Chapter 580: The Broken World (Ch.581)

’I should have said more... insisted on going with him...held him back... anything...’ Came the reoccurring thought in Neveah’s mind, a thought that never ceased to plague her in the past month.

But regrets would not change the fact that the world had been broken, and while Neveah was on this side... everything she cared about was on the other side.

Neveah pushed open the door to the meeting hall, shaking off the memories that had flooded her mind.

"Dune Lord." The dune enforcers greeted.

Neveah did not comment on the address, instead, her gaze roamed around the meeting hall.

A month ago, the round table had been filled and had even required the addition of more seats to fit the guests who had arrived at Dune Castle.

Those added seats had not been taken away, and so the absence of multiple presence from the table was glaringly obvious.

Even amongst the original seats at the table for the ranks of the dune enforcers, there was still an obvious emptiness.

The place belonging to Rodvan and Orin who were amongst the dozen dragons to accompany King Jian beyond the barrier...

The place belonging to Kaideon, who was gone even before that day a month ago...

Neveah had not ordered for the meeting hall to be rearranged, if not for anything but for the reminder it gave...of what was gone.

Neveah took a seat at the head of the table and gestured for the dune enforcers to sit.

For a moment, Neveah was silent, preparing her mind to receive the reports the dune enforcers had to give.

"The miasma patrol...let us begin there." Neveah said, looking to Coran for the report on his part.

Coran nodded and got up to his feet, he walked over to the large map that hung from a pillar in the meeting hall.

"As we are all aware, a month ago...in his bid to suppress the death gale, Verothrax’s void ability lost control, a turn of events that came as a bolt of lightning through a clear sky, for all of us..." Coran began.

"Rather than banishing the death gale into a void of space as was his intent, Verothrax unleashed a void space right at the borders of Dune City,"

"A space so powerful it ripped right through the earth and formed a great canyon with the dark miasma... breaking the world...in two..." Coran trailed off.

Silence dawned on the meeting hall, every mind drawn back to the day it had all happened.

Everyone had their own recollection of what had happened that day... and Neveah would never have believed it was even possible, if she had not witnessed it herself.

"The mages have provided a formula to restore Fort Blazed, one they have been working on. This past year...there has not been a moment we have relented in our attempts to recover Fort Blazed."

"The formula involves several ley lines the dark sorcerers use to enhance their most powerful spells and the only way to reach them is by flight... once these points are destroyed, the spell will be reversed and Fort Blazed will return to it’s place." Xenon revealed.

Neveah nodded slowly, King Jian truly had a plan all along.

"And the other part of the plan is Verothrax’s ability."

"Right beyond the barrier, a short distance ahead, the death gale lurks, growing stronger since we triggered it by flight in the dark lands. The moment my kind takes flight anywhere in the dark lands, it will attack immediately."

"But in order to secure the safety of Fort Blazed, we must find the ley lines in the dimension planes. The dimension planes are ridden with all kinds of shadow beasts..."

"Even if they were to get beyond the death gale like Kaideon, Coran and Rodvan did, the death gale would attack the dragons from behind the minute they take flight."

"It is a risk they cannot take and so, the death gale has to be eradicated before they arrive at the barrier... this is Verothrax’s main mission." Xenon explained to Neveah.

"Is that why Verothrax was awakened a year ago? For this very reason?" Neveah asked, forcing down the chilling shudder as she thought back to the terrifying glimpse she had caught of the pale as death dragon lord, Verothrax. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

It had just been a glimpse from a distance, Xenon would not allow Neveah near Verothrax but Neveah had stubbornly spied when Verothrax bid greetings to King Jian.

No one had sensed Neveah’s presence watching from the distance, but Verothrax had. The moment he turned, his terrifying black orbs... nothing like Xenon’s, looked straight at Neveah’s hiding place,

And then his lips had stretched into a sinister grin, one that sent a cold chill of terror down Neveah’s spine.

Verothrax had done something surprising, he inclined his head to a bow in Neveah’s direction and so Neveah had known then...that Verothrax could tell from where he stood and just that one glimpse, that Neveah carried the Dragon King’s scale.

It was only a glimpse, but it was enough to tell Neveah, that Verothrax was not an existence she wanted to be acquainted with.

"Indeed. The nature of Fort Blazed’s disappearance a year ago was unique, just like the Lost Isle of Kezrar Dun. Jian has long suspected, that the spell involved would require Verothrax’s ability to be neutralise...none of us can move the earth itself as the dark sorcerer did." Xenon murmured.

"And that is equally why we have taken a year to go for Fort Blazed, first because its exact location was unknown... secondly because Verothrax was not ready to bear such responsibility, till his ability was stabilized."

"And it took a year, before we were certain he could be used." Xenon admitted.

"How come Verothrax is so volatile?" Neveah asked worriedly.

"Verothrax is not volatile, Veah. His ability is... sometimes beyond him. It is why we never bring him into the picture, unless absolutely necessary... and this is one of such situations."

"That is another reason it has to be Verothrax and not Demevirld. Even if Demevirld can hold the barrier, he cannot vanquish the death gale...if he musters such magic, it will rip you apart Veah... magic is, horrid even to it’s wielders." Xenon said, his tone dark at the mere thought.
