Chapter 416: Something Interesting (Ch.416)

The winged man hummed quietly, sitting at the cliff’s edge as he always did.

Of course, the tune he hummed was that favourite tune of his, the one where the words were long lost to his memory and only the tune remained, as prominent as though he heard it only the day before.

Meanwhile Celeste stood behind him, watching the calm and relaxed disposition of the winged man with a baffled expression.

The winged man was mostly always calm, it was rare for him to ever be anything otherwise, Celeste knew this.

But knowing that, Celeste reckoned if there was any reason to feel anything other than calm, now would surely have been the right time. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

The treasure the winged man so desperately searched for was gone, the very same treasure for which Celeste’s kin had given their lives.

It was gone and they knew exactly how it was gone, yet since that moment up until now, the winged man was yet to say a single word of the matter.

’Could it be that he was deterred by the identity of the wolf girl as Lady of Ruby Scales?’ Celeste wondered.

But Celeste knew that was unlikely, the winged man had no trouble ordering the death of the Lord of Ruby Scales himself, why would he be troubled now that it was just the Lady?

Celeste could not understand, she could not understand any of it and this silence that had lasted for close to a month was slowly killing her.

"My Lord, you have said nothing, you have given no orders. Azkar also is doing nothing, are we truly going to let things lie like this?" Celeste finally braved the question.

The winged man fell quiet at Celeste’s interruption, glancing over his shoulder at her, he raised a single brow to a perfect arch, the questioning expression on his face had Celeste fidgeting nervously.

"I... what I meant to say was, My Lord need only give the order and we will retrieve the treasure for you. Now that the girl is away from the Keep, she is easier prey."

"With her as bait, we could also get rid of the Lord of Ruby Scales. It would be killing two birds with a single stone, why do you hesitate?" Celeste adjusted in a more polite tone.

The gaze of the winged man lingered on Celeste for a short while, all through which he said nothing.

And just when Celeste was beginning to think she would get no response, the winged man chuckled quietly.

"Because it is interesting... this turn of events, it is very interesting..." The winged man murmured, his gaze moving back to staring over at the break of dawn.

Neveah heaved a quiet sigh, leaning back on her chair, she lifted a hand to rub her aching temples, a futile action that did nothing to relieve the painful throbs.

"Mi Lady should rest now, yer have been at it since Lord Conrad and his lady took their leave." Mor’rud suggested from where he sat across from Neveah,

He was there on Neveah’s request, waiting to answer any questions she may have had with his knowledge of the dwarf territory.

"What time is it now?" Neveah asked Mor’rud as she placed down the small map in her hand.

"It be dawn already." Mor’rud relayed to Neveah.

"Dawn?... It’s already dawn..." Neveah murmured, finally placing down the map.

Conrad and Fiona had left Neveah to herself since early noon and Neveah had gotten to work and had been at it since then, not even realising the passing of time.

"These marked out routes are good, but it is still far from a map if I do not piece it together and figure out the irrelevances. Equally, while a map is good, it will not be enough to keep the dragons safe in the tunnels. "

"The moment they step in, they will be at the mercy of the dwarf king. If he should restructure the tunnels, they will get lost within it. I must figure out all it’s twists and turns first...the entire layout so I can always find them a way around a dead end." Neveah murmured, staring at the map with furrowed brows.

Having to predict every possibility that could happen within the depth of those tunnels was one thing, having to map out angles to overcome those instances was another thing entirely.

"Mi Lady is thorough, yet yer need rest. Tomorrow is another day." Mor’rud still insisted.

"Tomorrow is already today." Neveah pointed out, her lips twitched slightly when Mor’rud fixed her with an exasperated look.

"You worry for me when you must be exhausted yourself, I will let you off now. I will call for you when I need you tomorrow." Neveah dismissed.

Mor’rud nodded, getting up to his feet, he lowered his head to a bow before he took his leave and Neveah was left to her thoughts.

’You already have everything put together, Veah. Rest now, you have barely slept these days and you are in need of it.’ Neveah’s wolf advised.

"If finding sleep was any easier, it would be nice." Neveah murmured, tidying up the work table before she got up to her feet and headed to the bath area.

Neveah washed her face and hands, changing into thicker clothing for the chilly winter night, she walked over to the bed and laid down, pulling the thick fur covers over herself.

The next hour or more passed by with Neveah lying in bed, staring up at nothing, it was only much later that her eyes grew heavy.

Just as Neveah drifted off to sleep and her mind and consciousness grew cloudy, a pair of arms encircled around her, bringing with them a pleasant and homely warmth...

But accompanied with that warmth was a strangely familiar scent, a scent Neveah had left far in the back of her mind for the longest time.

And while it might have been the exhaustion playing tricks on Neveah’s mind, the last thought registered by her sleepy mind was a single word said in a question.

’Xenon...?’
