Chapter 493: Something Else (Ch.494)

Jian stepped out of the cave, tilting his head back slightly as he was once again graced with daylight.

It was already quite late in the day and the sun would set anytime soon, but the daylight was a welcome change from the darkness and shadows of the cave.

"How did it go?" Cassian asked warily as he walked over to Jian from where he had been standing by the tree line.

Cassian stared behind Jian into the cave for a moment before his gaze moved back to Jian and though his attention had not lingered on the cave, the act did not escape Jian’s notice.

"I did not kill anyone." Jian muttered,

Jian’s brows twitched slightly in annoyance because it had taken everything in him not to do just that.

"So?" Cassian pressed.

"There is nothing to tell." Jian replied blankly.

"You were in there for three hours, Jian. How did you spend so long if there was nothing useful said?" Cassian asked in bafflement.

Three hours... Jian had also not realized such a long time had passed by.

At first, all Jian had wanted to do was leave after getting the answers to his questions...but things had not gone exactly as he planned.

"She barely told me any of the things I wanted to know...had me answer my own questions. But the things I did not wish to know... that she spoke a lot of." Jian related to Cassian what he was willing to share.

Jian still struggled to calm himself from his agitation, but Jian was not certain he would be successful anytime soon.

The thing about seers was the fact that they never provided a direct answer to anything, all they ever said were words full of obscurities and Jian had not really come expecting something different and so he was not surprised.

Not surprised at the fact that he had come to gain clarity but was even more confused now than he had been originally.

Jian’s mind was ridden with questions, and every question he had lead to another question.

And Jian could have demanded for his answers, forced it out of the seer if he had to, but Jian knew there were some questions to which he would have to find the answers himself.

"I had hoped the seer would at least provide a method to be rid of that haunting dream." Cassian said with a quiet sigh.

Jian shrugged casually, running a hand through his hair.

"I cannot believe I actually let you all convince me to consult a seer." Jian murmured beneath his breath.

Now that things had gone exactly the way he had guessed it would, Jian wondered why he had even bothered.

Nothing that was said would help him with the dreams, he would still be plagued by them at every moment of quiet... nothing had changed.

"It was worth the try. Let us return now." Cassian said, placing a comforting hand on Jian’s shoulder.

Jian was just about speaking when a sharp pain tore through his gut, so sudden and unexpected that Jian let out a quiet gasp.

Though his posture was unchanged, his hand shot up to grasp his chest, his actions alarming Cassian.

"Jian? What is it? Are you hurt?!" Cassian panicked, quickly supporting Jian’s weight with an arm around his shoulder.

"I...I..." Jian tried to speak but that sharp pain was spreading quickly, and it deprived Jian of his breaths.

"I will kill her!" Cassian hissed, making to storm into the cave with a vengeance.

Jian grabbed onto Cassian’s hand, shaking his head slightly.

He could already tell where that intense pain originated from and why he could feel it so strongly and so severely.

Amongst all his brothers, there was only one person whose pain Jian could feel to such an intense extent.

It was because beyond their bond, there was something else of his in Jian’s possession... something that made their bond far stronger than that with the other four.

"The pain...it is not mine...it is Xenon." Jian explained.

Cassian’s eyes widened slightly at Jian’s words.

"He was at the Dune City but he knew to meet us here...he should have long arrived here by now." Cassian said in concern as they now realized something had surely gone wrong.

"Go to the Dunes, find out the situation there and handle it accordingly. I will go to Xenon myself." Jian instructed Cassian.

Cassian nodded and dashed away, leaving Jian to himself.

There was a deadly glint in Jian’s eyes as his human form receded, giving way for the predator within.

Neveah searched through the forest, her eyes darting around frantically.

Every path looked much the same as the other and while Neveah had gotten this far relying on Xenon’s scent trail, she did not even know where she was or how far she had run.

It had taken a short while to cover the distance to where Xenon had fallen, even in her wolf form and Neveah had been delayed taking the unconscious merchant to a safe place.

Now, Neveah had arrived to the spot where Xenon had fallen and try as she might, she could not find him.

’He couldn’t have gotten hurt...it is Xenon, I mean...he is the strongest there is, a shadow beast could not have harmed him.’ Neveah thought to her wolf, seeking reassurance that she could not provide herself.

’I am certain he is close, stay calm.’ Neveah’s wolf assured. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Neveah nodded as she carried on searching through the forest, it was only a moment after that her eyes found him.

Xenon sat, leaned against a tree with one leg outstretched, his hand was rested on the knee of the other leg.

His head was lowered, his face hidden away by the hair that fell over his face.

"Xenon! Scales! Are you alright?!" Neveah exclaimed, rushing over to Xenon.

She crouched down beside him, her eyes quickly inspecting his form.

A sigh of relief escaped Neveah when she did not notice any injury, nor scent any blood,

However, the expression on Neveah’s face changed to one of confusion when Xenon spoke.

"You should...not be here...why are you here, Veah? You have to leave... leave me, now." Xenon’s voice was not the same rich baritone Neveah had gotten used to.

No... it was something else, it was that terrifying slow drawl...
