Chapter 559: A Bad Move (Ch.560)

Azkar stared after Neveah, a ghost of a smile settled on his lips. It was neither a sinister nor a malicious smile but a smile that actually appeared genuine.

Though with Azkar, one could never tell for certain what truly went through his mind.

"If you detested me, you would not care what happened to me...yet you left a warning. You have grown weak since the hidden city, Neveah... you know empathy now, and you do not even realise it." Azkar clicked his tongue quietly.

"Yet even now, you are all the more intriguing." Azkar murmured, chuckling to himself.

"My Lord." Leon’s voice sounded as he emerged from the shadows.

Where he had been all the while, one could not guess.

"You came here in such a hurry to save the girl. What about our business here?" Leon asked Azkar.

Azkar shook his head slightly, glancing around the storehouse.

The stench of blood was pungent in the air and the sight was one Azkar would tag as a work of art.

"Let the Fae handle their mess. The seeds of discord have already begun bearing fruits, it will not be long now, before the alliance between the Fae and dragon kind fully crumbles."

"We have done our part, we should not get in Neveah’s way." Azkar decided.

"Then where to next? Fort Scabbard?" Leon enquired.

"That is a matter you must now take charge of." Azkar said to Leon.

"Me? Where would My Lord be?" Leon asked in confusion.

"Now, I shall let the girl have her way...here, on dragon territory. She has earned that...as Dragon Queen." Azkar murmured.

"But on my lands? That is a different game entirely. It would be unseemly to give back Fort Blazed so easily, would you not agree?" Azkar murmured, his brows twitching slightly, the only visible sign of his displeasure.

"Scales, Veah! Where have you been? I was beginning to think you had been captured." Tara exclaimed as Neveah stepped into the room.

Tara glanced over Neveah, her eyes widening slightly when she picked up on the blood stains Neveah had done her best to conceal on her return to the room.

However, what she could successfully conceal from others would not miss Tara’s eyes.

"You said not to kill anyone." Tara reminded Neveah of her own instructions.

"It... just happened. We should get out of here." Neveah said to Tara quickly.

"Not before you see this." Tara said.

Tara handed Neveah a note that had been slipped onto the dinner tray that had been delivered to them.

Neveah took the note and read through it, her eyes widened slightly.

’The target is Lord River.’ The note read.

It was clearly instructions left for Sir Blackbird, this was his kill order.

"The Fae intend to get rid of Lord River?" Neveah asked in surprise.

"The note came along with a map of the layout of the light hall." Tara reported, handing the map to Neveah.

Neveah scanned the map, nodding slowly.

"We certainly must pay Lord River a visit. What exactly has he gotten himself into?" Neveah murmured as she stored the map and note away.

"There is just one little problem, we are to have company." Tara revealed to Neveah.

Neveah’s brows narrowed slightly, glancing over at Tara.

"It seems, the task was not entrusted to you alone. The Light Hall is not a place to be so easily infiltrated." Tara said meaningfully.

"How much company exactly do we speak of?" Neveah asked, stripping off the maid’s attire.

"I cannot tell for certain. But they are saddled and await you in the courtyard." Tara said,

"Shall we shake them off and return to the castle?" Tara asked Neveah.

Neveah shook her head slightly at Tara’s suggestion.

"If what you have just said is accurate, then Lord River is to die tonight. Be it by the hands of Sir Blackbird or another." Neveah murmured.

"I would have it be my own hands. He cannot be allowed to die with the secrets he hold... whatever Lord River knows, it is big enough to be concerning to the Fae." 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"Which means, Lord River is the leverage we seek... against the Fae." Neveah said thoughtfully.

"Will you be able to get him to speak? He even dared defy His Grace." Tara pointed out in concern.

"Not I, maybe. But I am hoping Sir Blackbird will have more luck where the rest of us have been unable."

"Lord River still holds some loyalties to the Fae. He must feel some kind of sentiments that prevent him from betraying them, even with his life and honor at stake...he is after all still a Fae by blood and heritage." Neveah guessed.

"Sadly, his sense of duty is gravely misplaced and he will realise just how wrong he is when he comes to know that the Fae have betrayed him first without hesitation." Neveah supplied.

"But he was willing to die to keep his secrets, that much was made obvious when he blatantly lied before His Grace, that in itself is a crime punishable by death...he knows well that there is no path in which he gets out of this alive." Tara replied.

"That is the problem Tara. Traitors are never forgiven, regardless of reason. Lord River knows breaking dragon laws is certain death... and if he is to die anyways, he will die protecting the secrets he keep."

"But we mortals are interesting creatures. Would his resolve remain the same when that death he sought from the hands of the dragons is being delivered by his own kind he seeks to protect?" Neveah asked.

"The Fae will not relent in their efforts to get rid of Lord River, because they know Lord Menarx’s arrival will be the end of it...they have to kill Lord River first, before Menarx gets to him... that way, it all comes to an end."

"Even without the Fae, to escape the fate coming to him, Lord River would have found an opportunity to take his own life for fear of Menarx."

"His Grace knew this, he knew it would require caution to wait for Menarx’s arrival... even I can tell what kind of man Lord River is, but the Fae have failed to trust in his loyalty."

"They have made a bad move, Tara. And this changes everything." Neveah finished.
