Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 741: No Remorse ()
Neveah paced across the room. Her brows were furrowed as she pondered in silence. Her mind still reeled from what she had heard, and the lengths Lodenworth and Keila had already gone to, dishonoring the dragon court without even giving it a second thought.
"What are you thinking?" Xenon asked, watching Neveah pace with a resigned expression. "Tell me what’s on your mind."
"Only that this is nuts." Neveah replied in a barely audible grumble. Xenon breathed a sigh, unsure of what he could say that would make the situation any better.
"This is not the most ideal situation." Xenon found himself agreeing instead. "But we cannot account for the choices others make." He added pointedly.
"I just..." Neveah paused briefly, glancing over at Xenon before she ran a hand through her hair. "My question is...why? What is the big idea behind all this? Giving the Fae supremacy?"
"Is that a good enough reason to risk everything she has worked so hard for... for decades? One moment, she is with us and the next..." Neveah trailed off. "I can accept that she might have always been this person. I can even understand that she wants a shot at being Fae Queen...but I mean, the Faes haven’t had a Queen in centuries, it was their own decision. What’s it got to do with us?"
"What is she trying to prove?" Neveah continued. "There is something Xenon... something behind all of this that we do not yet know. Something weighty enough... some past story or something. Do you know anything I don’t? About the Fae and the dragons?" Neveah asked.
Xenon was one of the few dragons who had seen the centuries from as far back as the uprising, and had played a major role in every battle and subjugation since, if anyone would know what was wrong, then it was him.
Xenon frowned slightly, shaking his head. "The Fae High Queen and His Grace, Agardan shared a tight-knit friendship. The High Queen abolished the title herself before her death...we guessed she believed the rulership of a council was more reliable than that of one lineage." Xenon murmured. "It may also have had something to do with the disappearance of the arcane magic. Perhaps the High Queen found her offspring unworthy for failing to inherit the most sacred ability of the royal lineage."
"Have you ever had doubts? Any at all?" Neveah asked, still uncertain that the history they knew of was enough motivation for Keila’s actions.
"I’m not sure...at the time, Agardan had taken ill and soon after, we lost him." Xenon recalled. "It was an opportune moment for the Fae to seize power, Agardan’s death shook the very foundation of many alliances that were hinged on his honour. The Fae alliance was one of such. We even prepared for confrontation... the first and last smart thing Asrig did." He said.
Neveah pursed her lips at the mention of Asrig, but she shook off the cold chill it stirred.
"However, the Fae instead retreated deeper into Aloria. They disarmed most of their battle outposts and just...well..." Xenon trailed off, glancing over at Neveah. "I am a man who knows war, Veah. If I was Fae, with the debt of life already paid, I would have taken that opportunity... what they did, it never really did make sense."
"You mean to say... the death of the Fae Queen and that of High King Agardan happened around the same period of time?" Neveah asked with a raised brow.
"Not exactly...His Grace, Agardan died first. The High Queen...not long after, but there were a few decades in between." Xenon relayed to Neveah.
Neveah nodded slowly, her brows furrowed in deep thought.
"Do you think there is a connection we don’t know about?" Xenon asked Neveah. "Between the High Queen and His Grace Agardan?"
Neveah’s gaze moved to Xenon’s and she hesitated, then shook her head slightly. "I... don’t know. I’m not sure what I think about it yet. The only thing I do know is that there is something the Fae is hiding that we do not know about."
"It is the only explanation for why the lost arcane magic would make an appearance so suddenly and now its wielder is hell bent on taking down the dragon rule." Neveah murmured. "But what is most pressing is what we shall do about the current situation. Everyone is looking to me to make a decision... the right decision and I really don’t know what to do."
Xenon smiled slightly, nodding his head in understanding. "I know how that feels. But you’re not alone, you know?" Xenon reminded. "You have me... and you have Jian. Now I wouldn’t know a thing about making world changing decisions, but we still have him...go to him...he will guide you."
"You’re really advising me to go to sleep right now?" Neveah asked with an amused smirk. "In the midst of all this madness?"
"Never a better time." Xenon replied, shrugging casually though his lips twitched in amusement.
"Now why do I feel you’re just trying to get me to stop pacing around and get some rest?" Neveah called out.
"Two truths can exist." Xenon replied simply. "Come here, love. Sleep... I’ll watch over you. The world can wait a few more hours." He said in a serious tone.
Neveah smiled slightly, knowing if Xenon had anything to do with it, the world could even wait days, so long as it meant she was well rested and not compromised.
Xenon was loyal and dedicated to the stronghold, and he was willing to risk everything, down to his own life for it, but Neveah had realized one thing...he was not willing to risk her for the stronghold, not even a little piece of her.
Neveah walked over to the bed and shedding of her coat, she lay down on the bed, resting her head on Xenon’s thigh.
"This is not an ideal situation...but what of it?" Xenon murmured, stroking Neveah’s hair. "You’re here in my arms. I can watch you sleep... keep you safe, I am a happy man... and I feel no remorse about it."
