Chapter 154: Waiting (Ch.154)

The sun had just set beneath the horizon when Neveah stepped out to the balcony of Lord Imagor’s quarters, heaving out a deep breath she did not realize she was holding.

Neveah headed over to the rail, glancing down below, she could hardly see anything since they were so high up but the feel of the cold breeze brushing over her skin eased her in ways nothing else would.

Neveah stared down at her hands and she realized they were trembling, her chest felt stuffy and tight, all the pressure and anxiety she had been forced to in these past days had taken their toll.

The sight of her trembling hands bothered Neveah and she clenched them up into a tight fist to still the tremors.

Not even when Neveah was back in the Eclipse Palace did she feel so shaken by anything,

Neveah’s life was always at risk, there was nothing new about it. But this time, Neveah had truly let it get to her and she could not even tell why.

Perhaps it was the burden of shouldering the lives of both mother and child and not just her own life alone,

Of knowing that her death would be directly linked to the death of another, of not just one but two...

"To think you still have the luxury to worry about others?" Neveah murmured to herself with a shake of her head.

This was to be the second time Neveah had watched a childbirth, despite her own situation, Neveah was deeply relieved.

"You have done well." Menarx’s voice broke through Neveah’s thoughts and Neveah glanced over her shoulder at him.

"Lord Everon says it will be fine?" Neveah asked slowly, she had not waited to hear Lord Everon’s diagnosis before she rushed out to get some air.

"The foetus will hatch in his own time, but he lives...as does Kalia." Menarx relayed.

Neveah nodded slowly, she already knew both mother and child would be fine, but it was still reassuring to hear it said by another.

"You will be safe now, you should return to your quarters and get some rest." Menarx said to Neveah.

"Safe..." Neveah murmured, the word felt foreign on her tongue.

"I will escort you to your quarters." Menarx offered.

Neveah shook her head slightly as she stepped away from the rail. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"I know my way back... I will go myself." Neveah declined as she walked past Menarx and headed into Lord Imagor’s quarters.

King Jian and the rest of the King’s guard were still present, they had come in after Lady Kaliana’s successful delivery.

They were engaged in a conversation with Lord Everon and barely took notice of Neveah’s presence,

It worked just fine for Neveah who made her way out without any interruption.

The fact that no one attempted to stop her was good enough for Neveah, for the past few days, she was not allowed to move around the keep by herself.

Neveah’s mind was occupied with thoughts and she did not pay much attention when she stepped into the ascending room,

It was only when it came to a halt that Neveah realized she was not at the fourth level but had gone all the way down to the ground level.

Neveah heaved a sigh, she guessed she was not yet ready to return to a routine life, stepping out of the ascending room, she glanced around the ground level for a moment,

She was not even surprised to see the bustling atmosphere as the attendants moved about, chatting excitedly.

News of Lady Kaliana’s birth had already spread, it was worth celebrating and there was a rare festive mood that was so different from the usual somber atmosphere in the keep.

Of course, Neveah’s presence drew a lot of attention. As she walked across the hall, many eyes trailed her as they always did.

Neveah wondered if it was such a shock that she was walking free a few days after being humiliated before these very same eyes in silver chains.

She guessed her survival would come as a disappointment to many, it had seemed to be quite the fun fare when Neveah was doomed to death.

It was a little past sunset now, since she was already in the courtyard, Neveah just kept walking, letting her feet guide her down the only path through the keep she was familiar with.

Soon, Neveah arrived at the rickety bridge and she glanced up at the cave opening.

Since Neveah woke up in the dragon king’s quarters, she had not set eyes on Xenon and Neveah wondered what he was up to.

Whatever it was, Neveah wanted to share the good news with Xenon herself... she wanted him to know his nephew was well and Neveah herself would be fine too.

At the end of the bridge where she always stood, Neveah waited.

Whenever Neveah came out here, Xenon would always be standing across the bridge, awaiting her arrival.

For every single day since she first became his attendant, be it at dawn, noon or twilight, Neveah would find him here whenever she came out.

Today, Xenon was nowhere to be seen. Neveah guessed she had come unexpectedly, she was willing to do the waiting this time.

But a short time passed and there were no signs of movement from the cave, Xenon also did not show up and Neveah’s brows furrowed slightly.

’Do you think something happened while we slept?’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her.

"I do not know. Perhaps he is not expecting us yet, so he does not know we are here." Neveah thought back to her wolf.

Neveah then glanced down at the bridge uncertainly, it was a different assurance that came with Xenon waiting on the other side...but when Neveah had to make the crossing on her own, it stirred unease within her.

"Well, we’re already here." Neveah murmured to herself, she sucked in a deep breath and forcing one feet to move ahead of the other, she walked across the bridge.
