Chapter 155 - Ace, Get Over Here!

Deep in the New World, in some unnamed country, a fierce war had just ended, leaving destruction in its wake.

"Glug Glug..."

Inside the once-grand lobby of the Royal Palace, now a scene of devastation, Kaido sat heavily on the throne. He was swilling down wine, the dead king lying carelessly at his feet.

"Urorororo," Kaido bellowed, "Fire Fist Ace, eh? Sounds like he could be a useful addition!"

News had reached him from Onigashima about the fiery pirate. "Fire Fist" Ace had caused quite a stir on the island, eventually being stopped by Kaido's own son, Yamato.

But Kaido wasn't angry at all. In fact, he was in a good mood. He admired talent, and he was confident that once he brought Ace under his control, the Beasts Pirates would become an even greater force.

However, Ace would have to wait. Kaido still had more countries to conquer on this expedition.

"Urorororo, let's move out, you lot!" he roared.

"Ooooh!!!" his crew responded enthusiastically.

Unbeknownst to Kaido, Yamato had already slipped away from Onigashima. Even the guards stationed there hadn't noticed the "Princess Oni's" disappearance. Onigashima was so vast that it wasn't unusual to not see her for days, or even weeks. Besides, the princess didn't exactly enjoy being around them anyway.

---

Time passed, one day after another.

On a deserted island in the New World, the Spade Pirates' ship and the 11th Division warship were hidden in a narrow channel. A crackling bonfire lit up the night.

Ace sat by the fire, his mind a swirl of complicated thoughts. He had been learning to use Haki under Roya's guidance for the past few days.

He had to admit, he was improving rapidly.

Roya's teaching was amazing.

He was not only learning Armament Haki, but also Observation Haki. This was a great help in battle.

He still couldn't beat Roya, but the fights were no longer complete one-sided beatdowns. And even as Ace improved, Roya didn't stand still.

Also, Roya hadn't mentioned the Seven Warlords of the Sea at all lately, which made Ace feel a little guilty.

Ace glanced at Roya, who was sitting beside him. After hesitating, he leaned closer.

"Roya," Ace began.

"What is it?" Roya asked, looking at Ace.

This kid has been soaking up knowledge like a sponge. His Haki was developing at an incredible pace, just like Roya had back in training camp.

Ace fidgeted with his hands, scratching his head. "Roya, why are you so set on me becoming one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea?" he asked, feeling a little lost.

"Well now," Roya said, narrowing his eyes.

Heh, he finally couldn't hold back, huh?

Trying to escape the Old Man's grasp? You're still too green!

Roya smiled. "Ace, most pirates are evil," he said. "They plunder and harm innocent people, and you know that very well."

"Yeah," Ace admitted.

He was a seasoned pirate himself, and he had fought many vile crews. Although he hated to admit it, many pirates were indeed like that.

"I don't want you to become like that," Roya said, sighing. "Ace, I know you're a good person, but things don't always go the way you want."

"Generally, pirates who enter the New World face a major challenge."

"Challenging the Four Emperors!"

"Victory means taking their place, but failure means you have two choices: join the Four Emperors, or die."

"Of course, some lucky ones escape, but they pay a heavy price, like losing their crew!"

"Neither of those outcomes is acceptable to you, right?"

Ace was silent.

He couldn't bear the thought of joining one of the Emperors or losing his crew. That left only one path.

Defeat the Four Emperors!

Roya's voice deepened. "Ace, I know your ambition, but you can't even defeat me yet, let alone the Four Emperors!"

"I won't give up!" Ace declared, raising his head, his eyes reflecting the dancing flames of the bonfire.

"No one is asking you to give up. I hope you can defeat the Four Emperors," Roya said, shaking his head.

These rookies are all alike. They won't learn until they hit rock bottom. There's no reasoning with them.

"Ace, I said I don't want you to become an evil pirate. I don't mind you challenging the Four Emperors, but you need to think about the consequences."

"You can control yourself, but can you control your crew?"

"Take Whitebeard, the Emperor you want to challenge. He has dozens of pirate crews under his command, many of them evil. If you fail and have to join Whitebeard, how will you deal with those evil pirates?"

"That's what I'm worried about!"

Roya looked intently into Ace's eyes.

"I don't want you to fall. I don't want you to associate with those who drink human blood and eat human flesh. I don't want you to ignore sin or even join in it. And I definitely don't want to fight you in the future. I don't want Mister Garp to be disappointed. Understand?"

"Roya..." Ace was stunned.

He had never thought Roya cared so much about him.

Reason mixed with emotion.

Roya continued, "That's why I want you to become one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. It won't eliminate all my worries, but at least the Warlords are under Marine supervision, so they won't fall too far."

"Becoming a Warlord won't really affect you. It's mostly just a title, but it comes with great benefits."

"You'll have more freedom, whether you're traveling to new areas or just going about your day."

In Roya's mind, becoming a Warlord had only advantages. The World Government would use them, but unless it was forced conscription, Ace could refuse. And forced conscription only happened during wars with the Emperors, which might not even occur once a decade.

The benefits, however, were numerous. He wouldn't be hunted by the Marines, and he could get resources from the Government.

For example, he might gain access to weapons created by Vegapunk.

One of Crocodile's subordinates had a gun that had eaten a Devil Fruit.

Ace's eyes showed his inner conflict.

If Roya had forced him, he would have refused, no matter how many times he was beaten.

But knowing that Roya truly cared about him and was seriously guiding his training, he wavered.

It's just a title, after all.

He remembered talking about the Warlords with his crew. Besides the bad reputation among pirates, becoming a Warlord was something many pirates could only dream of.

Ace took a deep breath, his eyes now firm.

"Roya, I want to challenge Whitebeard!"

"Yeah, I know," Roya nodded.

This kid's biggest goal is to take Whitebeard's head. He knew why Ace yearned to defeat Whitebeard.

To surpass his father, Roger.

"Roya, I won't give up until I face Whitebeard!" Ace said, clenching his fist, a fierce fighting spirit burning in his eyes. "After I challenge Whitebeard, I'll give you an answer, okay?"

"Of course!" Roya laughed.

He already had his answer.

Heh, not a waste of breath after all!
