Chapter 450: Wishful Thinking (Ch.451)

"Lord...lord Menarx...you shouldn’t be here...." Adrienne stuttered out, her feet shifting slightly, sending a few rocks tumbling down the cliff.

Her tone was thick with pain and self loathing, so pitiful that if one looked too much, it was easy to forget all the evil she had done and just how much hurt she had caused.

"What are you going to do? Jump? Do you really believe this will push me to change my mind?"

" I love Neveah! You never saw me but had eyes for Jian! You made your choices and now what?! What exactly do you want from me?!" Menarx snarled in frustration.

Menarx, he was a man of few words and a commendable temperament.

But when faced with his true bonded standing at the edge of a cliff, the same cliff Neveah had fallen off, it was impossible that even he would not lose his cool.

Neveah knew this, but knowing it did not make it any easier to accept.

"I do not dare hope to change your heart. I will die anyways, I have come to terms with my fate... everyone keeps prolonging it... trying to save me..." Adrienne whispered.

"I’m tired, I just want this to be done. Watching everyone make things difficult for you because of me... I feel too guilty to you, I do not want to be a burden. I know you want me gone and if this is the only thing I can do for you, I am willing." Adrienne pleaded in despair.

"I want you gone? Perhaps... perhaps that is what I want. If you knew anything about Menarx, you would know that if I wanted you dead, you would be dead Adrienne!"

"If I truly wanted you dead, Everon would not have preserved your life. Step away from the cliff, Adrienne... That is what you can do for me..." Menarx said, his tone exhausted and pained.

He had asked Neveah to trust him, he had asked Neveah not to let go of his hand and to trust in his love, and she had...to what end?

’Had I truly believed he would watch his true bonded die all for his love for me?’ Neveah thought to herself.

’I should not have left the council, I should not have come after him... I should not have witnessed this...’ There were many regrets that blossomed in Neveah’s heart as she watched the scene play out before her eyes.

A sharp, intense pain pierced through Neveah’s gut, spreading from that point to the rest of her body and Neveah doubled over slightly, clutching her stomach as she gasped for breath.

Menarx’s scale had begun reacting again, reminding Neveah that she was holding onto what could no longer be hers.

Neveah’s right hand rested against a tree to hold her weight up, her eyes were wide and teary and her bottom lip was tightly clamped between her teeth, so tightly that a trail of blood trickled down the side of her lip.

The pain was expected, but even so, it took every ounce of will in Neveah not to let out a scream, not that it would matter all that much if she did.

She knew what she needed to do so she did not have to be in pain, she was the one holding on... her choices were the reason for her pain.

There Neveah stood, concealed in the cover of trees, watching the man she called hers lose his cool for another woman, and what was worse, she so desperately wanted to loathe him, loathe his weakness but she could not bring herself to.

Instead she could not help but think, how hard it must be for Menarx to find himself in the position that he did, unwilling to care for his true bonded yet unable to control or prevent himself.

How could she cast blame when she knew better than anyone how deeply a true bond ran? She who had been unable to overcome a bond with a mate who had already killed her once?

Neveah had thought the day could not get any worse, after the events of the morning, all she had hoped for was a successful council and hopefully a peaceful rest afterwards, but of course, nothing ever went Neveah’s way.

How had it come to this, one might wonder? How had Neveah dressed in the most regal robes to represent the council ended up in the back mountain, tortured and in pain?

It had begun just an hour ago, just when the council was going according to how Neveah had hoped, it was exactly then that word arrived.

’Lady Adrienne...she disappeared!’

It was in that moment that Neveah should have gotten the answers she sought, the moment when Menarx tensed up visibly and looked to her as though seeking permission, yet he did not wait to receive it.

The moment when he chose to leave the council, a council where he knew Neveah would be faced with the scorn and scrutiny of everyone.

It was a feeling of Deja vu, Neveah had done the exact same thing on the night of the ceremony when Xenon had showed up.

Neveah’s lips stretched into a smile of derision. Karma had come back to her swiftly and brutally.

As though it had not been clear enough then, she had followed after Menarx, abandoning the council.

And here she was now, with all her fears as clear as day before her eyes. Neveah understood it then, that it was of no use to worry over losing Menarx.

Menarx... she had already lost him on that night where his reversed scale rejected their bond and her.

Menarx, she had not lost him to Adrienne, she had lost him to fate. To her own cruel fate that had haunted her all her life.

Menarx, he was just another time where the creator showed Neveah no mercies.

Menarx, he had never truly been hers from the start.

’It was all my wishful thinking... I should have known better...’ Neveah thought to herself.

It would have been more comforting if Neveah could bring herself to cry, her heart was shattered yet all she could feel was just... nothing.
