Chapter 668: Lure (Ch.669)

’This place feels ominous.’ Neveah’s wolf pointed out as they took a turn down another cell hallway.

’It is Menarx’s district, all kinds of criminals have graced these halls, and not many left as the living...it should.’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.

Neveah had not gone so far down the hallway when she sensed something approaching from behind, Neveah whirled around just in time to catch sight of a lone wisp of shadow swirling in the air.

As Demevirld’s influence over Neveah grew stronger, Neveah’s awareness and comprehension of dark magic grew even more distinct. More than sensing it around, she could now see it vividly, just like she had seen the traces of a spell in the water source of Fort Scabbard.

The wisp of shadow twirled and spun, as though performing an intricate dance and Neveah just watched it in silence.

It moved right past Neveah, emitting an ominous whispering hiss as it disappeared from sight.

And then in the next moment, another wisp of shadow emerged from one of the locked cells, slithering across the ground in an eerie manner.

Neveah’s brows furrowed slightly in displeasure, she had seen the likeness of this before, back in the Fodder Grooves.

There were shadows and darkness to be found everywhere, and one of the most lethal arts of dark magic was the manipulation of those shadows into weapons,

In the same manner the dark lord and his council had created the shadow beasts and shadow people, an army of darkness that still prowled the dark lands and could not be completely banished even till this day.

"Sorcery..." Neveah murmured in a tone of distaste.

’Go find Imagor? Or track the sorcerer?’ Neveah’s wolf asked her.

’Imagor will also be after the sorcerer.’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.

Neveah followed the trail of the gathering shadows, letting it lead her deeper into the maze that was Menarx’s district.

Soon, she arrived at the gathering point where Neveah found a familiar face in distress,

"Lord River!" Neveah exclaimed in horror.

The Fae dangled from the air, with a thick mass of shadows wrapped around his neck, cutting off his airway completely and the thick mass of shadows visibly pulsed and wringed tighter with each movement Lord River made.

More and more shadows amassed around him, curling around his limbs as though to tear him apart.

Lord River’s legs kicked helplessly in the air as he struggled to breathe, his eyes were wide and bulging and the veins on his forehead were visible and pronounced as he was suffocated.

Lord River’s complexion was already turning purple, he was quickly running out of air and would not be able to struggle for much longer.

He opened his mouth to speak as he caught sight of Neveah but he could not get even a word out.

Lord River had done wrong, Neveah knew this. But he did not deserve to die in this manner.

Neveah quickly glanced around her surroundings with a deadly glare.

The shadows had been summoned to this location, which meant the sorcerer behind it could not be far away. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Neveah knew she would not be able to do much for Lord River except she could interrupt the spell and distract the sorcerer.

Neveah moved slowly, her gaze narrowed in concentration as she strained her senses to pick up on the slightest fluctuations, anything that would give away the location of the sorcerer.

Her senses were on high alert as she scanned her immediate perimeter and then her gaze zeroed on a particular empty cell encased in darkness.

Neveah quickly diverted her gaze from it, she scanned for just a heartbeat longer before she dashed towards the cell, her claws were extended and her hand shot out in between the cell bars, wrapping around the throat of the sorcerer within.

Neveah pulled harshly so the sorcerer was slammed against the metal bars and his face was finally in view.

"Let...him...go..." Neveah made clear, enunciating each word.

The sorcerer was unfazed by Neveah’s words, he even smiled slightly, tapping Neveah’s hand around his neck.

Neveah heard the sound of Lord River’s body dropping to the ground with a thud. There were no sounds of life following and Neveah winced visibly but she did not turn back.

Instead, Neveah returned the smile the sorcerer gave before she shoved forcefully.

The sorcerer went flying deeper into the cell, crashing against the wall while Neveah pulled the cell door open and stepped in, her gaze fixed on the sorcerer.

"It was you who hurt Menarx?" Neveah asked, watching the sorcerer get back up to his feet.

Neveah’s eyes had already adjusted quickly to the pitch darkness within the cell, but her gaze was focused on the sorcerer, so much so that she barely noticed the runes drawn on the walls and floor of the cell.

"You did not harm him when you had the chance? Why?" Neveah asked slowly.

"Even paralyzed, Lord Menarx is not so easy to harm." The sorcerer replied to Neveah simply.

Neveah’s gaze moved down to his leg, taking note of the limp and the abundant smell of blood.

Menarx had dealt the sorcerer severe injuries, Neveah realized. And rather than harming Menarx, it was more prudent to take the brief opportunity to escape...yet the sorcerer was still here.

"You did not attempt to leave the district but went in further. If you intend to escape, this is not the right way." Neveah pointed out.

"Only when I have fulfilled my orders, can I leave." The sorcerer replied to Neveah.

"Your orders...if they were just to kill Lord River, you would have done that swiftly and not dragged it out...you did that because..." Neveah’s brows furrowed slightly, her words trailing off.

"You had someone else you hoped to lure...me." Neveah guessed.

It was then Neveah glanced around the cell, to find the runes painted with blood which accounted for the overwhelming smell of blood she had picked up on.

"What is this supposed to be? A spell to claim my life?" Neveah asked with a frown.
