Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Theodore Grant Likes You

Sebastian Forrest’s patience had run out. "That’s enough. We’re leaving."

With that, he turned and walked away.

I subconsciously started to follow, but Theodore Grant grabbed my wrist. "Where are you going?"

I immediately shook off Theodore Grant’s hand. "You’d better sign the divorce papers quickly. Don’t let it get in the way of your little affair with Clara Langley."

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Theodore Grant frowned. "There’s nothing sordid between us!"

"Say whatever you want." I couldn’t be bothered to argue with him anymore. Seeing Sebastian Forrest waiting for me up ahead, I hurried after him without a second glance back. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Chelsea Joyce..." Theodore Grant subconsciously started to chase after me.

"Oh, Theodore, I’m starving! Let’s just go eat!" Clara Langley, however, grabbed his arm.

I didn’t look back at them, following Sebastian Forrest all the way out of the restaurant.

Just as we were getting into the car, Sebastian Forrest suddenly spoke up. "I’ll arrange a lawyer for you tomorrow. He’ll handle everything related to the divorce."

A weight lifted from my heart. "Thank you, Senior Forrest."

"Let’s go. I’ll take you home."

...

The next morning, I was eating breakfast when my phone suddenly rang.

"Hello...?"

"Good morning, Miss Joyce. I’m the lawyer Master Forrest arranged for you. My surname is Kerr."

"Hello, Lawyer Kerr."

’Sebastian Forrest really is efficient,’ I marveled to myself.

After a brief chat, Lawyer Kerr got a general understanding of the situation, confirmed my final divorce terms with me, and said I could just leave the rest to him. He would take care of it.

After hanging up, I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.

I had, of course, heard of this Lawyer Kerr. He was highly renowned.

People had given him the nickname ’The Kington Ace.’

It was said that there wasn’t a case he couldn’t win.

A small matter like a divorce would surely be child’s play for him.

With that great weight lifted from my heart, my mood improved as well.

Now that the biggest obstacle to divorcing Theodore Grant was resolved, the divorce was just a matter of time.

Without the title of ’Mrs. Grant,’ I could finally focus on doing what I loved.

In college, I studied broadcasting and hosting, but my true passion was always voice acting.

However, Theodore Grant thought being a voice actor wasn’t respectable, that it was beneath me, and he never let me pursue it. So, after marrying him, I gave up on that career.

Now, it was time to pick it back up.

I got right to it. In a single morning, I recorded a voice-over demo video for myself and sent it out to various companies hiring voice actors.

But having not touched voice acting for two whole years, I was worried my vocal skills had declined and wouldn’t meet current industry standards.

Just as I was waiting anxiously for a response, a call suddenly came in from Theodore Grant.

I frowned at the caller ID. I didn’t want to take his call, but considering Lawyer Kerr was already handling the divorce, I assumed he wanted to discuss it. So, I answered. "Hello..."

"Chelsea Joyce, come home right now. My mom’s sick..."

I hadn’t expected him to not mention the divorce at all.

But hearing what he said, I couldn’t help but frown. "What’s wrong with your mom?"

I suspected Theodore was using his mother to trick me into coming home. When I saw her just a few days ago, she was perfectly fine.

"The doctor said she’s been worrying too much, which put a strain on her heart. It’s probably because she’s been thinking about you..."

A pang of sorrow hit my heart. My mother-in-law was truly good to me; she really did treat me with the love she would her own daughter.

But even though I was worried about her health, I was also afraid Theodore was using her illness to lure me home.

I really didn’t want to see him again.

Just as I was hesitating, I heard my mother-in-law’s slightly weak voice through the phone. "Theodore, didn’t I tell you not to call Chelsea? You silly boy, I’m just tired from the past few days. I’ll be fine after some rest."

Hearing my mother-in-law’s voice, I knew she was really sick.

Theodore hadn’t lied to me.

Although I didn’t want anything more to do with Theodore, I couldn’t bring myself to be heartless toward his mother.

「Half an hour later.」

I arrived at the Grant residence in a taxi.

When I saw my mother-in-law lying in bed, her face pale, I was startled by how haggard and weak she looked.

"Mom... what happened? Why are you suddenly so sick?"

Seeing me, my mother-in-law managed a faint smile on her weak face. "Chelsea, you’re here."

I sat by the bed as she forced herself to sit up and took my hand.

We had only been apart for a few days, but she seemed like a different person, an aura of decline hanging about her.

"I’m fine. It’s just an old problem." She pointed to her chest. "I’ve been having heart palpitations these past few days and haven’t been sleeping well. The doctor came to see me and said it’s from worrying too much, nothing serious."

I looked at her, my face full of heartache. "Have you taken your medicine?"

I knew my mother-in-law had a heart condition, but she usually managed it very well and rarely had flare-ups.

I never expected her to suddenly get this sick.

"I’ve taken it all. Don’t worry, I’m fine. I’ll be better soon."

I still couldn’t help but worry.

I had only been with the Grant Family for two years, but I knew it wasn’t easy for her as a widow raising her son alone. Although Vincent Lombard helped out, he was ultimately an outsider.

And Theodore was not a caring person; he never appreciated his mother’s hardships.

There was no one in the house to offer her comfort and care, and now that she was sick, she was weak and needed someone to look after her.

Seeing me frowning in silence, my mother-in-law patted the back of my hand. "Chelsea, are you really going to divorce Theodore? Is there no room for reconciliation?"

I pressed my lips together. Though I was worried about her health, I still followed my heart and nodded.

She let out a soft sigh. "Chelsea, it’s not that I’m trying to stop you from divorcing Theodore. It’s just... I don’t want the two of you to have any regrets."

"There’s nothing to regret. He never loved me, and I don’t love him anymore."

But she shook her head. "No, Theodore does love you."

"How is that possible?" There was no way I’d believe that.

My mother-in-law reached up to tuck a stray strand of my hair behind my ear, her tone as gentle as ever. "That foolish boy probably doesn’t even know he loves you himself."

I almost laughed, feeling that she was just trying to comfort me.

Even though I didn’t need that kind of comfort now.

If the old me had heard someone say Theodore loved me, I would have been happy for days, even if it was a lie.

But now—

who he loved had nothing to do with me anymore.

For a moment, neither of us spoke, and a rare silence fell over the room.

But it wasn’t long before the bedroom door was suddenly pushed open.

"What are you doing here?" A harsh question shattered the silence like a clap of thunder.

Vincent Lombard stormed in, glaring. "Weren’t you getting a divorce? So you were just shamelessly playing hard to get!"

"Vincent Lombard, you..." My mother-in-law, furious, was about to scold him but was interrupted by a coughing fit, doubling over as she hacked violently.

I quickly handed her a glass of water while gently rubbing her back to help her catch her breath. "Don’t get upset. Here, drink some water."

"Stop your hypocritical act!" Vincent Lombard sneered. "The doctor said she’s been worrying too much, and it’s all your fault! You’re a jinx!"
