Chapter 568: Dune Lord (Ch.569)

The sound of a shuffling movement awakened Neveah and her eyes slowly came open.

Neveah squinted slightly, her gaze searching her quarters to identify the source of the sound.

Neveah’s search ended quickly when her eyes settled on Everon who was crouched down on the floor, his head turning from one side to the other.

"What are you doing acting so strangely in someone else’s room?" Neveah asked curiously, her voice hoarse from disuse.

Everon’s gaze snapped up, his eyes met Neveah’s and a fond smile stretched across his lips.

"My dear Veah, you are even more salty than I remember." Everon commented, standing up straight.

"You did not answer my question." Neveah murmured tiredly, her gaze trailing Everon who walked over to her bed.

"Is that the first thing you want to say to me, after a year? You do not want to know how I came to be here?" Everon asked Neveah with a raised brow.

Neveah rolled her eyes, her lips twitched slightly in amusement.

"I can guess...to an extent. You have come a long way." Neveah murmured, moving her gaze to stare up at her ceiling.

It was not so difficult for Neveah to recall what had happened before she lost consciousness, the memory hit her the very moment her eyes came open.

Her entire body still ached terribly and she felt strange, completely unlike herself.

"It is good to see you, Everon." Neveah finally said, returning her attention to Everon who now sat by her bedside.

Everon studied Neveah quietly, he opened his mouth to speak but shut it back again and then repeat, Neveah did not need to ask to know what was on his mind.

"Surprise..." Neveah announced hoarsely.

Everon shook his head slightly, reaching a hand out to Neveah’s forehead.

Neveah stayed in place and let Everon perform his examination unhindered.

"How long do I have left? Am I going to die?" Neveah asked Everon.

Everon scoffed at Neveah’s depressing words.

"Undisturbed rest for a few days and you will recover with no trouble." Everon said, getting up to his feet.

"Ironic...you took this much more calmly than the last time." Neveah murmured quietly.

Everon did not respond immediately, he only paused slightly in his step.

"Given the circumstance, the result of a backfire back then was certain...now, the possibility is negligible." Everon replied.

Neveah was not surprised at that, the merging she had chosen and consented to had nearly claimed her life,

But this... the one that had been given without her consent had the direct opposite effect.

Instead of a backfire, if Neveah overlooked the aftereffects of the pain, she felt energised, and strangely...at ease.

"A true bond truly is unrivalled..." Neveah said, chuckling quietly.

"Xenon will be here anytime now. He left not long before you regained consciousness." Everon relayed to Neveah.

Everon’s words did not quite match his expression and Neveah frowned slightly.

"Tell me." Neveah requested, she knew well enough when Everon was withholding information.

Everon raised a brow at Neveah’s request.

"Do not act like you do not know what I mean..." Neveah began and then she trailed off.

"Xenon and Jian both left me in your care..." Neveah murmured, realising how strange that was of both possessive men.

"What day is today? How long was I unconscious for?" Neveah asked Everon suspiciously

"Neveah, you need rest." Everon deflected.

Two days, Kaideon was to return in two days. It had already been two days.

"Everon... where is my father?" Neveah asked warily.

"Veah..." Everon trailed off for a moment.

"Lord Rodvan and Coran returned a short time ago... I do not know the details, but it seems Lord Kaideon did not return with them." Everon revealed.

Neveah pushed off the covers and got down to her feet, her teeth gritted against the lingering on aches.

She ignored Everon’s attempts to dissuade her, heading out of her room.

"At least put on your shoes Veah..." Everon called after Neveah but Neveah was already hurrying down the hall on her bare feet.

Neveah headed straight for the meeting hall where she knew the Dune enforcers would be, shoving open the doors the moment she arrived.

Within the hall, King Jian stood, his back faced to the door and his hands crossed behind his back.

Xenon was also present, along with the rest of the Dune enforcers and there was one more person, a face Neveah had known she would have to meet but had hoped not to.

And it was he who spoke first, when everyone else had fallen into pin drop silence at Neveah’s arrival.

"Neveah..." Menarx said, in a voice that was barely above a whisper.

Neveah’s gaze lingered on Menarx for a moment, but she did not have the luxury to acknowledge his presence.

Her gaze shifted to Rodvan and Coran, the two dune dragons who had escorted her father into the dark lands.

Their heads were lowered and neither of them dared meet Neveah’s eyes. They looked worse for the wear too, Neveah noted.

"Rodvan... where is my father?" Neveah asked cautiously.

"Say something!" Neveah hissed when no one spoke for a moment.

Rodvan winced visibly at Neveah’s tone before he stepped forward, stretching a hand out to Neveah.

Held in his hand was a necklace with a pendant, it was the same pendant that spelled her mother’s name, the very pendant her father carried on his person at all times.

"We searched as far into the dark lands as the day light would allow...but this was all we found..." Rodvan revealed in a grim tone.

"I... what are you saying to me?" Neveah asked slowly, staring warily at the pendant.

"We believe the Dune Lord has been taken to Fort Blazed." Xenon interrupted, placing a hand on the small of Neveah’s back.

At Xenon’s touch, Neveah released a breath she had not even realized she was holding.

"All signs indicate he is unharmed...but for how long..." Coran trailed off when Rodvan passed him a glare.

"The Dune Lord has left orders, if anything were to happen to him... as heir, you must assume the title and all associated duties immediately."

"Neveah Vairheac, till Kaideon’s return... you are now Dune Lord." Rodvan revealed,

Neveah’s hands trembled and she clenched them into tight fists at her sides.

Neveah reached out and took her father’s pendant before she turned and left the meeting hall, fighting the tears that gathered in her eyes.
