Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 147: Man in Black()
’Where is it?’ Neveah thought to herself as she ventured deeper into the mountain,
The forest had grown more dense all around her and the path itself had gotten narrow,
Neveah could see this mountain was not frequented despite it’s proximity to the human settlement, it’s steep paths were not favorable to venture through.
It had been a short time since Neveah left Menarx to find the herb on her own,
With each suspicious sound heard, Neveah was torn between relief and wariness.
On one hand, Neveah expected to see Menarx pop out at any moment... she wanted to believe he would be victorious and come find her before she made her way back to him.
With each passing moment that Neveah recalled the horrifying look of that creature, she could not help the concern that surfaced.
The longer it took to find the herb and there was still no sight of Menarx, Neveah wondered if something had gone wrong.
"What if he is in danger? Perhaps we should not have left him?" Neveah thought to her wolf uncertainly.
"He is a dragon Veah and clearly a powerful one. As much as I loathe to admit this, there is not much our presence can do for him." Neveah’s wolf thought back to her.
Neveah could not argue with her wolf’s words, between her and Menarx, Menarx stood a more greater chance of defeating the conjured beast.
"Are you truly worried for his fate? It is of no consequence to us if he dies..." Neveah’s wolf pointed out.
Neveah pursed her lips, her brows furrowing slightly.
Although she was not fond of the dragons and Neveah did not believe she ever would be, that did not mean she wished death for them.
All Neveah wanted was her own freedom, she did not need any lives lost in the process...at least not until there were no other options left.
"Menarx has not been as awful to us as half the people we have known in our lifetime. Be grateful for little things, remember?" Neveah thought back to her wolf.
"You have saved his life once, we do not owe him gratitude." Neveah’s wolf replied with a scoff.
"It took a lot of trouble to save him, I nearly lost my own life in the process. It would be such a waste if he died now." Neveah reasoned.
"Furthermore, Menarx is Xenon’s brother...it would break Xenon, if anything happened to him." Neveah admitted to her thoughts with a quiet sigh.
"And if Xenon is broken... what would it mean to you?" Neveah’s wolf asked again.
What did it mean to her? The question Neveah’s wolf posed struck Neveah and she was rendered speechless.
For whatever reason, Neveah had observed recently that she unconsciously took Xenon into consideration.
’He called us his responsibility, why does it feel to me that it is the other way around instead?’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her again.
Perhaps her wolf was right, perhaps Neveah to an extent considered Xenon her responsibility.
It could have been because Neveah knew her presence here was for Xenon’s cause in the first place,
Or Neveah may have grown much too accustomed to the gloomy black dragon in this short time.
Neveah was not certain what response to give, she did not wish to ponder over it either and so she did not respond.
"Just help me find it, would you?" Neveah thought to her wolf with an exasperated sigh.
There was just a day given to Neveah and Menarx to find the Ubrith flower and return to the keep.
Neveah soon arrived at a small lake, Neveah intentionally followed the sound of water since she knew the Ubrith flower mostly bloomed in moist places.
Neveah scoured the sides of the lake and the patches of greenery around it till she spotted what she was in search of.
"Thankfully, it is not so rare of a flower... otherwise, it would have been trouble." Neveah murmured, sighing in relief as she hurried over to it.
The Ubrith flower was a wildflower, a weed that grew all by itself in whatever terrain suited it’s growth without being cultivated.
It littered the forest surrounding the Eclipse Palace and was a regular sight in the Eclipse domain, hardly anyone knew of just what effect the root of this wildflower had.
Sometimes, Neveah wondered how the Alpha Queen came to know all she did of poisonous herbs, to have even figured out the potency of the root of a wildflower.
Neveah shook her head quickly at the thought of her step mother, life in the Eclipse Palace was the last thing Neveah wanted to think of at the moment.
Neveah carefully harvested the flower and stored it away in her satchel before got up to her feet.
Neveah began making her way back the way she had come, it was a reasonable distance but if she walked briskly, she would arrive back with Menarx in no time.
Neveah could only trust that it would be safe to return there since she herself did not know of a way out of the forest other than the path Menarx brought her through.
As Neveah moved down the path, she suddenly paused in her step, her brows furrowing slightly.
"Who’s there?" Neveah asked, her ears twitching slightly.
"You are quite sensitive... for a little girl..." A deep voice said in response from somewhere above.
Neveah glanced up to find a lone figure seated on a branch high above her, he was clothed in pitch black robes with a mask covering his visage.
"I should have known..." Neveah murmured to herself as she lowered her gaze and secured her satchel tighter around her waist.
Life never came easy for Neveah, she already knew this. There was never a time when her life was not endangered, it was just how things had always been for her.
And so Neveah was unfazed when another of the hideous beasts emerged from the forest, it’s beady eyes reflecting it’s blood thirst.
