Chapter 168: My Wish Is... (Ch.168)

When the rush of magic faded, Neveah’s eyes fluttered open to find herself back at the cliff’s edge.

She was standing precariously close to the edge, just a mere few steps away from it and any sudden movement would send her tumbling off it’s edge.

Now that Neveah thought of it, the cliff seemed like a better option than facing the emotional torture she had faced within that spell.

A reminder of everything she so desperately wished to forget and such a cruel reminder too, digging deep into the wounds in her heart that had never healed.

Of everyone in Dragon Keep, Neveah was still the one who faced such a spell... Neveah was not even surprised at it.

’The creator has never shown me his mercy... what could I hope for?’ Neveah thought to herself with a shake of her head.

"Veah!" Menarx called out to Neveah and she glanced up to find Menarx, King Jian and the strange man who had spoken up for her at the council.

They had just emerged from the forest and Neveah lifted a hand to stop them from coming any closer while she struggled to catch her breath.

The memories triggered by the spell still overwhelmed Neveah’s mind and the mate bond pulsed fiercely within her.

"Veah...are you alright?" Menarx asked as he slowed down.

"Don’t... don’t come any closer..." Neveah stuttered out in a shaky tone as her hand rested over her erratically beating heart.

Neveah panted audibly, there was a searing pain resonating from the mate bond and spreading all around her.

A pain that reminded her that her reality had never changed, she had only brushed it aside and lived in denial.

Deep within the darkest corners of her mind where Neveah kept it hidden, the mate bond only grew stronger and more overpowering with the passing of time.

All along, Neveah believed time would solve everything. So long as she was alive, everything would fall into place.

Neveah had thought as long as she protected her life, there would come a day when she eventually would be free from the shackles of her past and this cursed bond.

A day when they would completely fade away.

But all of this had been her wishful thinking, nothing had changed...she was thousands of miles from the Eclipse Domain, halfway across the world and still nothing had changed.

’The very same way my reality here in Dragon Keep is no different from the Eclipse Domain... I had thought the days to fight for my life at every turn were over, but I was terribly wrong...’ Neveah thought to herself.

A mirthless chuckle escaped her as she realized it, all this while, Neveah brushed away the truth.

She brushed it away because there was at least one good thing Dragon Keep had given her,

People like Menarx and Lord Everon who believed in her, trusted her and wanted to protect her even when they had no reason to...

People like Xenon who made a world that was so strange and unfamiliar a little bearable...a world that was so cold, a little warm.

But in truth, Neveah had not been honest enough with herself. Even with these people, it still wasn’t enough...

It wasn’t enough to accept a life in Dragon Keep, a life of an outsider, forever under suspicion and endangered.

’This will never change...will I always have to battle for my life like this?’ Neveah thought to herself as the final warning left by the fairy rang through her mind.

Back in the Eclipse Domain, it had seemed the whole world was against her,

And even here in Dragon Keep, Neveah still felt the same way. What was more familiar was this feeling of helplessness...

This feeling of injustice, a feeling that came with the knowledge that she had done nothing to deserve any of this.

"Veah?" Menarx called uncertainly, taking a cautious step closer to her, his expression deeply concerned.

Neveah’s hands clenched into fists as she took a step back away from them, alarming the three dragons.

"Scales! Veah don’t move!" Menarx exclaimed in panic, realizing just how close to the cliff’s edge Neveah was.

"I said...do not come any closer..." Neveah warned in a dark tone.

"Okay... okay, I won’t move an inch. Just tell me what is going on..." Menarx reasoned, lifting his hands to show he meant Neveah no harm.

Neveah spared Menarx a glance, she already knew it, she already knew Menarx would never harm her. But his world... the world of the dragons was a different story.

"Your world is everything I never wanted to be a part of." Neveah began in a shaky tone.

"Your world is vicious and evil...it will swallow me up." Neveah continued as her gaze turned to settle on the dragon king who had been quiet all along.

"Neveah, come over here." King Jian ordered directly, his gaze narrowed as he watched Neveah’s proximity to the cliff’s edge.

"You actually think... you can order me around..." Neveah said, chuckling quietly as she tilted her head back and blinked back the tears gathered in her eyes.

Neveah’s emotions were already out of her own control, she had barely contained them long enough to get through the spell but now, that thin strand of control she desperately held unto had already snapped.

"Veah, I don’t know what you saw in that illusion, but believe me none of it was real. I am here now... I will keep you safe so please, just step away from that cliff." Menarx pleaded, his tone anxious.

"Keep me safe?..." Neveah scoffed beneath her breath as she felt the dull ache around her throat where Xenon had nearly crushed her windpipe.

Neveah did not blame him, she understood his position. But that encounter with Xenon had let Neveah understand a reality she ignored all this while.

"All the danger I have met here was because of you all..."

"In this Asvarian stronghold, the greatest danger to me...is you dragons." Neveah replied.

The words were bitter on her tongue, but it was a truth Neveah needed to accept.

Neveah’s words left Menarx in silence, as his expression converted to one of guilt.

None of the dragons could refute Neveah’s words, all that Neveah faced was not for her own sins but she was just caught in the crossfire.

Between the dragons and an enemy Neveah did not even know.

’If fate is out to get us, then I will try it’s limit...if it seeks our life, I will give it a final chance...’ Neveah thought to her wolf.

’We are of the same mind.’ Neveah’s wolf thought back to her, granting her consent to what Neveah intended.

"Your Grace, the revered Dragon King..." Neveah began,

"You made me a promise that you would grant me a wish, whatever I ask for."

King Jian’s brows furrowed slightly at Neveah’s words.

"My wish is..."
