Chapter 186: The Lost Isle (Ch.186)

The words of the strange man echoed in Estelle’s mind as she reached for the box and took it out.

Staring down at the box, Estelle did not doubt this was it. Just as the strange man had said, there was a golden scale drawn over the lid.

Yet again, the accuracy of the strange man’s words and the depth of his knowledge on topics he should not have known anything of greatly bothered Estelle.

"How could he know exactly how this box would look? Even I know nothing of it." Estelle murmured to herself uneasily before she glanced up.

Estelle’s eyes met her mother’s plaque and for a moment, she froze up in place and just stared at it, guilt churning within her.

Somehow, it felt to Estelle like her mother stared right back at her, eyes narrowed in disapproval as it always would be when Estelle was being naughty.

"It is just a treasure... father can spare thousands of it, if need be. I will compensate to him somehow." Estelle stuttered out, grasping at strands to defend her reasoning.

Estelle got up to her feet and was just about to head out but she paused in her step, passing another glance over to her mother’s plaque.

Estelle was unable to get rid of the guilt in her heart and so she held tightly unto the box, tears springing up to her eyes.

"What do you want me to do, mother?" Estelle croaked out in a trembling tone.

This box and whatever it contained was the answer to all of Estelle’s troubles, she just had to hand it over to the strange man and he would give her what she so desperately wanted.

Yet at this moment, a thought came to Estelle’s mind.

’I can keep my end of the bargain, but would he truly keep his?’ Estelle pondered to herself.

The sudden realization that she had been so blinded by her own greed that she did not even stop for a moment to consider if the strange man was truly trust worthy,

This realization gave Estelle pause, she knew nothing of the strange man, or of what treasure was contained within this box and if truly it was dispensable.

How could she just hand it over with no assurance whatsoever that the strange man would uphold his end of the bargain? How did she even know for certain that his words were true?

It felt to Estelle that the presence of her mother’s plaque had knocked sense into her...of course, it did not dampen her desire for a change in her reality.

But it did stir doubts, doubts that Estelle needed a confirmation for before she proceeded on such a dark path.

"If I must sacrifice everything, I must make certain I do not place my family at risk... whatever it is, I am the Lady of Fort Blazed." Estelle murmured to herself.

Estelle headed over to her father’s book shelves, still holding the box tightly in her grasp.

She moved from one shelf to the other, searching through the volumes for what she needed.

The one thing Estelle knew of dragons was the fact that they always kept a record of every event in history, documented to serve as guidance to future generations.

"There has to be something about the isle of Kezrar Dún in the volumes of Fort Kezrar Dún." Estelle murmured to herself and finally, her eyes settled on the volume she searched for.

"Records of the twelve great fortresses of the Asvarian stronghold and their territories." Estelle murmured to herself as she pulled out the volume and moved over to her father’s desk.

Estelle pulled it open, leaning away from the cloud of dust for a moment before she quickly flipped through it.

Estelle was certain if she knew something... anything about the isle of Kezrar Dún, she could understand just what level of danger her intentions could result to.

"Fort Kezrar Dún, the sixth of the twelve great fortresses..." Estelle murmured to herself from the basic knowledge she knew of Kezrar Dún.

Estelle flipped through the records of the fortresses till she arrived at the sixth, where the words ’Fort Kezrar Dún of the Southern mountains’ was written in bold letterings.

Wasting no time, Estelle began reading through it.

"Fort Kezrar Dún, governed by Dragon Lord Makenra and his lord rider, Fenrich since the great war..."

"It is one of the largest territories of the Asvarian stronghold and boasts of a vast territory that stretches from the snow ridge...to the lost isle..." Estelle read aloud.

"The lost isle?" Estelle asked in bafflement, she had never paid much attention to the history and territories of the Asvarian stronghold, Estelle had always preferred combat lessons.

Estelle quickly turned over to the map, moving her finger across it, she traced the territories till she arrived at a patch of black that was tagged the lost isle.

Estelle flipped forward to read more of this lost isle.

"The lost isle... A large terrain of Kezrar Dún that disappeared after the overthrow of the previous dragon king, leaving nothing but a vast sea in it’s place."

"A magical phenomenon yet to be comprehended. The lost isle was once called the Isle of Kezrar Dún and was home to the Signe Tribe (loyalist sorcerers) of the previous dynasty, ruled by the great sorcerer who died in battle...Azkar." Estelle read aloud, her eyes wide with horror. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"In recent days, the surving Signe sorcerers and disciples of Azkar have founded an organization with the sole mission of overturning the new dynasty and stirring chaos across the lands, they take on the name of ’The Black Network’." Estelle finished, her hands trembling.

Perhaps she did not recognize the words ’Signe tribe’ or ’loyalist sorcerers’, but she did recognize the name ’Black Network.’

What was stirred within her was a mix of rage and horror as she stared back at her mother’s plaque, upon which were engraved the words:

’Lady Rider Ellen of Fort Blazed, hence takes her last flight, guided to the afterlife by the shadow dragon.’

’Honored rider, beloved wife and mother, fallen to the hands of black magic...may generations never forget this blood feud with the Black Network...so declares the King.’
