Chapter 502: Only Way (Ch.503)

"I..." Neveah began to say but was cut off.

"We have to leave... now." King Jian interrupted, his tone firm and serious, leaving no room for arguments.

Neveah was at a loss as King Jian pulled her by her wrist, along with him. The moment they were fully out of the cave, a horrified gasp escaped Neveah as her eyes took in the strange phenomenon in the sky.

And she finally understood King Jian’s urgency.

Far off in the distance, where it seems like the land met the sky, a furious gale of wind blew and a massive swirling mass of shadows churned.

It was akin to a tornado, swirling furiously with a deathly vengeance and it moved with such great speed, swallowing up the lands as it made its way to them.

There were lightening strikes tearing through the swirling mass of shadows and while Neveah could not begin to imagine the state of the earth, every part of the sky touched by that tornado of shadows was completely swallowed up in darkness.

It was like the tornado sucked out the daylight, blocking out the sun and converting the sky into a dark, gloomy blanket.

The lands beyond the barrier had always been strange, the skies themselves were much different in color from that on the other side of it, having a darkish purple hue rather than sky blues.

But this darkish purple was now a pitch black, and it swallowed up even more of the sky as the tornado advanced at an unbelievable speed.

Wherever it touched, light gave way for darkness and the day descended into night. It was like the shadows were consuming the sun they feared and laying claim to the territory.

Neveah did not need a sooth sayer to tell her that whatever that was coming at them, whatever had stirred that turbulence of shadows, it would leave nothing alive in its wake.

It was no wonder there was no life that could be sustained out here, the devourer of all life had laid its mark on these lands.

Forbidden...cursed swamps, it was everything anyone had told Neveah it was.

Not even just a barrier, Neveah would have built walls from her own blood if it would keep that away from the people.

Not even her freedom or supremacy of all skies, Neveah would be willing to be caged for her entire existence if this monstrous phenomenon could be warded off for all time.

Neveah’s eyes were wide with horror, even when King Jian appeared in her line of sight, blocking off her view of what Neveah could only classify as the coming of death.

"Do not look at it...do not get shaken, I will get you back safely... trust me." King Jian assured Neveah,

He placed a hand on her shoulder, tightening his grip firmly so her attention was drawn to him and she looked away from what came at them.

"Neveah, I will not have anyone else come out here to get us, not even your father...no matter what happens." King Jian made clear.

Neveah could barely focus on what King Jian was saying, her gaze still strayed over to the approaching death, her mind reeling from what she was witnessing.

"Veah! Listen to me!" King Jian hissed insistently.

Neveah blinked, shaking her head slightly before she focused on King Jian, taking in his ever calm expression.

She had heard his words and she knew what King Jian meant, he would not risk endangering anyone else.

"I’m afraid any more of us through the barrier will weaken it, too much to withstand... that." King Jian said in a grim tone.

"It will sweep across Dune City faster than any plague you have ever seen and consume it all before we can contain it... I will not have that." King Jian continued.

"Now, I loathe your insane bravery and it hurts my head to contemplate why you are so fearless and face every situation with confidence...but I need you to be just that now, Neveah."

"And I need you to trust me... completely. And believe that I will not let you be harmed, not by the living or the dead... certainly not by shadows or dark magic." King Jian vowed solemnly.

Despite the uncertainty of the situation they faced, despite the fact that the person saying these words was infact King Jian,

That vow was more earnest than anything Neveah had heard in her lifetime, it sat deeply in her heart and any fear she could have harbored dispersed instantly.

Neveah believed him completely, King Jian was not a man to lie.

"Dune City is my city, I will do anything. Just tell me what I need to do." Neveah said with a nod.

"You have...we have just one way out of here. Do you understand my meaning?" King Jian asked Neveah, searching her eyes.

Neveah did understand King Jian’s meaning, there were no portals left, Neveah had messed up the only chance at leaving this cursed place without any compromise.

Now, the only way out was in the same way King Jian had come... flight.

And there was not even a moment to doubt or second guess it, every moment counted...not just for her own life, but that of the greatest leader the dragons had known, their King.

"Forgive me, I have brought it to this and I will compensate in anyway for forcing you to endure this..." Neveah whispered in a heavy tone.

She knew no way else to apologise for what was about to happen, she would have to ride King Jian and Neveah knew just how lofty and proud the Dragon King was.

Neveah knew King Jian had never entertained a rider in all his centuries of existence, no one that lived or breathed was worthy...no one.

But here they were, and of all people, it was her... Neveah, the thorn in the Dragon King’s side.

King Jian furrowed his brows slightly, watching Neveah’s expression for a moment in complete bafflement.

"Listen, Neveah...it is my honor, to first be ridden by the fiercest woman I have ever known. There is nothing to forgive." King Jian clarified.
