Chapter 639: Where It Began (Ch.640)

’It is the Black Fiend...’ A strange voice hissed in a low whisper, accompanied by an undertone of wonder.

’It is the Black Fiend, is it not?’ Another whispered, with a tone just as low, so much so that it was barely audible.

’The Black Fiend? The only Black Scaled dragon left alive?’ A third whisper echoed, sounding distant.

’Indeed. It is surely him!’ The first voice affirmed.

Xenon’s brows twitched slightly, not for the first time these days, those strange voices bickered away.

In the first few days after he regained consciousness, Xenon had encountered it for the first time, that feeling like he was being watched from a great distance.

Of course Xenon had immediately been on alert but he had not acknowledged the presence, there had not been a need to.

Firstly because, it was no surprise to face such a strange encounter in a place like the shadow tower, as much as the dragons had hoped to put an end to the horrific reality that was the dark empire, there were some sinister things that even they had no idea how to get rid of.

It was why sealing off the dark tower had been the best bet. For whatever still lurked would remain locked up within this tower for all eternity, unable to make its way into the real world.

And the second reason was the fact that the presence lingered for only a curious moment before it disappeared, so swiftly that oftentimes, Xenon had to question if he was just being overly sensitive, or if it had ever been there at all.

Xenon was not certain what the presence was exactly, but as much as he tried to ignore it and pretend like he could not sense them, it was becoming increasingly annoying.

Initially the presence was silent, distant, watching and sometimes attempted to draw Xenon to be curious enough to find it out, but in recent days, it had grown more bolder. First it began with murmurs and inaudible whispers in the walls, until now when they full on bickered.

If Xenon had been anywhere else in the world, he would have concluded that such a strange occurrence meant he was losing his mind once again...but Xenon knew better what the wild haze felt like, and it was not this.

The wild haze was in the past for Xenon, never to rear its ugly head again since Neveah’s mark was imprinted on him, so what exactly was this?

There were all manner of strange things that had taken place in this dark tower, Xenon was not even surprised by this encounter, he was just unsightly, the fact that it seemingly affected him alone

’And how would you know that? There is no sign of his dragon form all this while...not a single black scale in sight.’ The third voice whispered again.

’If it isn’t him, who could this be then?’ The first voice asked.

’He...look! He is waking up!’ The second voice exclaimed in panic.

’Do you think he can hear us?!’ The first voice exclaimed too.

’It couldn’t be!’ The second voice exclaimed.

"I was never asleep... and yes, I can hear you." Xenon’s low grumble sounded in the room as his eyes slowly came open.

’Eeep! Run! Quickly!’ The first voice screeched.

Xenon’s brows twitched in annoyance, he did not even bother glancing around the room, he was certain there would be nothing to see.

As haunting as those voices were, night after night, Xenon was not all that bothered. It would take a whole lot more than some whispers at night to get to him, dark magic and its manifestations had always been aimed to prey on the emotions, triggering feelings of fear, disgust and the likes.

But Xenon was indifferent to it at this point. If the dark lord’s spirit walked into this room at this moment, Xenon was not certain he would care much for it, all the care he could muster was channeled at finding his way back.

Xenon just stared up at the ceiling for a moment. The voices were long gone, retreating to whatever pit of darkness they had crawled up from in the dark tower, leaving Xenon to wonder if it had once again been a trick of his mind, or if it truly had happened.

The sun had begun rising for the first time in much too long. It would have been at least a few days since the last sun rise.

Xenon had not gotten a moment of sleep all the while, from the shrieks of the shadow beasts and shadow people far out in the dark lands, to the whispers within the walls of the shadow tower, Xenon was not certain he would ever be able to rest easy till he was as far away from this cursed place as possible.

"Thankfully, dragons can go without sleep for long periods." Xenon murmured to himself.

Xenon got to his feet and grabbed his outer robe, making his way to check in on Verothrax.

Arriving there, Xenon found that for the first time in quite a while, Verothrax was conscious and sat up on the bed, watching Ida move around, adjusting the covers around him.

Verothrax lifted a questioning look to Xenon, gesturing to Ida with his eyes but Xenon shrugged indicating he also did not know what to make of the strange woman.

"How long have I been..." Verothrax asked, trailing off at the end.

"A long, long time." Xenon replied, walking over to the side of Verothrax’s bed.

Xenon lifted a hand to feel Verothrax’s temperature but Verothrax’s expression changed. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Do not touch me!" Verothrax hissed with a frown, his dark eyes narrowed into a glare.

Xenon scoffed beneath his breath and still went ahead to check on Verothrax’s temperature.

"You are in your right mind, alright." Xenon said in approval.

Verothrax nodded slowly, exhaling a lazy sigh before his lips tilted into a melancholic smirk.

"So...the dark tower... this is interesting... this is where it all began." Verothrax said, glancing around.
