Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 649: Risk a Falling Out ()
Imagor’s expression changed the moment those words were said and even Kirgan stiffened visibly.
The atmosphere in the study immediately grew tense, the mention of the name ’Asrig’ was never well received by Dragon Kind, even Menarx and Everon who were already in the know had bitter expressions on their faces.
Neveah knew, when it came to accessing such forbidden records. It was beyond just the authority of the King’s guard.
Accessing records in the hidden archives was a direct defiance of founding laws of Jian’s own dynasty, laws that clearly sentenced such records to an eternity stored away, never to see the light of day again.
"Neveah, this request..." Imagor began to say after a short moment of silence but Neveah carried on.
"I have already been lectured on all the reasons why this is not a good idea and why my request is a difficult one and all the reasons not to even consider it."
"I am well aware it will result in great controversy and might even stir internal strife, I know my words will put you in a difficult position... still, I must ask you to honour them. These words are not mine, I have no personal business with Asrig and you all know this." Neveah said in a serious tone. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
Her gaze moved between Kirgan and Imagor, they were the two that needed to be convinced. Menarx and Everon may not have been onboard with the idea, but Neveah knew they would do as she asked.
These two trusted Neveah absolutely. But Kirgan and Imagor were different, Neveah had no special ties with these two Dragon Lords.
"His Grace has asked me to convey his words to the King’s Guard. Retrieve the records of Asrig... discreetly. What must be even more concerning to you all is the next part, these records must be entrusted to me intact...it might not make sense, but it is what it is." Neveah made it clear.
Imagor pursed his lips, a conflicted look in his eyes.
"My brothers and I know you speak only the truth, Lady Neveah...you are of dragon blood, you would not sully our Liege’s honor, I do not doubt that. But Asrig? Why him?" Imagor asked, his tone communicating his unease.
Neveah was taken aback by Imagor’s admission of trust in her which was the last thing she had expected given the tense relationship they had always shared.
"I wish I knew more than what I do now, and could explain to you for what purpose I was asked to make this request, but I know only as much as I have shared already, Imagor... what I know best is the fact that if we hope to be of assistance to him, we all must trust Jian." Neveah said directly.
"I have been told that other than Jian himself, only the council can sanction the retrieval of forbidden records." Neveah said again.
"The council will never hear of it. They will demand proof of Jian’s order and if they hear that the message was communicated through a magical means, the validity of it will be in question...it will be your word, against the laws of the stronghold." Imagor expressed.
"They will demand a direct royal order from Jian in person, you could be accused of fabrication and treason..." Kirgan worried.
Neveah grunted beneath her breath, running a hand through her hair. The laws guiding the stronghold were absolute, Neveah already knew this.
It was a difficult situation she found herself in, an outsider speaking on behalf of the Dragon King.
But what she had to do was follow Jian’s instructions, she could not afford to care about anything else.
"I am well aware, and this may sound unpleasant to you all, but we cannot attempt to go through the council and gain consent. They will oppose strongly and the debate may drag on for longer than we can afford."
"I do not know for how long I can maintain contact with Jian, it is already difficult to reach his dreams these days. Xenon also is...I must deliver the record to Jian while I still can, if I cannot even do this much... I might lose my mind..." Neveah’s voice cracked, the concern she had been trying to conceal seeped into her tone.
Imagor exhaled heavily, his gaze softened visibly at the brief display of emotions which was rarely seen with Neveah.
"Neveah, not to mention breaking laws, there is no one here who would hesitate to lay down our lives for Jian and Xenon, this is not even up for question." Imagor said meaningfully.
"But we must not forget that the rider council is formed by the most noble and excellent of our kind...it will not be easy to make such a critical move away from their knowledge, even with our full support."
"The very skies of Dragon Keep have eyes and the authority of the rider council is not to be underestimated, we made it so." Imagor reminded.
"If the rider council catches wind of this, they will not take it lightly...we will be fine, but you..." Kirgan trailed off.
"I will not make things anymore difficult for you, I will retrieve the records and leave Dragon Keep immediately, before the council can discover it."
"We may not be able to keep them in the dark for long and I cannot ask that of you all either. As pillars of the stronghold, I cannot let any of you risk falling out with the council...not now." Neveah said with a shake of her head.
"Veah..." Menarx began to argue but Neveah interrupted him.
"I am one who does not care to be allied with the council, the council has never approved of me anyways. I can risk another falling out."
Imagor shook his head in disagreement but Neveah did not let him interrupt.
"All I need is some time, to retrieve the records and return to the White Dunes... the reach of the rider council is limited in my father’s lands and the Dune dragons will protect me, I can avoid the council’s judgement for long enough to prove that this is the right decision." Neveah decided firmly.
"I will fetch the records tonight without fail and leave Dragon Keep immediately, for other arrangements, I will entrust it to you all." Neveah said.
