On Our Wedding Day My Husband Announced His First Love Online-Chapter 35: Really Sparing No Expense
My somewhat dazed face was reflected in Sebastian Forrest’s deep, clear eyes.
For a moment, my breath caught.
"Master Forrest, if you want some cherry cake, just say the word. Why are you staring at the one in Joyce’s hand?"
Just then, Jude Miller spoke up, his face full of playful mockery. Sebastian Forrest turned and shot him a look. "If you know, then go get it."
Jude Miller froze for a second, then burst out laughing. His teasing gaze swept over Sebastian until he couldn’t take it anymore and kicked out at him. Only then did Jude turn and walk away, still smiling.
Watching the interaction between Sebastian Forrest and Jude Miller, I couldn’t help but marvel at how their friendship was so obviously strong.
’Whenever I’d seen Sebastian Forrest with Theodore Grant before, he always seemed so cold and aloof. I thought that was just his nature, but it turns out he was only like that with Theodore...’
’It seems his relationship with Theodore Grant isn’t as good as the rumors say.’
’Thinking about it now, it makes sense. All that talk about being ’childhood friends’ and ’brothers’ always seemed to come from Theodore.’
Once Jude Miller was out of earshot, I finally asked the question that had been weighing on my mind. "Senior Forrest, why are you helping me? Did Theodore Grant do something to offend you?"
The hint of a smile on Sebastian Forrest’s face faded. He scoffed. "He offended me badly."
"?" I was completely bewildered.
From what I knew, Theodore Grant did everything he could to curry favor with Sebastian Forrest. After all, when it came to family background, Sebastian’s was far superior. Even their so-called title of "The Twin Jewels of Kington University" was mostly due to Theodore riding on Sebastian’s coattails.
Just then, Jude Miller returned holding two cherry cakes. Seeing that Sebastian Forrest looked a bit grim, he flashed a grin, revealing two rows of perfect white teeth, and asked curiously, "What are you two talking about?"
"None of your business!" Sebastian Forrest shot him a look, took both cherry cakes from him, and then handed one to me.
Jude Miller, now empty-handed, pouted and tutted. "Putting a girl before your bro, huh."
I watched them bicker like a couple of kids while I ate my cake, a smile crinkling the corners of my eyes.
But just then, the phone in Sebastian Forrest’s pocket started to vibrate.
When he glanced at the caller ID, the smile on his face vanished instantly. "Hello, Mom..."
I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end, but seeing Sebastian Forrest’s furrowed brow and impatient expression, I knew he was getting a lecture...
It was only then that I belatedly realized news of the party would definitely get out.
While it would certainly use public opinion to force Theodore Grant into a divorce, it had also dragged Sebastian Forrest into this mess—and the consequences for him might be even more severe than for Theodore.
My heart tightened with anxiety at the thought.
’Before, I was so focused on divorcing Theodore Grant as quickly as possible that I never considered Sebastian Forrest’s situation.’
"I know," Sebastian Forrest replied impatiently. He glanced sideways at me, then said with a frown, "I’m hanging up."
"Senior Forrest, did my problem get you into trouble?" I asked, looking at him uneasily.
Sebastian Forrest smiled. "No, it has nothing to do with you."
Even though he said that, I knew it wasn’t the truth.
I’d once heard Theodore Grant mention Sebastian Forrest’s parents. Theirs was a classic political marriage, a product of an alliance between military and government families. There was no love between them; they were forced together for the sake of their families’ interests.
So, from the day of their so-called enviable "wedding of the century," they had been strangers living under the same roof.
And since Sebastian Forrest had been raised by his grandparents in a military compound since he was little, he wasn’t close to his parents.
Perhaps because of that phone call, Sebastian Forrest didn’t stay much longer. He soon led me out of the banquet hall.
When I got home, I couldn’t stop thinking about what happened at the party. The first thing I did was call Chloe Miller and tell her everything.
"I told you! Master Forrest is interested in you!" Chloe Miller said excitedly. "He’s totally, subtly staking his claim!"
I was exasperated. "Okay, stop talking nonsense. I’m actually worried about this. Senior Forrest helped me out so much. Shouldn’t I buy him a gift or something to properly express my gratitude?"
"Definitely," Chloe Miller agreed.
"Then what would be a good gift?"
’Given Sebastian Forrest’s status, he doesn’t lack anything. And whatever he has is top-of-the-line luxury.’
Just at the party today, the watch on his wrist was worth at least eight figures.
Chloe Miller mulled it over for a long while. "How about a lighter? It’s a consumable item, so no matter how expensive, there’s a limit to the price."
"I don’t think Senior Forrest smokes..."
"What do you mean, he doesn’t?" Chloe Miller immediately retorted. "I saw him from a distance at City Hall the other day, and he was smoking right then!"
I felt a bit conflicted. I’d never seen Sebastian Forrest smoke whenever he was with me.
’Maybe he’s just not a heavy smoker.’
"Okay, I’ll take your advice. A lighter it is."
...
Since I had just started my job and was still in my probationary period, and because the production company and film crew were rushing us for the voice-overs, my colleagues and I had to work overtime for three days straight to get them done.
"We can finally rest!"
"Yeah, I’m dog-tired after the last three days!"
"We’re all just cogs in the machine. Stay calm!"
"We finally get a day off. Does anyone have plans? Going anywhere fun?"
"Fun? What fun? I just want to go home and sleep."
I listened to my colleagues’ idle chatter with a smile as I packed up my things.
The moment our department manager announced the day off, I had already made plans with Chloe Miller to go pick out a gift for Sebastian Forrest.
Just then, my colleague, Julian Hayes, walked over. "Joyce, are you free this afternoon? A friend gave me two tickets to a musical. It happens to be set in the same historical period as the next show we’re dubbing. Want to go see it together?"
For the next show, Julian Hayes and I were once again cast to voice the male and female leads, and it was a story set in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period.
For a project like this, going to a theater to get a better feel for the historical background was actually quite necessary.
However—
"I’m so sorry, but I already have plans to go shopping with a friend," I said apologetically.
Julian Hayes smiled. "No problem. We can always reschedule."
Just then, Chloe Miller’s call came in. I quickly answered. "Hey, Chloe, where are you? I’m off work now. I’ll be right down, wait for me."
After hanging up, I grabbed my bag and headed out.
"Chelsea!" Chloe Miller was standing at the company entrance, waving at me.
I hurried over. "Have you been waiting long?"
"Nope." Chloe Miller shook her head with a smile and immediately opened the car door for me. "Come on, get in."
But just as I was turning to get into the car, Julian Hayes suddenly ran over and pushed the two tickets into my hands. "Joyce, why don’t you and your friend go together? It’d be a waste for me to go alone."
I was surprised he had followed me all the way here. "Oh no, you don’t have to, Hayes," I said quickly.
"Don’t be polite with me."
With that, he stuffed the tickets into my hand, then turned and waved. "Have fun."
I instinctively wanted to chase after him, but he was already far away.
"Not bad! You’ve only been at the company for a few days and someone’s already got their eye on you. My Chelsea is as charming as ever!" Chloe Miller winked at me, her face beaming.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Don’t be ridiculous. We’re just regular colleagues."
"Regular colleagues give you theater tickets?" Chloe Miller plucked the two tickets from my hand. "These are over a thousand yuan each. He really spared no expense..."
