Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 392: The Voice ()
Neveah turned over on her bed, her mind still drifting to what Menarx had said about the rider council.
Davina had beat the petition drum which meant she had a matter of consequence to report to the council, but what exactly was a matter of consequence?
"She would not reveal what she did to the council would she? How would she explain kidnapping me and shipping me off to dwarf territory?" Neveah thought aloud.
But even if Davina intended to come clean, what did that have to do with the elven council and why had they gotten involved?
Neveah heaved a sigh, there was already too much to worry about because she had been silly enough to cover up for Davina for this long.
There was nothing to be done of it now, when whatever matters they had at the council had settled down, Neveah would take care of it then.
Neveah shook off any further thoughts, her eyes going closed as she tried to find some sleep and actually get the rest Everon kept insisting she needed.
It took a short time but eventually Neveah’s eyes grew heavy and just as she was about drifting off to sleep, a quiet but haunting voice echoed through her mind.
’Omega.’ The voice sounded in Neveah’s mind, barely audible but firm.
"Leave me alone, girl. And since when did you call me that?" Neveah murmured to her wolf aloud as she pulled the covers over herself, intending to ignore her wolf completely.
’Omega!’ This time, the voice hissed sharply in Neveah’s mind and Neveah shot up with a start, her eyes wide in shock.
Now while Neveah might have mistaken that first voice as her wolf being announced, a figment of imagination or some manner of trance, she certainly did not mistake the second voice.
Neveah had been bonded to her wolf all her life, she knew better than anyone what her wolf sounded like and Neveah’s wolf would never...never call her omega.
"That wasn’t you in my head...was it?" Neveah thought to her wolf warily.
"No Veah, it was not." Neveah’s wolf confirmed in an equally wary tone, her words sending Neveah into immediate alert.
Neveah glanced around her surrounding, a futile attempt since Neveah was pretty certain she would have sensed it if anyone had come in.
Unless of course, it was Menarx whose presence no longer triggered Neveah’s instinct as possible danger.
But even then, Neveah had been awake since Menarx had left a short time ago. It had not even been a half hour and her eyes had only gone closed for a short moment before this, not even Menarx could have come in unnoticed.
"Narx...are you in here?" Neveah asked cautiously as she slowly got off the bed and headed towards the washroom, she peered in and found it empty.
The entire room was empty, so was the balcony and the adjoined room that was Menarx’s closet.
Neveah frowned slightly, placing a hand on her forehead just to ensure her temperature was right.
"Am we hearing things now?" Neveah murmured to her wolf, shaking her head in disbelief.
"I’m pretty certain you told me I would not go rogue if I bonded with someone, whatever happened to that?" Neveah thought to her wolf again,
She recalled a short time ago, they had been on constant edge and it was the only explanation Neveah could think of at the moment.
"This has nothing to do with me going rogue, Veah. And I do not reckon we are hearing things." Neveah’s wolf thought back to her.
Neveah sighed heavily, walking over to the washroom, she filled up the bath with heated water and then stripped off her clothing before getting into the bath.
Neveah exhaled a breath of relief as she submerged herself in the water, leaving only her head out.
Neveah was pretty certain the water was extremely hot, it looked to be but she could hardly feel it, since the merging of fire, Neveah had noticed she gained some form of affinity for fire and heat.
It was not that Neveah was insusceptible to fire, it was only that she now had greater tolerance for scorching temperatures than she did before.
Neveah leaned her head against the edge, relaxing into the water and just when her ease was restored, it happened again.
’Omega!’ That demanding and harsh voice sounded in Neveah’s mind again, this time, it was accompanied by a pull so strong that Neveah found herself doubling over the edge of the tub like she had been kicked in the gut.
"Creator’s Fur!" Neveah exclaimed, quickly washing up and jumping out of the bath.
Neveah dried herself and drained out the water before she fetched a pair of Menarx’s plain tunics, and pulled on her leather breeches and boots.
’Omega...’ The voice sounded in Neveah’s mind again, this time a low taunt and Neveah groaned in annoyance.
"I’m standing aren’t I?!" Neveah hissed in annoyance.
"I know when my mind is messing with me and you are going to have to do a whole lot better that if you want to freak me out." Neveah murmured beneath her breath.
There was a knock on the door at that moment and Neveah did not need to glance over at it to recognize Estelle’s scent.
"Come in." Neveah permitted and sure enough, Estelle walked in with a tray of food.
"Veah...is everything okay?" Estelle asked as she glanced around the room with a confused expression.
"Yes, why not?" Neveah asked back, still lacing up her boots.
"You were just yelling at someone... and there is no one here." Estelle pointed out the obvious.
Neveah sighed, shaking her head slightly before she lifted her gaze to Estelle, a reassuring smile on her lips.
"I am fine, just have a lot on my mind." Neveah assured as she accepted the tray of food gratefully.
"Thank you, really." Neveah said.
"Also, I would like it if you didn’t do things like this for me, Estelle. You are a titled lady, not an attendant, and I prefer to handle such things by myself." Neveah stated
"I’m happy to, Veah. It’s nothing, you need someone to look after you till you are fully recovered and clearly, you do not get along with a lot of people around here." Estelle replied with a shrug.
