Chapter 54: Chapter 54 — Fifty-four

Alexander’s eyes flickered over to the empty seat across, him and the space between his brows drew together.

"She’s never late." He murmured under his breath. Even though Serena just resumed work as his executive assistant, he knew about her ethics. She was never late.

His chest tightened, suddenly having a bad feeling. Suppressing the feeling, he dialed her but was met with a mechanical reply..

"The number you’ve died is not reachable at the moment. Please try again later."

The bad feeling within kept spreading as he dialed her number, but was met with the same cold response.

He suddenly rose to his feet, trembling. His eyes drifted to the paper of ownership he wanted to gift her today.

Taking a deep breath, he requested Maya to be brought to his office.

A few minutes later, Maya appeared in his office, hands behind his back as she gazed at him.

Then her attention shifted towards Serena’s seat, and a crease formed on her forehead.

"Serena hasn’t arrived?" She muttered under her breath, but Alexander caught it.

"Yes." He nodded with a grave expression. "The major reason why I called you. Do you have any idea where she might be? I’ve been trying her number but I keep getting mechanical replies."

Maya was about to shake her head before her expression tightened. "Yes!" She exclaimed excitedly. "Today is her mom’s death anniversary. She would surely be at the cemetery."

Alexander blinked, momentarily speechless. He didn’t expect that the situation would be like this.

"Mr. Blackwood, I suggest you don’t disturb her. She might have turned off her phone to allow maximum peace with her mom." Maya rambled on, but Alexander wasn’t listening to her.

He trusted his gut feeling, and he knew that Serena was in danger. He couldn’t shake off the feeling no matter how he tried.

"Do you know the cemetery?" He asked, catching Maya off guard.

"Sir?"

"I asked do you know where the cemetery is? Its location?" He asked, his eyes betraying the panic within.

"I don’t know." She whispered. "But Mama should know." She added when she saw that he was about to flip out.

"Let’s go to her apartment." He ordered, and walked out. Maya had no other option than to follow after him as well.

About thirty minutes later, they arrived at Serena’s apartment. Mama was surprised to find them at the door.

"Come in," she offered with a soft smile, but Alexander declined.

"Mama, you should know where Serena’s mother was laid to rest, right?" Maya inquired, and the former nodded. "Then take us there." She requested.

Mama’s eyes darted between Maya and Alexander as she questioned, "why?"

Alexander took a deep breath before explaining. "Serena is in trouble. I need to go to the cemetery."

Upon hearing that Serena could be in trouble, Mama instantly dashed out, surprising them.

"Aren’t you coming along?" She asked, and they rushed after her as well.

Cemetery

The air was eerie as they walked in. Mama led the way as she was the only one who knew where Serena’s mom was laid to rest.

When they arrived, it was empty. Alexander frowned as he surveyed the area.

"Is it possible that she must have left?" Maya asked, her face pinching in confusion.

Mama shook her head. "Serena spends time with her mom before leaving. There’s no way she would have left. Something is wrong." She murmured.

The bad feeling which Alexander has tried to suppress returned, and this time, it was more intense.

He scanned the environment for a while before his eyes landed on something which was hidden behind an outgrown bush. His brows knitted as he walked slowly.

Crouching down, Alexander pulled a phone from the bush.

"That’s Serena’s phone!" Maya exclaimed. She’d recognise it anyway, after all, she was the one who got the pouch for her..

Alexander studied it and he nodded. It really was Serena’s phone..

"Where could she be?" Mama asked, her heart in her mouth. "She’s not the type to be careless."

"Something is wrong." Alexander remarked, then fished out his phone from his pocket.

He dialed a number to which it was connected instantly. "I need you to help me investigate something."

------------------------

While Alexander was investigating Serena’s whereabouts, the person involved was splashed awake with cold water.

She shivered as her eyelids fluttered open, but she was only met with darkness. Her eyes were covered. When she tried to move, she realized that she was bound.

She struggled to free herself as flashes of what had taken place hit her. Only one thought filled her; she had been kidnapped.

Her heart raced as she struggled to free herself from the ropes. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"It’s useless if you struggle. You will only end up tangling yourself."

Suddenly, she heard a very familiar voice. Her ears picked up the sound and she stared straight at where the person stood.

"You are smart. You even know where I’m standing. You are really your father’s daughter."

"Jessica?" She called out, uncertainty filled in her voice.

What followed was a loud and deranged laughter. "She recognises me. Serena recognizes me just by my voice." It turns out, it was really Jessica.

Clapping, she continued. "How amazing."

"What do you want?" Serena asked coldly while secretly thinking of a way to free herself.

Jessica’s expression changed drastically. "You are not in the position to ask questions. But since you nicely asked, then I’ll tell you."

She signalled one of the men who stood behind her to get her a chair, and they did as instructed.

The chair was placed in front of Serena, and Jessica majestically took her seat. She removed Serena’s blindfold.

Serena, who wasn’t expecting the sudden light, squinted before her eyes focused on Jessica.

Jessica crossed her legs as she stared at her face. She was tempted to ruin the face. It was the same face that always haunted her. Even without obvious makeup, Serena was still beautiful.

"I asked a question." Serena stated, her eyes cold.

Jessica smiled. There was a knife in her hand, and she used it to trace Serena’s face.

Serena’s heart skipped a beat, but her eyes showed no fear.

"You are really beautiful. This face of yours is your weapon in seducing males." Jessica paused. "What would happen if something were to happen to this beautiful face of yours?"

Serena’s heartbeat quickened as she swallowed.

’I won’t break,’ she promised herself silently.

Not today. Not ever.

And in the darkness of her thoughts, she waited. She knew he was coming — Alexander was coming.
