Chapter 181: Severing (Ch.181)

Estelle heaved a quiet sigh, glancing up from the canvas where she absentmindedly painted a scenery with a mesh of various colors.

Having nothing else to do, she had taken out her easel and paint brushes to keep herself occupied, however it was hard to focus on painting when she felt so excited.

"The day could not move any slower." Estelle lamented, displeased to find that the sun still made its descent.

Estelle had to wonder if the days were always so long, or perhaps it was just her being too anxious.

She had long finished with her lessons for the day, left to Estelle alone, she would not sit around here and wait while such a special day was so quickly spent,

But Estelle k Jason would need to be granted leave from the stables before he could retire to his quarters.

"He is much too diligent, I should speak to father of the tedious duties assigned to the stable hands." Estelle noted to herself.

"There are enough hands around the castle and horses are hardly in use, would there be a need for such extensive working hours?" Estelle murmured as she returned her attention to the painting.

Just as Estelle continued her work on the canvas before her, her door came open and in stepped Lord Starron of Fort Blazed.

"Father!" Estelle exclaimed in surprise, jumping to her feet and knocking over the easel along with the painting she was working on.

Lord Starron curled a brow at his daughter’s startled reaction, crossing his arms over his chest as his eyes narrowed suspiciously.

"Have I interrupted something?" Lord Starron asked.

"No father...not at all." Estelle replied quickly.

Realizing her reaction had been much too extreme, a nervous chuckle escaped Estelle as she lowered her head to avoid her father’s gaze.

"Hmmm..." Lord Starron hummed quietly, keeping his suspicious gaze fixed on Estelle for a moment longer before he strode over to her.

"Perhaps I should have knocked first, you are a lightblood yet you are so easily startled." Lord Starron teased, chuckling quietly, as he picked up Estelle’s painting and inspected it.

Estelle heaved an inaudible sigh of relief when her father brushed aside her reaction and she quickly leaned down to pick up the scattered paint brushes and placed them aside.

"Do not make fun of me father. I was not expecting you until dawn, the flight patrol only returns at dawn." Estelle grumbled beneath her breath.

"One would think my own daughter would rather have me away than in close reach." Lord Starron pointed out in an exaggerated pained tone.

Estelle rolled her eyes at her father’s words, though a sense of guilt blossomed in her heart at just how accurate her father’s words were.

It had taken so much effort on Estelle’s part to ensure her father would be away on flight patrol precisely on this day,

But now that Lord Starron had returned unannounced, Estelle knew she would have to let go of every hopes she held for the day.

"I returned ahead of the flight patrol, our Blazed Castle is expecting an important guest and we must make preparations ahead of time." Lord Starron revealed.

Estelle perked up at the mention of a guest.

Estelle knew best just how unwelcoming her father was to unfamiliar presence in his castle,

It was why a castle as large as the Blazed Castle situated in a bustling city like Fort Blazed rarely had any guests visiting.

It had been this way since Estelle’s mother had passed.

For Lord Starron to entertain a guest, Estelle knew it would have to be someone of a special status or the reason for the visit was important enough to her father.

"A guest? Who is it?" Estelle asked curiously.

"A guest whom we must welcome with a grand banquet. Now, I know nothing about organizing a banquet and so I can only come to seek your help." Lord Starron explained.

Estelle was even more curious now, her father had not hosted a banquet in such a long time, who could be so important that her father was willing to host a banquet for?

"Seriously father, who is it? Who is this guest? Could it be a Lord of a fortress? Or perhaps someone from Keep Skies?" Estelle asked curiously.

"The young lord of Fort Scabbard." Lord Starron replied with a shrug.

"Dante?!" Estelle exclaimed in pleasant surprise.

"Ah...so you do remember him." Lord Starron affirmed with a nod.

"Mother taught him all about lordship for years on his father’s request, of course I remember him." Estelle laughed out.

"But Dante has not visited castle blazed in almost a decade, not since he began aiding his father with ruling Fort Scabbard." Estelle recalled in a puzzled tone.

"Why would he decide to visit so suddenly and on such short notice?" Estelle asked with a raised brow.

Lord Starron was quiet for a moment before he sighed heavily.

"The young lad endured a severing a month ago." Lord Starron revealed in a grim tone.

Estelle gasped in horror at the mention of a severing.

A severing was one of the most devastating things that could ever happen to a dragon lord.

It was the name given to the destruction of a mate bond before the dragon and rider could even have a first meeting.

A severing happened when a dragon’s fated rider passed on before they discovered one another, hence their fated bond was cut off even before it could be fully formed.

For dragon lords, the bond to their fated rider was a significant part of their existence, hence a severing was excruciatingly painful and there had been occasions were lord dragons did not survive it.

Lord Starron shook his head slightly, heaving another sigh.

"Dante is in a bad state, Elle. His father seeks our help." Lord Starron revealed.

"Our help? Certainly! What can we do?" Estelle asked without hesitation.

Dante was one Estelle considered a dear friend and a brother even, if it was within her power, Estelle would definitely help him through this dark time.

Lord Starron stared at Estelle in silence for a moment before he spoke.

"A new bond to replace that which was broken...Elle, Dante seeks your hand in marriage and your bond as his rider." Lord Starron revealed.
