Chapter 39: Why Me? (Ch.39)

’Why?! Why me?!’ Neveah screamed within her heart as she dashed through the woods with all the speed she could muster, her breathing coming out in short pants.

Her heart was heavy with terror and panic and no matter how strained her muscles felt, it did nothing to ease that tight feeling in her heart.

How could anyone understand Neveah’s pain? How could anyone understand the horrifying reality it was to Neveah that her fated mate was infact Alessio Terran Lothaire?

A flash of lightening tore through the sky and a furious clap of thunder followed afterwards, the earth trembling furiously as though it would break apart at any moment.

And Neveah wished it would, she dearly wished the Earth would just open up and swallow her whole,

Such a fate would have been much more merciful than having to face her present reality.

Rain pelted down heavily, the branches and leaves of the towering trees providing little or no coverage from the pouring rain.

It was as though the heavens had taken note of the turmoil and despair churning through Neveah’s heart and reflected it with a sudden, furious downpour.

But Neveah wanted more than a downpour, she wanted a choice...at least for once in her life, she wanted to have a choice.

Had it been anyone else to whom she was mated, Neveah could still choose to severe the mate bond through rejection...but Alessio?

Did Neveah even dare face him or say the words of rejection when confronted with his cold, deadly gaze?

Neveah dashed through the woods at blinding speed, her boots digging into the damp sand, making it difficult to move at her desired pace.

Her clothing, soaked with the rain clung to her tightly and the chilling cold seeped right into her bones,

The woods were devoid of life, everyone was assembled back at the highest mountain range for the banquet and Neveah was glad for it... the last thing she needed at this moment was to meet anyone.

Neveah ran with all she had, ducking low hanging branches and leaping over fallen logs,

She twisted to the side, darting between the tightly packed trees,

Somehow, Neveah knew Alessio would give chase, she had disobeyed his direct order and if there was one thing about Alessio, he had always demanded utter submission from Neveah.

This was not the first time Neveah had found herself running desperately to escape the terror that was Prince Alessio.

But this time was different, this time...he did not chase her because she had done something wrong,

He chased her because the Creator had deemed it fitting to forge a sacrilegious mate bond between them... tying the strings of their souls together, to what end?!

Neveah was not certain for how long she had been running, she only knew she could not stop... she needed to get away,

From Alessio, from everything...but could one truly run from their own fate?

Neveah had been born unlucky, she had always known it, yet she had hoped that at least just this once, the Creator would show her his mercy.

’Did I ask for too much? Did I seek a favor so great you could not grant it?!’ Neveah thought in devastation, her heart throbbing painfully.

’But even so, how can you punish me so?!’ Neveah thought,

Alessio was her brother! He was her tormentor! Her worst nightmare! How could he be her mate? Just how was it possible?

Even fate could not be this cruel, even the Creator could not be so unfeeling...yet to whom could Neveah plead her cause? From whom could she seek help?

When it seemed the universe itself stood against her, where exactly could Neveah find salvation?

Neveah did not get enough time to think of it as the very next moment, the breath left her lungs as she was tackled down to the ground.

Her clothing was completely soaked and the damp earth only made it even worse, yet Neveah knew her soaked clothing was the least of her concerns at this moment.

"No! Let go!" Neveah screamed, she did not need to see to know who it was,

The electrifying sparks spreading all across her skin wherever they had contact already made it obvious.

"Mine!" Alessio snarled furiously as he turned Neveah so she stared straight up into his eyes.

"No... no! You can’t possibly be okay with this! You’re my brother!" Neveah screamed, struggling against Alessio’s hold.

"You cannot escape me Omega... submit!" Alessio growled out as he restrained Neveah’s arms above her head.

"Alessio...no! You’re letting your wolf control you! Stop!" Neveah screamed for Alessio to come to his senses as he grazed his cheek against hers.

Alessio detested her, Neveah was certain of it. He should be rejecting her but why did he seem pleased instead?

Alessio’s next words confirmed Neveah’s thoughts and horrified her at the very same time.

