Chapter 535: Agitated (Ch.536)

Azkar tapped his foot against the ground in quick succession, his brows were furrowed up in agitation and try as he might to contain it, he just could not.

It was a displeasing end to a day that had begun with much anticipation and excitement and Azkar detested it...he completely loathed when things did not go as he had planned.

He loathed it so much, he could destroy everything in his sight just to soothe his rage and that intense urge to cause carnage and leave a trail of darkness in his wake.

"Why did he have to show up?!" Azkar hissed in rage.

His head twitched to the side ever so often, revealing the blackened veins at the sides of his neck and a cloud of shadows hovered all around him, attesting to Azkar’s mood.

"Why did he have to show up, Leon?! Why?!" Azkar hissed again.

"My Lord, you must calm yourself..." Azkar’s subordinate, Leon reasoned.

Leon glanced around the cave in the forest, watching the gathering shadows warily.

"The day had been just perfect! Everything was going according to plan! He just had to show up!" Azkar hissed.

The girl was perfectly at ease in his company, believing him to be just any ordinary human.

And she smiled genuinely in his presence, a rare expression that Azkar found all the more stunning on her.

Azkar had never found the human race as lucky as he did when he was with her.

While she would always have her guard up with any other race, Azkar had realised there was something about the human race that she favoured.

He had watched her mingle with them with not an ounce of prejudice, even as distinguished as she now was.

And if there was one thing that stood the test of time in the stronghold,

Despite the illusion of unity, there was the irreconcilable prejudice each race had against the other and the common prejudice against the far less gifted human race.

Azkar understood prejudice, in a world like the stronghold where each race battled for the ultimate power, that was what made sense.

What he could not understand was the girl and why she could be so at ease amongst a weaker race.

Perhaps it was because she found them less complicated than the other races full of malice and deception but Azkar had lived long enough to know there was not a single race that was without it’s darkness.

But none of that mattered, her favor to the human race had given Azkar the opportunity he would not have gotten otherwise.

Azkar had slowly figured out how exactly he could get past her walls and approach her.

How long had it taken him to devise a means to approach the girl? It had taken months of consciously plotting coincidental encounters in a way that was inconspicuous enough to escape her notice.

The girl was far from ordinary, Azkar had known he would need to be extremely cautious and he had not put so much effort into anything like he had into creating this new identity that could get past her strong instincts.

Azkar had not even considered the possibility of what he had realized today, that the woman he was so intrigued by,

Neveah, she was actually the true bonded of the Dragon King.

How had that even happened? Was that why he had found her so interesting?

Azkar had not known of this at all, his informant had only relayed word of the glowing barrier, a testament of the rise of Demevirld... had he heard the full story, he would already have figured it out.

It was only now Azkar heard word of the circumstances surrounding it, that the feat had not been achieved by the girl alone, there had been someone else.

"They were bonded...they were actually bonded..." Azkar murmured to himself, thinking back to the scene at the forest.

Azkar had only now realised it after receiving a full report from Leon on what had truly happened at the barrier.

Not many other than the dragons would have understood that scene, the city buzzed with word of the girl’s magical ability only, they were yet to put together what was infact the greater concern.

It had not been often in these centuries that Azkar set eyes on the Dragon King, and for good reason.

All these years, Azkar had done everything he could but one thing, crossing paths with the Dragon King,

He had not dared conceive the thought just yet, not when he was yet to acquire all it would take to bring down the Dragon King.

Azkar had taken his leave in a hurry the moment he sensed the Dragon King’s presence and it angered Azkar greatly that he had retreated once again, not for the first time in these centuries.

What was even more aggravating was just how belated this realisation had come.

Had Azkar known, even had but the slightest idea, Azkar would not have missed the opportunity to take the girl away this time.

An opportunity that Azkar knew just might be his last, with the Dragon King now in the picture.

"What will you do now, will you do as His Lordship wishes? Deliver the girl to him?" Leon asked.

Azkar’s brows twitched in annoyance, even now, even with this discovery, he still was not willing to put the girl in harm’s way.

"I reckon even that will not be so easily achieved now. The Dragon King will not let her out of his sight..." Azkar murmured.

"Then what shall we do? We have but six months and with the Dragon King present, it will be dangerous for you to linger around the girl." Leon worried.

Azkar breathed a sigh, it was a risk he would just have to take.

"I will have to tread cautiously now. But more than that, an opportunity will not present itself to us...we must create one ourselves." Azkar decided.

"And His Lordship’s orders?" Leon asked apprehensively.

"When I have the girl in my hands, I will decide then... for what purpose she would best serve." Azkar murmured.
