Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 409: Dwarven Outposts ()
Dear Kaideon,
To be honest with you, it has taken me an hour of thought to craft this first letter. I must admit writing letters is not something I have found myself doing often and so it does feel a tad bit strange but I shall have to get used to it.
We have just arrived the dwarven outpost, it has taken us a day’s ride and Menarx tells me it shall take a few more days till you arrive the White Dunes.
I am at a loss as to where to send this letter but I shall send it ahead to the White Dunes so it is the first thing you see on your arrival and know that I am fine.
No one told me the dwarf outposts were vast, unending plains of unsullied nature.
I have heard of how large the Asvarian stronghold is but I never realized it was this large and... this beautiful.
I know I am currently on enemy territory and it should not be right to be so at peace but even the wind out here in the open feels different from the Keep.
I have a nagging desire to spend the night out here under the open sky, but I doubt Menarx or the dwarves would appreciate that much...sadly.
Sitting out here, staring over the vast plains underneath the open sky and writing of it to you... I finally feel like I can breathe properly.
Mundane and simple things such as this could actually ease my heart, how is it that I never knew this?
If this is what freedom feels like, how did I never realize such a beautiful feeling?
The days ahead are uncertain and battles cannot be avoided, but Kaideon, in all of this chaos... I think I might just find the meaning of happiness.
Sincerely Yours,
Neveah.
~I must add, I cannot figure out how this letter portal Menarx got me functions and he is conveniently away at the moment, I hope I do not end up sending this to the wrong place... magical instruments and magic itself is troublesome.
_______________
Under the cover of darkness, a supply team hurried across the plain, carrying with them over a dozen carts filled up with food supplies and other items that could not be identified from a distance.
The supply team consisted of about twenty dwarves and they were on high alert as they transported the goods across the plains.
The footprints and trail of the weighty cart which should have been left behind completely disappeared the moment the supply team had gone past, leaving behind no tracks whatsoever and no signs that they had passed by.
There was a faint ripple of magic in the air as a group of scouts watched the supply team from the top of a hill, unnoticed by the supply team.
The dwarves moved swiftly, intent on beating the rising of dawn and soon they disappeared into a forest far ahead.
"I wondered why Lady Neveah had us take a mage along, to cover up their tracks so perfectly, this is excellent concealing spell. Had we not brought along a mage of our own, we could not have seen through the veil concealing their presence." Conrad murmured.
"It is just as Lady Neveah predicted. Even after cutting off all supply routes, the dwarves still have a means to transport supplies to the inner citadel." Lodenworth said to Menarx.
"Should we not trail them?" Conrad asked Menarx.
"As Veah said, trailing them would prove futile. They have been able to keep the location of the inner citadel hidden for this long, they would not slip up easily."
"Mark the routes as Veah instructed. Conrad will keep watch, do not give away that we are unto them, the dwarves must keep on believing that the concealing spell cast over the plains is still in place." Menarx instructed, retreating from the hill, he disappeared into the forest behind.
Back at the camp of the second squadron, Neveah sat in Menarx’s tent, examining the map of the dwarven outposts as she had been for a few hours already since receiving word that the scout team would return soon.
It had already been a week since they arrived the dwarven outpost and Neveah had drafted out a strategy, still yet, there were a few loop holes she needed to cover up and this was why she anxiously awaited the report from the scouts.
Neveah’s attention was drawn away from the map when Menarx stepped into the tent, accompanied by Lodenworth.
"Beloved." Menarx greeted first, walking over to Neveah and placing a light kiss on her forehead.
"You’re back, how did it go?" Neveah asked.
"As you predicted, the inner citadel must be running low on supplies. They finally sent out a supply team and tried to conceal their movement from us with a spell but the mage was able to break through it." Lodenworth relayed.
"The supply routes have been cut off even before we arrived here, it was certain they would make a move one day or the next. Did you mark out the route?" Neveah asked. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"As you requested." Menarx replied with a nod, handing Neveah a smaller map with some points traced out.
Neveah studied the smaller map and placed it over the larger one, comparing the points.
"It’s been a week now, I’m ready to share my plan with you and the second squadron." Neveah finally said with a nod.
Menarx took a seat at the other end of the table and waited to hear what Neveah had been plotting for the past week of constantly sending out scouts on her instructions.
"The dwarf king is well aware that the dragons are keeping a close watch. He would wait till it was absolutely necessary before sending out a supply team."
"But one supply team cannot fend for the population of the entire inner citadel and a supply team that is too large would be easily noticed even if magic is used."
"And so if I were the dwarf king, I would send out multiple groups of smaller sizes through different routes over a period of time." Neveah explained.
