Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Finally Divorced

I flung his hand away and said coldly, "Theodore, I don’t love you anymore."

Back on the day my mother died, my love for him dried up along with my tears.

In this one-sided, reckless love, I sacrificed my youth and even indirectly caused the death of the mother who loved me most...

If I feel anything for him now, it’s only hatred!

And yet, after everything that’s happened, he still ridiculously hopes I can go back to being as carelessly and undyingly loyal to him as before?

’In Theodore’s eyes, just how pathetic must I be!’

Theodore shook his head, his face filled with disbelief. "No, I don’t believe you. You’re still mad at me, aren’t you?"

I took a deep breath, too tired to argue with him anymore. "Theodore, do you really think there’s any point in discussing this now? Clara Langley is carrying your child!"

’Although that child isn’t even yours...’

’And I, the one about to divorce you, am the one carrying your actual flesh and blood.’

’But he’ll probably never know.’

"Chelsea, I was drunk that night. I thought Clara Langley was you..."

"Theodore!" I couldn’t stand to hear any more and cut him off coldly. "Don’t say another word. Let’s just hurry up and file the divorce papers."

With that, I strode toward the Civil Affairs Bureau, afraid that if I had to listen to Theodore any longer, I’d be so disgusted I’d throw up.

Theodore seemed to hesitate for a few seconds before finally following after me.

Seeing that he hadn’t changed his mind, I relaxed a little.

But even so, until I had the divorce certificate in my hand, my heart was still in my throat.

It was a Tuesday, so the lobby of the Civil Affairs Bureau wasn’t too crowded.

"Are you two here to get your certificate? The marriage registration window is that way..."

Just then, a staff member came over to us, smiling as she pointed us in a direction.

"We’re here for a divorce," I said, my face impassive.

The staff member froze, then looked Theodore and me up and down with some embarrassment. "Oh, I’m so sorry. You’re both so young, I just assumed you were a young couple here to get married..."

She continued, her face full of regret, "You two look so good together. You probably haven’t been married long, have you? It’s not easy for two people to build a life together. Divorce is a serious matter, don’t do it on an impulse."

I shook my head. "It’s not an impulse. It’s been carefully considered."

The staff member looked regretful. "Alright, then. The divorce window is over there. You can go get a number."

I immediately walked in the direction the staff member pointed and took a number from the ticket machine.

Since there weren’t many people today, our number was called after only a short wait.

"Do you have all the necessary documents for the divorce? Both of your IDs, household registration books, marriage certificate, and the divorce agreement."

"Yes, we do." I nodded quickly, taking the documents out of the file folder and handing them to the staff member.

"The husband’s documents."

I immediately turned to look at Theodore.

A flicker of conflict crossed Theodore’s face. He seemed to hesitate, but in the end, he pulled a set of documents from his folder and placed them on the counter.

I quickly reached for the folder, but Theodore slammed his hand down on it.

I looked up at him in surprise, just in time to see a flash of pain and conflict in his eyes.

"Theodore?" I frowned, wondering what he was trying to pull now.

Theodore’s jaw tightened. He stared straight at me for a good ten seconds before finally letting go.

I relaxed slightly and quickly opened the folder, handing the documents inside to the staff member.

The staff member’s brow furrowed. She looked from the documents in her hand back to Theodore and me. "Are you both divorcing voluntarily?"

"Yes," I said quickly.

But there was no sound from Theodore.

’My brows knitted together as I looked at him. I had no idea who he thought he was putting on this sentimental show for at a critical moment like this.’

As if sensing my displeased stare, Theodore finally took a deep breath and nodded. "Yes, it’s voluntary."

The staff member pressed her lips together, her gaze flicking between the two of us one more time before she looked down and continued with the procedure.

’The documents themselves were surely fine.’

’Lawyer Kerr had drafted the divorce agreement for me, ensuring the best possible outcome regarding my rights and the division of assets.’

"Why is there a handwritten clause on the agreement?"

But just then, the staff member suddenly spread the divorce agreement out in front of us. "Was this changed by the husband or the wife?"

’I certainly hadn’t been the one to change it.’

But when I saw the clause clearly, I couldn’t help but frown and instinctively turn to look at Theodore.

Theodore finally spoke, his voice low. "You were the one who chose the location for that villa, and you oversaw the renovations. It should be yours. Consider it my compensation to you."

’I felt a surge of irritation.’

’The divorce agreement already laid everything out perfectly clearly. I would fight for what was rightfully mine, but I wouldn’t take anything that wasn’t.’

’But Theodore had gone and added a clause on his own!’

’Doesn’t that invalidate the whole agreement?’

Fearing this would complicate the divorce, I quickly looked at the staff member. "Can the handwritten clause be crossed out? It won’t affect the validity of the agreement, will it?"

The staff member glanced at me, then turned her gaze to Theodore. "Did you add this handwritten clause?"

Theodore nodded. "I did."

"Sign your name next to it and add your thumbprint."

"Okay." Theodore did as he was told.

Seeing the staff member take the divorce agreement back, the heart that had been lodged in my throat finally dropped back into place.

The seconds ticked by. The lobby was quiet, filled only with the sound of the staff member flipping through documents and stamping papers.

My gaze was fixed on the busy staff member, but even so, I could feel Theodore’s intense stare on me.

"Alright, you two sign this document, and then come back in thirty days to pick up your divorce certificate."

The staff member pushed a document in front of us.

I was the first to grab the pen, quickly scribbling my name before asking urgently, "We can’t get it today?"

"The state now requires a thirty-day cooling-off period for divorces. During this time, if either of you has regrets, you can come and withdraw the application at any time."

I panicked as soon as I heard that. "It can be withdrawn?"

"Yes, it’s a newly enacted law."

’What...’

’How could there be something like this?’

’Doesn’t that mean that if Theodore decides to change his mind and withdraw it within these thirty days, the whole divorce proceeding will be void?’

’A divorce cooling-off period?’

’Why on earth would they implement a policy like this right now?’

But as anxious as I was, I knew that with the law in place, being impatient was useless. I would just have to wait another month.

’I can only hope nothing goes wrong this month!’

Just then, Theodore finished signing his name on the document and handed it to the staff member. "Thank you."

"Let’s go," Theodore said, getting up first.

I followed glumly behind Theodore, heading out of the Civil Affairs Bureau.

At that moment, Chloe Miller was already waiting eagerly by the entrance. As soon as she saw me, she rushed over. "Chelsea, how did it go? Is it done?"

I nodded. "Mhm, the divorce paperwork is all filed."

"That’s great!" Chloe couldn’t help but clap.

As if infected by her enthusiasm, I couldn’t stop the corners of my lips from turning up in a slight smile.

But at that very moment, a low voice suddenly sounded from behind me. "Are you that happy to be divorcing me?"
