Chapter 57: Chapter 57: As Long As Sebastian Likes It

"Because I damn well feel like it!" Sebastian Forrest’s voice was icy. He gave Fiona Forrest a cool look, his ink-black eyes catching the light, completely devoid of warmth.

Fiona Forrest froze on the spot.

She had never seen Sebastian Forrest look at her with such an expression, nor had she ever heard him utter a single crude word—to say nothing of the contempt and frigidness laced in his "Because I damn well feel like it!"

At eighteen or nineteen, she was still just a young girl, and the harsh retort immediately made her eyes well up.

The third aunt stood awkwardly to the side, momentarily at a loss for words.

’No matter what, Sebastian Forrest is still her junior. For her, an elder, to have just apologized on behalf of her own daughter was already a massive concession...’

’But she also knew that the current pillar of the Forrest Family was still Sebastian Forrest’s father, and his mother’s career in politics was on a meteoric rise.’

’With Sebastian Forrest’s status and position, he was on a completely different level from a young girl like Fiona.’

’It was safe to say that Sebastian Forrest’s position within the Forrest Family was untouchable.’

’After Madam Forrest and the head of the family and his wife, he was next in line.’

"Grandma, look at Sebastian..." Fiona Forrest had grown up by Madam Forrest’s side. Finding herself at a disadvantage, she immediately sought backup. "He’s been completely bewitched by that vixen! He..."

Her words were cut short as she met a certain gaze.

Madam Forrest was watching Fiona Forrest with a slight frown. The years she’d spent in a position of power had given her an imposing air of dignity. Normally, she projected a kind and benevolent demeanor, but when she wiped the smile from her face, one couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and trepidation welling up from deep within.

’I was secretly taken aback. Though I had prepared myself to face anything before coming here—after all, there was no way the Forrest Family would accept someone with my status by Sebastian Forrest’s side—when the moment actually arrived, my heart still sank. For a second, I felt a suffocating sensation, as if someone had seized my heart in their fist.’

"Alright, that’s enough. Stop making a scene. What do you look like, crying like that?" The Matriarch’s sharp gaze swept over to the third aunt. "Take her to wash her face."

The third aunt quickly nodded and complied, half-dragging, half-pulling her daughter away.

"Grandma..." Fiona Forrest was clearly unwilling to let it go, but before she could say more, her mother dragged her away.

’I couldn’t help but be a little stunned. I hadn’t expected Madam Forrest to completely ignore Fiona Forrest’s accusation.’

’Or was it my turn to be ’dealt with’ next...?’

After the third aunt and her daughter left, the vast living room fell silent.

Zoe Lockwood, who had been standing to the side, now seemed completely at a loss.

Her expression was a mixture of bewilderment and alarm; clearly, events had unfolded in a way that far exceeded her expectations.

’To be honest, I was a bit dazed myself—’

’What... What was going on?’

’Madam Forrest clearly knew I was Theodore Grant’s ex-wife. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so completely unfazed when Fiona Forrest blurted it out just now!’

’But—why?!’

’The Forrest Family’s status was so illustrious, with influence spanning the military, political, and business worlds; it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say their power was immense.’

’How could they possibly allow Sebastian Forrest to marry a divorced woman like me?’

’Let alone his good friend’s ex-wife?’

’Was the Forrest Family planning to throw all concern for their reputation to the wind?’

’If word of this got out, how could Sebastian Forrest ever show his face in public?!’

This was precisely why Zoe Lockwood had been so certain that Madam Forrest would never approve of someone with my background. It was why she dared to egg Fiona Forrest on to come to the Forrest estate, thinking she could expose the truth, utterly humiliate me, and in turn force Sebastian Forrest to let me go...

But who would have thought—

"Madam Forrest, I just can’t bear to see Sebastian being deceived..." Zoe Lockwood pinned her last hopes on Madam Forrest, pointing at me and declaring, "Fiona was right. This woman isn’t worthy of Sebastian!"

"Enough. Whether she’s worthy or not is hardly for you to decide..." A severe look appeared in the corners of the Matriarch’s downturned eyes. Her gaze felt so tangible it seemed to physically press down on Zoe Lockwood, who didn’t dare to raise her head.

But in the next moment, the Matriarch’s kind and benevolent expression returned, though her voice carried a deliberate, unhurried chill. "As long as Sebastian is happy, that’s all that matters."

Zoe Lockwood’s face went white. Her whole purpose today had been to break Sebastian Forrest and me up. Seeing that there was no hope left, she wasn’t about to stick around and be a nuisance. With tears welling in her eyes, she shot a glance at Sebastian Forrest, then made a flimsy excuse and left.

After the Matriarch also went upstairs, only Sebastian Forrest and I were left in the living room.

"What... What just happened?" I still couldn’t quite process it, my eyes subconsciously scanning the room.

Seeing no one around, I lowered my voice and leaned close to Sebastian Forrest’s ear. "Why isn’t your grandmother bothered by my background?"

Never mind the heir to an immensely wealthy and powerful family like the Forrests—even an ordinary family wouldn’t want their son marrying a divorcée.

Sebastian Forrest mimicked me, leaning in close and lowering his voice. "Maybe it’s because my junior is just too outstanding?"

"..."

"I mean, look at you. You’re beautiful, you have a sharp and likable personality without being too flashy. Who wouldn’t like someone like that?"

"Senior Forrest!"

Sebastian Forrest broke into a smile and ruffled my hair. "Why are you worrying about all this? We’re heading back this afternoon anyway."

I couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief. I’d been on pins and needles for the past two days. Now that we could finally go home, my mood naturally lightened.

But just then, I felt a gaze fall upon me. I instinctively looked up and caught a glimpse of a shadow flitting past the corner of the second-floor landing, the hem of a dark red garment fluttering out of sight.

I couldn’t help but frown slightly—

’If I recalled correctly, the third aunt was wearing a dark red dress today...’

"What is it?" Sebastian Forrest asked, his gaze following mine.

I quickly shook my head. "It’s nothing. When are we leaving?"

"Let’s go now. I’ll just go upstairs and say goodbye to the Matriarch."

I nodded quickly. "Okay, I’ll wait for you."

I thought Sebastian Forrest would be talking with the Matriarch for a while, but to my surprise, he came back downstairs just a few minutes later.

"Let’s go." Sebastian Forrest took my hand and started to lead me outside.

I looked up at him, a little confused, and struggled to keep up with his pace.

Just then, I thought I heard a sound behind me and instinctively turned my head.

I saw Madam Forrest standing by the second-floor railing—I don’t know when she got there—her gaze fixed on us, her expression unreadable.

"Your grandmother is behind us," I quickly reminded him in a low voice.

But Sebastian Forrest paid her no mind, continuing to pull me straight out of the manor.

The car slowly pulled away, and the manor behind us gradually shrank until it finally disappeared from view.

I couldn’t help but let out a long sigh of relief. Just as I was about to take one last look at the beautiful scenery of Varden, the phone in my bag suddenly started to vibrate.

I glanced instinctively at the caller ID—

Theodore Grant.
