Chapter 768: A Trap (Ch.769)

Fort Inferno was perfectly silent. Too silent for a fortress that had just faced a battle the day before and was currently anticipating another.

It was already sunset now and after a calm day, the report had just arrived. The evacuation of the lower district had begun.

Before the night was over, it would either go by peacefully or there would be a confrontation. And if there was, Neveah knew which side she would be on, it was not even a question.

Even so, a sinking feeling churned within her. It was hard to ignore the peculiarity of this situation, if anything went wrong and the dragons retaliated, it would be another annihilation.

But why exactly did the werewolves even come here? For what reason? Who led them? Why had they made no moves other than taking lower district hostage since they arrived? Not even Alessio or Lothaire would be so daring, and if they were, there should have been a demand made by now, and reports of a good number of deaths in the lower district.

Werewolves arriving out of nowhere was the last thing Neveah had expected. The Fae involvement in it was clear from the portals, but it still didn’t explain why the werewolves themselves would make such an unwise move.

’I would carve a path of blood that leads right to you my beloved... this is how far I plan to go.’

’May I tell you what is coming?...’ 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

’It is I... I am coming...’

The words echoed through Neveah’s mind, a reminder of what she had allowed herself to forget. That there would always be the looming darkness of her past hanging over her ...

That somewhere deep within her soul, there were still traces... strands of a bond she had failed to sever, a rejection she had not properly completed, a bond that tied her to a past she would much sooner die than return to. And the thought of facing it was more terrifying than a thousand Fae battalions.

A soft thud drew her attention , and she glanced down to find the parchment she had stuck in her belt earlier, had just dropped to the ground. It was the letter, and she had almost forgotten about it.

Picking it up, she rolled it open and the very first word sent Neveah’s world reeling to a sharp halt.

It was not the word itself, but rather, the language from which it originated and how eerily familiar it was to Neveah.

Staring back at her was a parchment written word for word in ancient wolven tongue. A language that did not exist in the entire stronghold.

To Neveah’s knowledge, there were only two people in the entire stronghold who could possibly interpret this letter. Her father, Lord Kaideon was one and she was the other.

Her gaze quickly scanned the letter and at the very bottom of it was a familiar seal, one she had carried on her own person every day, across two lifetimes, since that night in the Eclipse Domain when she received it.

"The creator’s mark..." Her voice was barely audible. "But how...?"

"Veah?" Xenon called as he stepped out of the washroom. "Are you alright?"

For a moment, she was too stunned to even respond. Not even when Xenon came up behind her and took the parchment from her hands, glancing through it.

"What does it say?" He asked Neveah, his brows furrowed in concern and suspicion as he scanned the strange words.

"It says to go to lower district...alone." Neveah murmurs quietly.

"No." Xenon made his stance clear, scrunching up the letter in a furious fist.

Neveah shook her head slightly to put her thoughts in order. "Dragons do not speak in wolven tongue, if they sent this here in the wolven tongue...then they know, that I am here."

How had they known so clearly that she was currently at Fort Inferno? Were they still in contact with the Fae? But that was not even the reason Neveah was stunned. But rather, it was that seal...one her father had told her represented her mother’s birthplace, the Winter Domain.

But it made absolutely no sense for the Winter wolves to be here or allied with the Fae. Unless someone was just using the seal for some nefarious purpose. Was it a trap?

Who else would know of her connection to the winter domain, if not the person who falsely claimed her to be his daughter, Lothaire?

Not even Alessio knew of her connection to the winter domain, at least not as far as Neveah knew. But it had already been over two years, what had changed on that side of the world? What events led to this current moment?

And what could Lothaire still want from her?

"It is not safe for you to go to them at all. But alone? You know that is out of the question." Xenon said firmly, moving away from her, he got dressed.

"If you must go, I’ll go with you. And that is not up for contention." He decided.

Neveah hesitated for a moment, the evacuation of the lower district was already in motion. If she let things play out first, she could ensure the citizens were safe and far away from danger, whatever happened afterwards would go by easier. But how could anyone be certain that nothing would go wrong before the evacuation was completed, leading to a confrontation?

There was absolutely no way she could turn a blind eye to the invite. Even if it was most likely a trap... even if it was qmeant to just lure her out, the slightest possibility that she could be making a mistake if she let the dragons annihilate the werewolves,

The slightest possibility that it could be the wrong move, it was not a chance Neveah was willing to take.

"Let Lord Kiroff know that we are headed his way. The evacuation will continue as planned... for us, we will go into the formation itself." Neveah said to Xenon.

"Dream walk it is." He replied.
