Chapter 483: Dislike (Ch.484)

"Your expression changed for a brief moment there, it passed quickly but I saw it..." Xenon accused knowingly.

"You are seeing things." Neveah countered sharply.

Neveah retreated away from Xenon’s intense gaze, turning around so she faced the opposite direction, the direction in which her horse had run off to,

And as Xenon’s breaths sounded closer, she wondered if she should have done the very same as her horse when she had the chance.

’If you cannot tell him, shall I do it for you?’ Neveah’s wolf who was mostly silent in recent times finally broke her silence and offered the most unwanted aid.

’There is nothing to tell!’ Neveah thought back to her wolf sternly.

"Fine, I will let it go for now. So do not look away from me." Xenon conceded, tugging Neveah’s arm so she would return her attention to him.

"Your horse is gone now. I do not reckon it will make its way back, so long as I remain your company." Xenon said in that familiar drawl of his.

"Do you feel proud of yourself that a horse is so terrified of you that it abandons its master?" Neveah asked with a raised brow.

"Well, the horse is not the only one affected by my presence, so yes... I must admit it is delightful." Xenon replied directly.

Neveah blanched at Xenon’s direct jab to what he had just said he would let go.

"Why do I even bother?" Neveah asked with a roll of her eyes.

"Come then, there is no point waiting around for your horse and another would not have a much better reaction." Xenon offered Neveah a hand.

"Xenon, I already said it, you cannot just take flight at will so close to the human settlement." Neveah dissuaded.

"Then I will take a detour around. Though it would not be their first time seeing a dragon pass by overhead. This is a dragon fortress in the first place." Xenon pointed out the obvious.

"They may have seen dragons, but not a black dragon, Xenon. Everyone knows Lord Xenon of Onyx Scales is the only black dragon in existence."

"And given your status, your presence here might become a cause for concern and stir unwanted panic." Neveah asserted. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Xenon tilted his head to the side, watching Neveah with suspicion.

"If I do not wish to be seen, then it will be so. I need only fly high enough and you know this. What truly is the problem, Veah?" Xenon asked Neveah, knowing there was more to her odd behavior than she was letting on.

"I... I do not like flying anymore." Neveah admitted.

Xenon’s brows furrowed in confusion at Neveah’s words, he studied Neveah’s expression for a moment in silence, realizing Neveah was not jesting.

More accurately, Neveah was making light of it by wording it as a mere dislike when infact it was much more, only that Neveah was not willing to go any further.

"When did this happen?" Xenon asked, placing a hand on Neveah’s shoulder.

Neveah breathed a quiet sigh, she also was not certain when exactly she had begun to dislike flying but ever since she arrived at the Dune Castle, Neveah had not gone anywhere near a dragon again.

Kaideon had tried numerous times to get Neveah to shake off the distaste she had developed for flight but it all proved futile.

It was as though after arriving at the Dune Castle, something in her had just snapped and an intense dislike for flight had become Neveah’s reality.

All this time, Neveah had not allowed herself give it too much thought, there was nowhere she would wish to go within Dune City that she could not go by land.

And even the White Dunes were just a day’s ride out, there had been no cause or necessity for flight and so there had been no reason to think over just why Neveah could no longer tolerate it.

"I do not know, it just did. And... I do not wish to talk about it." Neveah said quietly.

Xenon nodded in understanding, taking Neveah’s hand.

"Then we will not talk about it. The horse is here." Xenon said, gesturing to Caleb who had just arrived with another horse.

This time, the black horse has begun protesting from a long distance away and Caleb struggled to get it over to Neveah and Xenon, which explained why he had taken a little longer than was usual to return with the horse.

Caleb tugged at the reigns, muttering to the horse in exasperation as he walked over to Neveah and Xenon.

"My Lady, forgive the delay. I do not know why he is so agitated today, he was just fine when we left the stables." Caleb explained, glaring over at the still struggling horse.

Neveah on her own part glanced over at Xenon who looked completely innocent, if he had not admitted to it himself, no one would easily realize he was the very cause of the horse’s terrified reaction.

Even Caleb himself had constantly passed wary glances over to Xenon, but Caleb was a Dune castle guard and had dealt with dragons for years already.

Though he did not know Xenon’s identity, he was able to ignore Xenon’s aura for long enough to carry out his duties, dismissing it to the fact that Xenon was just another terrifying dragon lord.

Xenon walked over to the horse, he rested a hand on its mane and Neveah watched in astonishment as the horse went completely still, all its protests coming to an end.

Neveah was not sure if the horse was just frozen in terror or Xenon had truly calmed it with just a touch.

Caleb was also staring at Xenon in surprise and suspicion so Neveah was quick to intervene.

"Thank you, Caleb. He will do." Neveah said with a small smile.

Neveah walked over to the horse and easily mounted it before she glanced over at Xenon who waited expectantly.

With a roll of her eyes, Neveah offered Xenon a hand.
