On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 47: Losing All Face
The faces of the three Sterlings flushed red, then went white. It was the first time in their lives they had been so utterly humiliated.
And in front of so many distinguished guests!
Seeing the situation, the Rivers were also mortified. They didn’t dare cause a scene on Sinclair Family property, and they certainly couldn’t wait to be thrown out. They shot Warren Sterling a furious glare before leaving on their own accord.
Esther Sterling’s birthday party was thus interrupted. In her nearly twenty years of life and all the birthday parties she’d had, she had never experienced such embarrassment.
She finally couldn’t help but ask, "Dad, what’s going on? What are we going to do?"
Warren Sterling’s face was grim. "I’d like to know what’s going on too!"
Given the situation and Manager Grant’s firm attitude, Ruby Lynch was also at a loss and didn’t dare say anything more.
In the end, the group could only leave the hotel in disgrace. Esther Sterling’s birthday party was over, just like that.
Ruby Lynch had always been proud. It was the first time in her life she had ever been so publicly shamed, and in front of the Rivers, no less. Her tone was sharp. "Brother-in-law, what in the world happened? Who did you offend?"
Warren Sterling’s expression was just as sour, but he didn’t dare use a harsh tone. "I really don’t know. I thought everything had been going quite smoothly lately. I never expected something like this to happen!"
Rose Lynch said, "Could someone who can’t stand to see us succeed be playing tricks behind our backs? Could it be... Chloe?"
Ruby Lynch scoffed, her tone dripping with mockery. "She has that kind of power? Manager Grant is backed by the Sinclair Family."
"Exactly!" Warren Sterling agreed. "That little brat doesn’t have that kind of influence."
Esther Sterling walked alongside them without speaking, but in her heart, she too suspected Chloe. ’Still,’ she thought, ’it seems unlikely. How could that bitch possibly have the means to get close to the Sinclair Family?’
’Even if Damian Rivers likes her a little, he would never introduce her to the Sinclairs.’
Ruby Lynch’s brows furrowed, her voice clearly displeased. "You all had better find out what happened, and quickly. I’m heading back."
In the hallway, Phoebe Sinclair saw the Sterlings leaving through the floor-to-ceiling windows and immediately guessed what had happened. She walked over. "Brother, suddenly kicking out guests in the middle of a party... isn’t that a bad idea? It’ll affect our hotel’s reputation."
Tristan Sinclair glanced at her sideways. "Are you telling me how to do my job?"
"I... I just think it’s not a good look."
"You know perfectly well what you’re really thinking. Stop with the sanctimonious act!" After speaking, Tristan Sinclair strode forward.
Phoebe Sinclair was left standing there again. She knew Tristan wouldn’t meddle in such trivial matters on his own. ’He must have just been on the phone with Jasper Lockwood. This must be Jasper’s doing.’ She really couldn’t understand why Jasper would protect that country bumpkin.
’Old Master Lockwood’s condition is still uncertain, which means Chloe Sterling doesn’t have much real ability; she’s just putting on an act. I still need to find Lynn Chester as soon as possible.’
’If I can get to know Lynn Chester and invite her here, it would be a huge help to me in the future.’
Chloe Sterling arrived at the Lockwood Group.
Henry Chamberlain was waiting by the elevators. "Madam, you’ve arrived. The Second Master is waiting for you in his office. He asked me to come get you."
"Mm."
Chloe Sterling acknowledged him and followed him upstairs.
In the office, Jasper Lockwood was sitting at his desk signing documents. Seeing Chloe Sterling enter, he said, "Chloe, have a seat. Give me a moment."
"Okay." Chloe Sterling walked over to the sofa and sat down.
Jasper Lockwood finished signing the two documents in his hand and gave them to Henry Chamberlain, who took them and left the office.
Jasper Lockwood stood up, walked over to sit beside Chloe Sterling, and asked softly, "Would you like something to drink? Coffee or tea?"
Chloe Sterling shook her head. "I’m good." After a pause, she asked, "Has Silas Coldwell... made any moves?" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
"Not yet. Why?"
Chloe Sterling looked at him intently. "You need to be careful. A guy like Silas Coldwell won’t take two losses in a row sitting down."
Jasper Lockwood let out a light laugh, his tone relaxed. "I know. I know what kind of person he is."
Chloe Sterling raised an eyebrow. "You seem pretty relaxed about it."
"If I were afraid of him, I wouldn’t have snatched his project in the first place. Chloe, Silas Coldwell and I already had bad blood between us. Even without you in the picture, a confrontation between us was inevitable. So... don’t overthink it, and don’t get involved. This is between men. Let us handle it ourselves."
Chloe Sterling suddenly smiled, her beautiful eyes studying Jasper Lockwood. "I’m suddenly realizing I don’t really know you that well."
"Mm," Jasper Lockwood nodded, saying with a straight face, "My wife certainly doesn’t know me that well."
"..."
"But you’ll get to know me better in the future."
After a moment’s pause, Chloe Sterling cleared her throat and said, "Still, you should be careful. Silas Coldwell is the type who won’t give up until he gets what he wants. He’s relentless."
Jasper Lockwood raised an eyebrow, his tone laden with meaning. "You seem to know him very well."
Chloe Sterling blinked, a little puzzled. "I saved him, and he pestered me for so long after. Isn’t it normal that I know a thing or two about him? Do you not know Phoebe Sinclair?"
"I don’t! I never saved her, nor did I spend a period of time with her." Jasper Lockwood deliberately emphasized "a period of time."
Chloe Sterling: "How come I heard you two were childhood sweethearts?"
Jasper Lockwood: "Who said that?"
Chloe Sterling: "Does it matter?"
Jasper Lockwood: "Of course it matters. Slandering my reputation with rumors... I can sue them for everything they’re worth."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
’No wonder Maya Jacobs dragged her away at the hotel that day, not daring to listen to high-society gossip up close. It really is a bit dangerous.’
"Am I disturbing your work by being here?" Chloe Sterling changed the subject. "You can go back to what you were doing. I’ll wait for you here."
"You’re not disturbing me. There’s not much to do anyway." Jasper Lockwood glanced at the time. "Let’s go home."
"Now?" Chloe Sterling asked.
"Mm, now. Do you have other plans?"
"No, but are you sure you want to leave this early?"
A slight smile touched Jasper Lockwood’s thin lips. "I’m sure."
The two of them left the company and returned to the Lockwood Residence.
Just as they entered the living room, a message suddenly came in from Jean Kensington.
[Why did you go looking for Silas Coldwell? What are you trying to do?]
Chloe Sterling replied: [To have a talk with him, but it didn’t work out.]
[You actually went to see Silas Coldwell on your own for Jasper Lockwood’s sake. Looks like this President Lockwood really has some charm.]
Chloe Sterling: [It wasn’t entirely for him. I just don’t want Silas to keep pestering me.]
[Isn’t that the same thing? Last night, did you suddenly hang up the video call because Jasper Lockwood came into the room? Did you two... you know?]
The message was followed by a winking-smirk emoji.
Chloe Sterling ignored that topic and asked instead: [So when are you coming back, anyway?]
Jean Kensington: [In three days.]
Chloe Sterling: [I’ll pick you up from the airport to welcome you back.]
Jean Kensington: [Okay.]
They chatted for a little while longer before ending the conversation. Chloe Sterling’s mind once again replayed the scene from last night when Jasper Lockwood had suddenly returned to the master bedroom.
’I wonder what he meant by that.’