"You have no idea... for how long I have desired you Omega. Who would think, that you were mine all along?" Alessio murmured in a deep, guttural tone.

"I will claim you, right here...over and over again till you forget every other man you have ever been with." Alessio vowed, his eyes dark and a cold chill of terror ran down Neveah’s spine.

Neveah understood Alessio’s meaning, he accepted the mate bond and he was going to force it on her as well.

Neveah felt her throat clog up with devastation and despair as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Fate was unfair, this was a fact that could never be changed.

There were people born to a life of misery and agony, for people like this...they were not allowed to ask for more, they were not allowed to dream of more.

For people like this, no matter how far out of the pit they crawled, they would only end up pulled right back down to where they had begun.

For people like this, the lot they had been born with was their inevitable fate.

And as Neveah lay there in the woods, beneath Alessio, the sound of her robes being ruthlessly ripped off of her... Neveah understood she was one of those people.

’I should never have hoped... I should never have dreamed... this is my inevitable fate.’ Neveah thought, her eyes fluttering closed, silent tears dripping out her cheeks.

"Veah!" Neveah heard her wolf snarl in her mind and it was only then Neveah realized she was not some weak omega that could be trampled over.

Neveah had taken enough, she was done putting her head down and letting herself be stepped over.

She had been born with a power she had no rights to...yet it was hers! And for just this once, Neveah would use it!

"Get.off.me!" Neveah snarled ferociously, her wolf rising to the surface as she tossed Alessio off of her with ease.

Alessio was tossed back a far distance where he crashed into a tree.

He released a pained groan as his back slammed against the tree and Neveah jumped to her feet, her eyes narrowed in a fierce glare.

Neveah expected to see a shocked Alessio but instead, Alessio rose up to his feet, a complicated look in his eyes.

Neveah’s heart sank as she realized there was no surprise from Alessio at her sudden display of strength, which could only mean one thing...

"You already knew..." Neveah murmured in horror, taking a shaky step back from Alessio as she realized she had just made the greatest mistake of her life.

By standing up for herself...by saving herself, she had just revealed a fact she knew Alessio Terran Lothaire detested the most...a threat to his rightful succession of the Eclipse throne.

Neveah did not need further confirmation, she could understand it now.

Upon realizing Neveah was his mate, Alessio had seen an opportunity, an opportunity with which he could force Neveah to reveal a secret she had so carefully guarded for seventeen years.

"Did you think you could play me like a fool forever, Omega?" Alessio asked in a dark tone, his eyes glowing to show his wolf was right on the surface.

"I have waited and waited to have you as mine for the longest time, I was going to give you the world! But you just had to take from me what should never be yours!" Alessio snarled furiously,

"I... I...how?" Neveah stuttered out, taking another step back as Alessio advanced closer to her.

"Your Governess came to me before I departed for Mount Vernon... and she told me what she had seen on that night. The Alpha King wolf who battled the black dragon." Alessio murmured.

Neveah’s heart sank, terror gripping her immediately as she noted how Alessio’s aura had taken a turn into something sinister.

"Alessio I... I did not intend for things to be like this! I didn’t want this! I didn’t want any of it!" Neveah exclaimed as tears flowed freely down her cheeks.

"Never forget Veah...you broke my trust first, you betrayed me first!" Alessio snarled as he took another step closer to Neveah.

"Please don’t say anything to father Alessio... I will leave, I will leave now and I will never come back."

"You will never have to see me again, I swear it." Neveah promised, her heart overwhelmed with horror at the thought of her father discovering this.

"Then leave... now... for good..." Alessio replied in a dark tone.

Neveah’s eyes widened slightly, unable to believe Alessio had actually let her go so easily,

Suspicious as it was, Neveah nodded immediately, turning around...

Had she known better, Neveah never would have turned her back to Alessio.

For in the next moment, a scream tore out of her throat as pain unlike anything she had ever felt before exploded across her back.

And as Neveah collapsed to the damp earth, the last thing she felt was the warmth of her own blood soaking her clothing.
