Chapter 136: Who Do You Hate? (Ch.136)

"What is this Xenon? You shield her from me? Is this an act of aggression?" King Jian asked in a low tone.

Xenon’s eyes glowed and his upper body rose slightly as he towered above King Jian’s human form and glared down at him.

"Agg...ression? You are yet to see it." Xenon thought to King Jian through their mind.

Xenon’s tone was cold and biting, he made no attempts to hide his wrath and King Jian was momentarily taken aback to be on the receiving end of such cold treatment.

"What is she... Xenon?! How deep does this run?!" King Jian hissed furiously, his hands clenching into fists.

"She is mine! And you are testing me... Jian. I held back once...my patience is running out..." Xenon thought back to Jian.

King Jian’s brows twitched at Xenon’s declaration.

"You let her ride you with no hesitation... right from the start, your intent was to bond her?..." King Jian asked in a low tone.

"She is my salvation... I am not unwilling..." Xenon thought, his amber orbs gleaming.

"I do not allow it...I can allow you everything else, any other rider but her!" King Jian raged.

A low growl slipped out of Xenon as his gaze narrowed slightly.

"The decision...is mine." Xenon clarified.

King Jian felt rage surge within him, it had been so long he could have a conversation with a sober Xenon,

King Jian could not believe Xenon would confront him in this manner.

"You have raised your sword on me once before... for a woman. Do you intend to do it again?" King Jian asked in a chilling cold tone.

The moment the words were out of Jian’s lips, he regretted them instantly as he took notice of the hurt that flashed through Xenon’s eyes.

"Xenon, I should not have said that..." King Jian began to apologize but Xenon cut him off.

"The one you hate...is it the little wolf...or me?" Xenon thought.

The carriage that departed the Dragon Keep a night before rolled to a stop at the forest line of a vast forest.

It had not gone too far from the keep mountain, but the descent was ardous and had taken quite sometime.

As the carriage stopped, Adrienne alighted the carriage and glanced around for a moment before she pulled off the hood of her cloak.

"Are you certain we have not been followed?" Adrienne asked the carriage driver who nodded in response.

"My Lady, hurry to your business so you may return on time, before anyone notices you have left." The carriage driver replied.

Adrienne headed over to the forest and without hesitation, she ventured in.

She walked briskly down a worn path, with the pace of her movement, she was clearly familiar with this path and so it was not long before she arrived at a cave.

Adrienne headed into the cave, going deeper to the innermost cavern where a small pool could be seen.

Moving to the edge of the pool, Adrienne again glanced around before she stepped into it, completely submerging herself in the pool.

There was a gleam of magic shinning all across the pool and as Adrienne’s eyes fluttered open, she found herself standing at the edge of another lake, completely different from the pool at the cave.

Beside the lake, a beautiful woman stood, slowly dropping fish food into the water.

Her hair was a gleaming shade of copper and it cascaded down her back with some part of it held up and flowers braided into it.

She was dressed in a floor length dress of a light blue shade, the rim of her dress splayed out all around her and there was a pair of spectral wings fluttering ever so slightly behind her.

"The magic interference in Dragon Keep is difficult to overcome. Forgive my failure to come to find you sooner, aunt." Adrienne apologized to the strange woman.

"You have come now. This is only an illusion portal and you shall have to return to your body soon. Since you have come to see me, I assume you have something to report." The woman replied with a casual shrug.

"It has been a few years since I sent you to join your sister in Dragon Keep. In this time, you have gotten to know the dragon lords from a distance."

"Tell me, have you set your heart to a dragon lord?" The woman asked, her attention still focused on spreading the fish food.

"I have." Adrienne replied in a low tone.

"Who is it?" The woman asked.

"I..." Adrienne began but trailed off.

"You have always been an ambitious one, I do not doubt you have chosen well. You need not reveal your thoughts. Now, why have you come to me?" The woman asked Adrienne.

Adrienne stepped forward and pulled out an item wrapped in a white cloth, handing it over to the woman.

The woman finally placed aside the bowl of fish food she held and regarded Adrienne for a moment before she took the white cloth and opened it to reveal a strange looking herb.

The gaze of the woman narrowed slightly and there was recognition in her eyes.

"Why are you with this?" The woman demanded in a low tone.

"Do not tell me you took this? With what intent? To harm a mere attendant?" The woman asked coldly.

"I just thought...if we can provide the cure for the Lady Kaliana, our clan will finally get a chance to gain the Dragon King’s favor." Adrienne explained.

"Gain his favor? Or incur his wrath?! Do you reckon they shall not realize this is the missing one?"

" It is a herb that grows only once a century... can we afford to put it forward as a cure we have found?" The woman asked Adrienne with a raised brow.

"I...I did not think that far..." Adrienne stuttered.

"That is your flaw...you do not think. You are ambitious but burden yourself with petty grudges and vengeance. If only you could be a little more like Keila, objective and purposeful." The woman chided, shaking her head in disappointment.

"This is a trouble you should not have stirred Adrienne. You had best seek a method to get this off your hands, our clan will have nothing to do with this plot of yours."

"And be mindful never to drag your sister’s hard won reputation through the mud." The woman warned as she handed the herb back to Adrienne.

"Forgive me." Adrienne apologized, lowering her head to a bow.

"Listen Adrienne, you are from a great and noble bloodline. You need not be entangled in trivial rivalry...if you wish to be rid of an attendant, you can surely think of less troublesome ways." The woman advised.

"If you hope to win the heart of the dragon king, you must learn to cherish what he cherishes and protect what he holds dear." The woman continued.

"How did you..." Adrienne asked in surprise.

"You are a child I have raised, Adrienne. What do you hope to conceal from me?" The woman asked with a raised brow.

"The greater your ambition, the greater the sacrifices you must make. The Lady Kaliana may be the first of such...but such sacrifices always have grave consequences." The woman said, shaking her head slightly.

"Return to the Keep, Adrienne. I trust you shall make the right decisions." The woman finished, waving her hand.

Adrienne was pulled backwards by an unseen force and plunged back into the water, and just like before, she soon found herself at the edge of the pool in the cavern.

What was more astonishing was the fact that Adrienne’s hair and clothing had not soaked up even a drop of water, both were completely dry.

Adrienne glanced down at the herb in her hand, her brows furrowing slightly.

"I refuse to believe I cannot get rid of a mere attendant." Adrienne murmured to herself as she headed out of the cave.

The carriage made it’s return trip to Dragon Keep and all the while, Adrienne seethed within, rage churning within her.

She had taken this trip out with so much hopes and now, she would have to give up this chance simply because her aunt was not daring enough.

___________

Adrienne stepped out of her carriage, glancing around before she dismissed the carriage driver and headed back into the keep.

Adrienne headed up to the fourth level, it was already late afternoon and so Adrienne did not encounter many people on the way.

She soon got to the fourth level where she stopped and inspected the hall to be certain there was no one around.

All the noble ladies on this level had left for their respective academies and Adrienne knew she would need to hurry to get to the healer’s hall.

But before that, just as her aunt had instructed, Adrienne needed to get the incriminating herb out of her hands.

Adrienne walked down the hall, walking past the door to her room, she arrived at the room some distance after hers.
