The four demons saw their new superior express such sentiments and did not think much of it, assuming it was a boyish curiosity. They sat cross-legged, held the fragments in their hands, and slowly absorbed them. Pei Yan, sitting on the bed, was not in a hurry and listened to music with headphones on, tilting his head with interest as he watched the scene unfold before him.
After more than an hour, the four demons finished their meditation and absorption in succession, experiencing a tangible increase in their strength. The four turned over and knelt again to express their gratitude to Pei Yan for his generosity.
Looking at Belina, who was showering him with flattering words, Pei Yan sensed the response of the core fused into the four bodies with a snap of his fingers. He smiled contentedly and said, "Since the rewards are given, it's time to talk about the rules of working under me. First, I don't like traitors. If anyone acts duplicitously behind my back, maintains ties with previous forces, and leaks my information, you should know I have my ways."
Upon hearing this, the four exclaimed they dared not, swearing never to betray. Pei Yan ignored this and continued, "Also, your demon names are too cumbersome to remember, I'm too lazy to memorize them, so from now on, I'll give you new names."
At these words, the four who were eager to pledge their loyalty were immediately stunned, their faces showing displeasure and anger, yet they dared not make a fuss. The atmosphere in the room became tense, and the newly formed friendly relationship seemed to fall instantly into awkward silence.
"Not satisfied?" Pei Yan, the instigator, carelessly laughed and asked in reply,
"Sir, we don't have such a rule here. Even the proudest noble direct descendants wouldn't make their subordinates abandon their original surname; this would be considered a betrayal of ancestors in our race, a great disgrace." Dassler replied respectfully, despite the pressure.
"Indeed, sir! You can call our names, they're easy to remember, I'm called…"
"Are you teaching me how to do things?" Pei Yan tilted his head to interrupt another demon's compliant voice, sarcastically said, "It seems like you've misunderstood our relationship; first, don't call me Sir, but Master. You're not qualified for an upper-echelon relationship; you are only fit to be servants, and I have no need nor interest in remembering the names of servants."
Upon hearing this, even Belina, who was previously most afraid of death, couldn't help but show resentment in her eyes. Servants? They were high-ranking demons! Even prominent groups were keen to win them over, accompanied by entourages wherever they go, only to end up as the lowest-ranking servants here?
"Unsatisfied? Hmph!" Seeing through their thoughts, Pei Yan sneered, "I knew you wouldn't be satisfied. Oaths? They sound good—swearing loyal allegiance and never betraying. There's nothing less reliable than oaths in this world."
At this, the Tai Chi Map in Pei Yan's right eye rotated slightly, and he lightly hooked his finger at them, followed by four shrill cries echoing through the room.
Hearing the cries, Wang Wenze outside the door quickly rushed in to check the situation, only to see the once arrogant high-ranking demons curled up into a big shrimp shape, rolling back and forth on the ground with twisted expressions of agony, howling intermittently from their throats.
"This?" Wang Wenze looked at Pei Yan with a puzzled expression.
"Brother! Step out, I'm disciplining them, and this matter should not be disclosed to anyone, especially to Su Xiang, make sure he doesn't know," Pei Yan responded in Mandarin.
"Got it!"
After Wang Wenze exited the room, closed the door, Pei Yan ceased manipulating the four and casually asked, "How did that feel just now?"
"Huff, huff, huff, huff!" Dassler lay on the ground, breathing heavily in fresh air, drenched in sweat in just a moment of agony far surpassing any previous torment he had suffered. Six bursts of energy rampaged through his body out of nowhere, sometimes vital force made his whole body itch unbearably, sometimes life drained rapidly plunging him into the abyss, sometimes like fiery torment then icy cold invaded incessantly, such torment being truly a hellish plight where neither survival nor death came easy.
Struggling to look at Pei Yan, who sat at the bedside watching him with a semblance of a smile. Dassler cried out mournfully, "You, you, you actually tampered with the Demon God Core, this is a rebellion punishable by death! Aren't you afraid of the Demon God's wrath?"
"Tsk tsk tsk! Such rudeness deserves punishment." Pei Yan said while activating his right eye to manipulate the source lurking in their bodies again, rekindling their cries of misery.
After a moment, Pei Yan finished the punishment, gazing at the four splayed on the ground like dead fish. He rose and opened the door before returning to his place, pointing outside and smiling, "Now you can go complaining about me. To complain to Xila, the Demon God's envoy is your option, but remember that wasting my source fragment implies a reminder: If you proceed, the result will be the demise of your personhood, the obliteration of your family's members with no remnants, if you don't believe, by all means try, I shall not hinder you."
After speaking, Pei Yan took out a cigarette, lit it, and leisurely smoked it cross-legged on the bed. After he finished the cigarette and noticed four people having no intention to leave, he flicked the cigarette butt towards Dassler dismissively, "Since you're scared to leave, then roll up and don't lie like a dead dog so annoyingly."
Humiliated once more, the four no longer felt the previous resistance, forcing their quaking bodies to roll and crawl from the ground into a sitting position, this time kneeling with both knees before Pei Yan, not daring to utter a word.
"Just the right posture, isn't it! Dogs without homes and masters who betray aren't worthy of moralizing in front of me." Pei Yan said glancing at outside window, scoffing, "Soon, you'll see, Dieterma and the overseer Little Friedrich, the guilty families behind this event, will be uprooted with annihilation of all members. As newcomers from the rising noble faction accompanying you finding no punishment, and your families receiving commended awards, how do you think the rising nobles will perceive you? Will the direct descent nobles embrace you whose origins are unknown?"
Kneeling on the ground, they trembled more severely, daring not to breathe more. Pei Yan, seeing the intimidation effective, turned smilingly, "You needn't worry much, nor feel aggrieved. Accompany me and you'll not be mistreated; I reward according to merit, punish according to fault. Your families in the Holy City will be cared for by the Demon God and direct noble families introduced by me. After this matter is resolved, I might lift the constraints within you restoring your freedom."
With his words concluded, Pei Yan rose and left the room, no longer surrounded by their previous oaths of allegiance, leaving only the relentless thuds of head-to-floor clashing echoing within.
