Chapter 103: Fixed Once (Ch.103)

King Jian sat at his desk, perusing over a file. Since he returned from the Eclipse Domain, there were dozens of reports awaiting his approval and he had been at work all night and into this late morning.

The Asvarian Stronghold was vast and all encompassing, from the floral meadows of the fairies to the mer seas, the hidden dwarven kingdoms and the settlements of the Asvarian people,

His territory reached across all species, there was a reason he was the supreme king. Though each specie had their own ruler, they all answered to King Jian... the dragons had long conquered the lands of the supernatural realm.

As such, King Jian did not only have to see to the troubles of his own people but ensure peace and harmony all through his stronghold, it was a task that was not as easily executed as it sounded.

The files heaped on King Jian’s tables reported numerous situations that required his input and advice as well as requests to dispatch flight patrols to the terrains considered most dangerous.

King Jian’s attention was focused on the files, his ears twitched slightly, picking up a sound from far down below his window where he sensed a familiar presence approaching.

A quiet grunt soon sounded from behind him when the large window was slightly opened and King Jian’s brows twitched.

"Xenon, I have said to use the door when you come into my study. Why do you insist on this method of arrival?" King Jian asked, he did not have to glance up to know it was Xenon.

Xenon was one King Jian had known from childhood, he could recognize the presence of the black dragon from miles away.

Equally, Xenon made no attempts to do anything in the right manner and King Jian knew that was because he had also lost that sense of etiquette and the will to honor protocols along with his humanity.

Though Xenon was only a quarter of the man King Jian used to know, King Jian still found him the one person he could trust the most, even with his life.

King Jian also knew many would disagree after the terrible event that happened decades back, but King Jian did not care for the opinion of anyone.

King Jian received no response to his words and he did not expect one either, Xenon could hardly form human speech though he understood it well enough.

"What is that look on your face to be?" King Jian asked as he finally glanced up to meet the cross glare Xenon had fixed on him.

Xenon’s eyes were narrowed and his arms were crossed over his chest, a dark brooding look in his eyes.

King Jian did not have to hear from Xenon to know what he had come for.

"Oh, this is about the wolf princess?" King Jian said knowingly and Xenon grumbled low in annoyance, his pointed glare demanding an explanation.

Had it been anyone else staring at King Jian in such a manner, that person would not live to take his next breath, but Xenon was always the only exception.

From Xenon’s eyes, King Jian understood the words he intended to say, he had come to speak up for the Eclipse Princess and King Jian wondered what exactly Rodrick had gotten up to.

King Jian had not concerned himself with the affairs of the Eclipse Princess, but he did hear she had awakened and was recovering just fine from the poison.

Poison... King Jian still could not understand why the Eclipse Princess had decided to do what she had but he had settled in his mind that he would not ponder over it.

Menarx reported he threatened her life, perhaps all she had done was simply in the bid to survive... that was the only reason she had risked her life in such a manner.

But choosing death in the bid to survive, it was a rather peculiar choice even for a wolf shifter as strange as the Eclipse Princess.

"I have left arrangements regarding her to Rodrick, I know nothing of whatever has you fuming." King Jian absolved himself of guilt before Xenon’s rage escalated.

Xenon huffed indignantly at King Jian’s denial, he was unwilling to believe King Jian had no hand in making the little wolf an attendant and Xenon did not appreciate the slight at all.

He had climbed all the way up here to seek an explanation and if he did not get anything reasonable, then he would go back to Rodrick and give the annoying man a piece of his mind... it was only that Xenon could not speak and so his claws would speak for him.

"Xenon, the laws of the Keep remain the laws. You may want to keep the Eclipse Princess on a throne and place a crown upon her head so she may live in bliss, but you must know that will only endanger her life." King Jian pointed out.

"The poisoning event was one thing... but it is enough to show the fragile and delicate wolf has no place by our side. The Asvarian nobles are cunning and unwelcoming to strangers, I will not place her in their sight."

"You have asked me to protect her...to keep her safe, then you should trust that I know Rodrick is capable of ensuring she does not fall to harm." King Jian said.

Xenon frowned slightly, his glare lingering on King Jian for a moment, though he was displeased, he understood King Jian’s words.

The little wolf was Princess only in her own domain, she could not be granted the same title here or it would raise discontent...but Xenon did not see why he had to care for the fragile egos of the Asvarian nobles.

The little wolf was his treasure, she certainly deserved a crown and a throne along with and Xenon decided Jian and his court could keep their reasons to themselves.

His treasure deserved only the best and Xenon would make certain to give it to her.

"What are you planning to do? You get that look on your face when you’re conspiring something." King Jian asked suspiciously.

Xenon huffed before he stormed away and jumped right out the window, tumbling down through the clouds before he took his dragon form.

"He is too attached... I am not certain what to make of this." King Jian murmured to himself with a sigh.

They were still unclear as to why Xenon’s wild haze had not manifested since he set eyes on the Eclipse Princess...was it truly her making? Or was Xenon just improving?

King Jian could not tell, but what he did know was that Xenon already held onto the Eclipse Princess like a lifeline...if it turned out all of this was just a coincidence, Xenon would be broken...

King Jian had fixed him once before but King Jian feared... would he be able to do it once again?

_______________

Neveah stood in an adjacent room to Lord Rodrick’s study, her eyes fixed ahead of her as Davina busied herself adjusting the sash around her dress.

Neveah had offered to dress her ownself but Davina would not have it, Neveah found it amusing that they kept reminding her she would not receive royal treatment here but ended up doing even more than her attendants did.

Though Neveah guessed it was only because they did not dare let her out of sight... again, it was amusing because Neveah was certain they eventually would.

All she had to do was wait, biding her time with a smile on her lips.

Waiting... she was good at that, she had waited seventeen years to get away from the Eclipse Palace.

Faking a smile and preventing others from knowing what she truly felt, Neveah was even better at that...it was all she had ever done at the Eclipse Domain.

"It is just the right size, I feared it would not fit but you look good in anything." Davina complimented as she laced up the back of the black dress she had brought for Neveah.

The dress was similar to what Davina was wearing, almost exactly so, it was only that while Davina’s dress was a dark blue like the first Neveah was given and silver embroidery here or there,

Neveah’s dress was a plain black, the fabric of the dress was light and breathable, it rested over Neveah’s form, the slight difference in size easily adjusted by the silver sash.

"It is a size bigger." Neveah replied in a blank tone.

"It was the best I could find on such short notice." Davina said with a sigh at Neveah’s tone.

"I do not mind." Neveah replied.

"You sound like you do mind." Davina pointed out.

Neveah passed a glance to Davina over her shoulder.

"I always sound like this." Neveah replied with a blank tone.

"I know you are not accustomed to servitude, but it is not as bad as you think, Neveah." Davina said with a sigh.

"Servitude? That word..." Neveah murmured but she did not speak further.
