eyes remained calm, his dark eyes deep.

His slender fingers lightly tapped the table.

"In your room?"
