Chapter 55: Chapter 55 — Fifty-five

Serena’s brows creased once she snapped out of her thoughts. She could see a crazed look in Jessica’s eyes, and she deduced that she was dangerous. She dared not say anything which could trigger Jessica..

But she didn’t want to give Jessica the illusion that she had won. She knew that to deal with someone as dangerous as this, she could only deal with her psychologically.

Serena inhaled slowly, then laughed.

The sound startled Jessica.

"You’re wasting your time," Serena said evenly. "You didn’t bring me here to kill me, did you?"

Jessica’s grip tightened on the knife. ’How could she have accurately guessed it?’ She thought to herself, staring daggers at Serena who only smiled.

"Oh? How sure are you that I won’t kill you right here and dispose of your body, never to be found anymore."

"You brought me here because you’re angry. Because you’re jealous. Because no matter what you do— Serena lifted her chin, "—you will always feel second to me.

The knife slammed into the table beside Serena’s head. Serena flinched, but she still met her eyes.

Jessica’s eyes burned.

"Tie her tighter," she snapped, her eyes red with fury.

As they obeyed, Serena’s heart raced, but her mind stayed sharp. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Jessica," she called out softly. "Alexander would find me." She muttered with a rare yet fierce determination in her eyes.

Jessica suddenly smiled—the type that spelt danger. "Then I’ll be eager to see him save you."

She walked out with her men, leaving Serena to the silence of the room.

Once she was sure Jessica was out of the room, she let out a deep breath which she didn’t know she was holding.

"Alexander," she mumbled under her breath. "Find me soon, okay? I need to tell you something."

While earnestly praying that Alexander would find her soon, the person in question was instructing his men.

"I don’t care how you want to do it, I just want her to be found." He ordered, his eyes dark, and his voice cold.

Earlier, they were able to tap into the surveillance camera of the road which leads to the cemetery, and they discovered a shady looking van.

Alexander deduced that she was kidnapped. He didn’t hesitate to breach a restricted network using a proprietary AI traffic-monitoring system which only his company had access to.

He needed to find out where the van was headed to. It didn’t take time, and the van’s location was found in an instant.

This was what led to this current situation.

Mama and Maya looked speechless as they watched him.

Maya leaned into the older woman’s left ear and whispered, "he looks so dangerous. Although it hasn’t been long since he started working with us, this is the first time I’ve seen him so agitated."

Mama bit her lips. It was clear that Alexander harboured affections for Serena.

Alexander who had no idea what the two women were whispering about turned to them.

"Both of you, stay here." He instructed calmly..

"But, Mr.. Alexander..."

"No buts." Alexander cut Maya off. "My bodyguard would protect you. Just stay here. You don’t have to worry, I won’t return if Serena isn’t me."

He didn’t wait for their replies before he walked away, followed by the men with stern expressions.

Alexander’s expression was calm as he led the way but only he knew the turmoil he was facing. The thought of Serena being kidnapped left him at a loss.

But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t save her. Rather, he would stop at nothing to bring her back without any itch.

Serena didn’t know how long had passed. But she was parched, and hungry. Ever since Jessica left, she had not stepped foot into the room. It was as though she was confident that Serena would be unable to escape..

And perhaps Jessica had every right to be confident... because no matter how Serena struggled, she was unable to untie herself. She gave up after a while, noticing that her efforts were not futile.

The door creaked open quietly causing Serena’s head to snap up instantly.

Footsteps echoed—measured, unhurried, confident.

Jessica walked back in. She was alone this time, the knife in her hands disappeared, her heels clicking against the concrete floor. Her lips were curved, but there was nothing warm about the smile.

"I see you’re done struggling." She commented with a knowing smile. "Have you come to terms that you might not be able to escape? Have you finally accepted that your struggling is useless?"

Serena didn’t reply. She didn’t need to.

"You know," Jessica said lightly, circling Serena like a predator, "you’re much calmer than I expected."

Serena finally lifted her gaze slowly. "Panicking wouldn’t benefit me. It only makes me look weak."

Jessica scoffed. "Still pretending to be strong, isn’t that so? I thought you’d be begging me to let you go."

This was Jessica’s utmost desire. To see Serena beg. She couldn’t stand that Serena was in a better place than she was. She needed an opportunity and unsurprisingly, it arrived.

Serena laughed softly, breaking her out of her thoughts.

"I don’t pretend," Serena replied. "I endure, just like the way I endured you and your mother’s bullying while my dad stayed silent. That’s endurance, and not pretence."

Her eyes were calm, but her fists were tightly clenched behind her back. Memories were being brought back, tears threatened to escape her but she remained stubborn, not even letting a single one drop.

Jessica was about to say something when one of her men barged into the room, panicking..

"Ma’am, we are in trouble." He spoke frantically, flailing his hands in a state of terror.

Jessica frowned while staring at the anxious man.

"Would you speak properly? What’s going on?" She yelled. She didn’t know why, but a bad feeling suddenly engulfed her..

The man swallowed before recounting the incident. "We’ve been surrounded. The men guarding the door have been killed as well. They are coming." He whispered, his eyes betraying his fear.

Jessica’s entire body trembled as she took a step back in disbelief. She knew she would be found... but she didn’t expect it to be this soon.

Serena’s heart, on the other hand, raced. He was here. He was finally here.

"Alexander..." She whispered under her breath. "I knew you’d find me."
