Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Someone Used Poison

After I hung up the phone, my heart wouldn’t settle. I was so agitated I didn’t even hear Sebastian Forrest when he spoke to me.

"Hey, junior?"

It wasn’t until Sebastian Forrest reached out and nudged me that I came back to my senses, almost instinctively trying to push open the door and get out.

Sebastian Forrest grabbed my wrist. "We’re not there yet!"

Dazed, I snapped out of it and looked up reflexively, only to realize Sebastian was stopped at a red light.

"What’s wrong? Who was that on the phone? You look like you’ve seen a ghost."

I pursed my lips. ’With Sebastian Forrest’s resources, he’s far more capable than I am. His help would make things much easier.’

At that thought, I quickly repeated, word-for-word, what Dr. Cole had just told me.

"Poisoned?" Sebastian Forrest frowned. "You’re saying the doctor suspects someone poisoned Aunt Langley?"

I nodded quickly, then my brow furrowed. "But my mother-in-law is so kind to everyone. She’s hardly made any enemies. If it really is poison, who would do such a thing?"

Sebastian Forrest frowned in thought for a moment before speaking. "If I remember correctly, when Aunt Langley was first rushed to the hospital, the person who found her was Clara Langley, right?"

The moment he said that, I knew exactly what he meant.

That’s right!

It was Clara Langley!

’It must have been her!’

’Ever since my mother-in-law was hospitalized, Clara has had the most to gain. Besides Aunt Langley, there was no one to stop her from marrying Theodore Grant.’

’And don’t even get me started on Vincent Lombard. From the very beginning, he’s been hoping Clara would marry into the Grant family so Theodore could fulfill the wish Vincent himself never could when he was young.’

"I’ll investigate Clara Langley for you."

A warmth spread through my chest. I turned to look at Sebastian Forrest and thanked him sincerely. "Thank you."

Sebastian Forrest chuckled softly and ruffled my hair. "No need to be so polite with me."

Soon, the car stopped in front of my office building.

After watching Sebastian Forrest drive away, I didn’t rush into the office. Instead, I took out my phone and sent a message to my department manager, asking for a half-day off.

Once I got my manager’s approval, I hailed a taxi by the roadside and headed toward the Grant family’s estate.

...

It had been over half a month since I moved out of the Grant residence.

But as I stood outside the Grant family’s main gate again, a strange sense of detachment washed over me. It felt like the time I lived here had happened in a past life.

"Young Mad—" The security guard at the gate saw me and the word slipped out automatically, but he quickly realized that I was now divorced from Theodore Grant.

"You... Is there something you need here, miss?"

I composed myself before speaking. "Theodore Grant called me just now and told me to come back and pick up some things I left behind."

I wasn’t lying. Not long ago, Theodore had indeed told me that over the phone.

Though my response at the time had been to tell him to just throw everything away.

"Oh, oh, then please come in?" The guard, not suspecting anything, quickly opened the gate to let me in.

"Thank you."

I walked along the garden path toward the living room, noticing along the way that the courtyard, which my mother-in-law had once kept so beautifully, had been completely transformed.

A swing set, a flower wall, a gazebo.

It was all so gaudy and garish, it made one frown just looking at it.

’I don’t even have to think to know whose ostentatious taste is behind this.’

I wasn’t sure if it was because my mother-in-law was in the hospital, but I didn’t see a single soul on my way in.

Usually, the staff would be busy in the living and dining rooms, but now, the huge living room was also completely empty.

But this was exactly what I had hoped for.

’An opportunity like this is one in a million!’

With that in mind, I went upstairs unimpeded and headed straight for my mother-in-law’s bedroom.

However, when I tried the handle, I found the door was locked from the inside.

???

’What’s going on?’

’Who’s in there?’

But before I could think any further, Vincent Lombard’s voice suddenly roared from inside the bedroom, "Who’s out there?! Didn’t I say no one was allowed upstairs?"

As soon as he finished speaking, Vincent Lombard yanked the door open. When he saw it was me standing there, he seemed to freeze for a second. Then, his brow knitted and he quickly tried to shut the door. "What are you doing here?!"

But in the instant he was closing the door, I caught a glimpse of a pale, naked figure flashing past in the gap...

’A woman?!’

In that moment, a rush of anger surged through me.

My mother-in-law was lying in a hospital bed, her life hanging by a thread, and here was Vincent Lombard, carrying on an affair with a woman in her bedroom in broad daylight!

"Chelsea Joyce? What are you doing here?" Vincent Lombard’s brow was tight with anger. "Aren’t you divorced from Theodore? Why are you still showing your shameless face here?"

I forced down my anger. ’The most urgent task right now is to find out if my mother-in-law was really poisoned. This isn’t the time to have it out with Vincent Lombard.’

"Theodore called me. He told me to come get my things."

Vincent Lombard frowned. "Your bedroom is on the third floor. What are you doing on the second? You’re not thinking of stealing something, are you?"

I pursed my lips and took a deep breath. "I have things in my mother-in-law’s room, too..."

I pointed at the door. "I’ll just go in, grab a few things, and leave." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

But Vincent Lombard held the doorknob in a death grip, blocking my way. "What things of yours could possibly be in our room? Get lost!"

With that, he shoved my shoulder in a fit of rage.

I hadn’t expected him to suddenly get physical. I stumbled backward, only managing to stay upright by hitting the wall.

But the violent jolt sent a faint, sharp pain through my stomach, accompanied by a heavy, pulling sensation in my lower abdomen.

I couldn’t help but clutch my stomach. ’My baby...’

Just then, the butler must have heard the commotion upstairs. He came jogging up the stairs and, seeing me shoved against the wall by Vincent Lombard, immediately rushed forward, his face full of concern. "Young... Miss Joyce, are you alright?"

I took a deep breath. The pulling pain in my abdomen had eased, so I waved a hand at him. "I’m fine."

"Old Wang, you go upstairs with her while she packs her things. Keep a close eye on her and don’t let her steal anything."

The old butler pursed his lips. "...Yes."

Seeing that I couldn’t get into my mother-in-law’s bedroom, I had to give up for now. ’I’ll have to find another chance to come back,’ I thought.

When I got upstairs, I found that my belongings were all exactly where I had left them, untouched.

"Young... Miss Joyce..." When the old butler saw that no one else was around, he sidled up to me and lowered his voice. "Are you looking for something?"
