Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 501: Stay Put ()
A crash shook the cave from outside, followed by an ear piercing shriek, and then eerie growls here and there...a host of sounds echoed through the forest continuously as the battle ensued.
The shrieks originated from different directions, beyond the capacity of a single shadow beast, it sounded more like a dozen of them, or a horde attacking at once.
The battle itself was far off from Neveah’s sight, all Neveah could hear were the sounds as she sat in the dimly lit cave,
Constantly reminding herself that all she could do right at the moment was sit still and stay out of King Jian’s way like he had ordered.
It was hard having nothing to do, nothing for company but her thoughts, while the world was overturned all around her.
It was a strange feeling to Neveah, that she was kept away from the danger while someone else faced it all on his own, more willing to face it alone than catch a sight of her anywhere close by.
And while Neveah was never one to comply with orders, she knew this time, she was in the wrong. She had pushed King Jian many times already, this was one time she could not afford to be hard headed.
’He will be fine...he is the Dragon King.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her, in a bid to offer some comfort.
Neveah was not certain why her wolf felt she needed to be comforted, she was even more uncertain why she felt like she was holding her breath and just waiting for the calm to be restored to the forest, so she could let out the breath she was holding.
Whatever it was, Neveah had no reason to doubt her wolf’s reassurance, it was only that she had put as much...no, even greater faith in Xenon that he would be unhurt, but the sight she had met still filled her with terror just thinking about it.
"There is something about this place... I do not know what it is...it is horrid, and unsuitable for the dragons... something about this place affects them adversely." Neveah murmured her thoughts aloud.
Why else would the beasts of Asvar who cherished freedom more than anything else, be willing to cage their own selves and their entire world within an impenetrable barrier?
The world was so big and vast, why would they let their world end at the barrier on every side when they could claim a greater territory? 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Why were the lands beyond the barrier forbidden and why did the dragons themselves steer clear of it completely?
Neveah did not have all the answers, all she could do was wait...wait till the immediate threat was taken care of and King Jian returned for her.
Time flew by and after what Neveah guessed was a half hour, the sounds of battle finally quietened and the forest was restored to eerie silence.
Neveah glanced over at the entrance to the cave, waiting to see King Jian appear but there was no sign of him even after waiting for a good while.
"Where is he... could he be...." Neveah began to say but cut herself off,
She could not dare say the words that lay on the tip of her tongue, or contemplate the consequences of that horrible thought.
Neveah was tempted to get up to her feet, but King Jian’s stern warning replayed through her mind.
"He said not to leave..." Neveah murmured uneasily.
But how could she sit tight when she had no idea what exactly was happening outside the cave she was in?
"Damn it!" Neveah hissed in frustration as she got up to her feet.
Neveah was still pacing, deep in her own thought when the aura in the cave plummeted to something dark and horrid.
There was that stench on the air, one Neveah had come to recognize to be dark magic and Neveah’s hairs stood on end, her stomach clenched within her and her heart beat slowed.
All these were triggered by her instincts and so Neveah did not even need to turn around to know what stood at the entrance of the cave.
Neveah stood perfectly still, she did not move in the slightest or turn around to see for herself, neither did she react when a low shriek echoed into the cave, sounding terribly close.
’If the beast could get to me, it means King Jian...’ Neveah thought to herself.
’Do not think the worst yet, these beasts are formed from shadows...it would be near impossible to completely block them out.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her.
Neveah understood that, King Jian battled a horde all by himself, one of the persistent beasts could surely have snuck past him without his notice...
The one thing shadow beasts could do best was sense the slightest movement and Neveah had been pacing around the cave.
’The cave is too small, we cannot shift in here.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her.
’Then we have to leave.’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.
Neveah sucked in a deep breath, contemplating her next move. The very moment the beast sensed her movement, it would lunge and so Neveah had to be completely certain of the step she was about to take.
She had to be completely certain she could be swift enough to get around the shadow beast to the entrance of the cave, only battling out in the open could lessen her disadvantage.
’Now!’ Neveah’s wolf instructed.
Neveah did not hesitate, spinning around, she was about to leap forward but paused right in her step when she caught sight of a blank faced King Jian toying with a fist full of flames.
The beast shrieked loudly, wildly staring around with it’s hollow eyes, in search of Neveah.
King Jian was right behind the beast and stared pointedly at Neveah.
No words were needed, Neveah knew she was in the way, in a swift move, she dipped to the ground and slid underneath the shadow beast, barreling into King Jian’s awaiting arms, just as he unleashed a torrent of flames.
As the shrieks of the beast faded into silence, King Jian’s flames also died out.
"Did you really think I would let it get to you?" King Jian asked in a low tone.
