Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 172: Currents ()
"Veahhh!!!" Menarx’s heart ran cold as Neveah fell off the edge of the cliff.
Menarx moved immediately, dashing towards the edge of the cliff, he leaped off after Neveah.
If he was fast enough, Menarx knew he could catch Neveah in time, if only he could sight her.
The wind surged all around him as he shot down at blinding speed, searching around wildly.
The fog obstructed his view, Neveah had already disappeared through it and Menarx could not see her form.
’How had she disappeared so quickly?’
It had been only a moment, Menarx just could not understand it.
Menarx’s heart sank, his ears could pick up the sound of the crashing waves coming up close but his mind was set on finding Neveah and he did not take note of it.
His eyes scanned the fog, with his vision, there should have been at least the slightest glimpse of her... anything at all, but there was nothing.
Just as he broke through the fog, Menarx’s fall was broken when large claws wrapped around him, catching him just before he could crash into the water.
Menarx had not noticed he was so close to the currents already, he had missed the right moment to shift and would have been swallowed up by the currents.
"My Liege." Menarx knew who exactly had caught him.
"You fool! You could have saved her if you shifted! Are you seeking death?!" Jian roared at Menarx through their link as he tossed him to the shore a good distance away.
Guilt and terror gripped Menarx, he gave chase in only a split second but he had missed Neveah and she had fallen into the currents.
The currents beneath the cliff were known to be extremely violent, deadly even to dragon shifters.
What was even worse was the currents poured out into a waterfall not far ahead.
They could not navigate the currents in human form without being caught in it, the river was too shallow for their massive dragon forms, the only option was to soar above it.
"We have to find her before she goes down the waterfall!" Menarx thought to King Jian in desperation.
"How troublesome!" King Jian thought back furiously.
"Shift and trail the currents!" King Jian hissed as he shot off ahead in a flash of golden scales, his wings cutting through the air.
Cold as he was, a sense of urgency and the sliver of panic settled in King Jian’s heart.
Neveah had let herself fall, it had happened so suddenly, King Jian had been caught off guard.
What exactly had he said that was so terrible she had chosen to jump off the cliff?
If only he had been fast enough... but that moment wasted was enough to put everything in dire straits.
He could not begin to imagine how he would explain this to Xenon, he could only hope they got to Neveah in time.
Menarx wasted no time, leaping up, his shift took over and he shot after King Jian.
______________
Menarx’s voice calling to her still rang in Neveah’s ears even as her eyes went closed, she could picture the horrified look on his face as he watched her fall to her death.
Still, Neveah was glad, of the people that watched her end... at least Xenon was not one of them.
At least she would not be a cause of heartache to the black dragon who was already so broken.
The fall seemed to go on forever and just when Neveah thought it would never end, she soon felt her forceful descent break as she crashed into the river below her. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Neveah gasped for breath as the waves carried her, tossing her in several directions.
The crashing waves she had heard from up above were even more violent now that she was engulfed in it’s embrace,
The waters were chilling cold, moreso than anything Neveah had ever felt and they seeped into her bones, and somehow into her heart too.
Nothing could have prepared her for that chill, not even dying once.
Even so, Neveah neither had the strength nor the will to fight the currents and so she just let the waves carry her.
The force of the water as it moved downstream was formidable.
The torrents tossed her this way and that but there was nothing she could do about it.
Neveah choked on the water as she was pulled under and reemerged multiple times, the waves letting her up and then taking her down at it’s own will.
Neveah did not struggle to stay afloat and she gave up control of the situation,
The rushing waves crashed all around her and the rocks along the path tore mercilessly into her skin, drawing out blood.
The waves seemed to have a mind of their own as they tossed her in all directions, even if one wanted to save her at this point, the waves were too fast and too strong.
Water got into her nostrils, burning through her lungs as she was finally pulled under the waves.
Neveah soon found herself sinking into the depths of the river once again and this time for good,
Her muscles were already weakened, there was no more fight left in her. The peaceful depths was a striking contrast to the dreadfulness of the surface.
Her arms felt heavy, her chest ached at her lungs were burned.
Neveah felt that familiar chilling cold feeling gripping her muscles as her consciousness was tugged out.
’This was it... this was what death felt like...’ Neveah recalled as she had felt this very same way once before.
Neveah could not ponder over it for too long though.
The currents soon tossed her against a rock and her head made hard contact as she lost consciousness, welcoming the darkness with open arms.
Neveah’s lifeless form travelled along with the flow of the water as it moved further and further away from the location where there were those who desperately searched for her.
