Chapter 101: Attendant (Ch.101)

"The Lord Rodrick is her father?" Neveah’s wolf thought to her in a cross tone.

If Lord Rodrick was really as doted on by the Dragon King as Davina had revealed, then it was clear to Neveah that sending his daughter to her must have been the will of a certain someone.

Initially, Mernax was ordered to keep eyes on her but Neveah had not set eyes on the scowling red dragon since she regained consciousness and even Xenon...well, Neveah did not know what to think of him either.

"We know nothing about her, in turn... nothing comes as a surprise." Neveah thought back to her wolf with a casual tone.

"You are not bothered by it?" Neveah’s wolf asked her.

"Why should we be? Someone will have to keep an eye on us anyway. Better it is someone willing to answer our questions." Neveah thought back to her wolf.

Neveah followed quietly after Davina after that, just letting her gaze wander around the hallway, the very walls of the dragon keep, ancient and long standing yet still so enchantingly beautiful.

Unlike the cold and suffocating aura exuded off the walls of the eclipse palace, this dragon keep was cold indeed but it exuded an aura of mystery and there was an imposing air settled over it.

Neveah was not certain why, but she walked to the side, her hands stretched out and her fingers trailing over the walls of the keep as she passed.

The mysterious silver rock was cold to her touch, but Neveah did not loathe the cold, that chilling feeling was all she had known all her life.

To Neveah, it was now more friend than foe, there was no distinction between herself and that cold chill anymore, she had long become it, it’s very essence seeping into her heart, her blood stream and taking ahold of everything.

Making it such that despite the rare smiles that would sometimes make their way to her lips, there was never a light in her eyes...not even for a moment.

Neveah’s eyes were cold and dead, just like her heart was becoming and to her, something about this Dragon Keep reflected what she felt within.

In a completely unusual way, though she was one werewolf, all alone in a world of fire breathing creatures and their allies, she felt comforted...more so than she ever had in the Eclipse Palace.

So far, in her entire lifetime...or two lifetimes, Neveah had only felt this way in the Eclipse Hunt Pack.

"And we know well enough what happens when we get too comfortable somewhere..." Neveah’s wolf reminded through their mindlink.

"Truly...we do." Neveah affirmed as her hand which had been trailing the wall dropped to her side, clenching into a fist.

Neveah shook off her intrigue and any other feeling she had entertained just a moment ago, the one thing a prisoner was most at risk of was growing used to the walls closing in around.

Because once that happened, one would no longer be able to tell the difference between captivity... and true freedom.

The Dragon Keep... Neveah had seen only a glimpse of it, only a single hallway she walked through at this time, yet regardless of the captivating beauty of it... she had not come here of her own will.

No matter how comfortable the dress she wore was and how much of an improvement it was from what her father forced on her, it still was not a dress she had chosen for herself.

She was not walking down these halls because she chose to or heading to meet someone she was interested to meet,

No matter how much bigger the dungeon had become, the difference between captivity and true freedom was still clear to Neveah and if Neveah had anything to do with it...it always would be.

Perhaps there would never be a better place than the Eclipse Palace or the Dragon Keep, but Neveah had never been in need of a better place, all she had ever wanted was a place where she could feel...free.

"This is not it..." Neveah’s wolf thought to her.

"It is not." Neveah agreed.

"What do you plan to do?" Neveah’s wolf asked and Neveah thought over it for a moment before she shook her head.

"The best we can do for ourselves now is doing nothing at all...we wait, we watch and we prepare. Our chance will come...of this, I am certain." Neveah thought back to her wolf.

"What are you thinking about... and your eyes are glowing..." Davina’s voice drew Neveah out of her thoughts.

Neveah passed Davina a glance before she let her eyes flutter closed and settled her wolf, when Neveah’s eyes fluttered open again, it was back to normal.

"I am not a single entity..." Neveah replied in a blank tone and that was as much as she cared to explain, she could not be bothered with what Davina eventually concluded but Neveah guessed she understood.

Davina nodded and continued leading the way, they soon descended a stairwell and arrived to a lower floor and after walking for a while longer, they finally arrived at a double door.

Davina then came to a stop, turning to face Neveah who had reverted to her characteristic reserved nature...after speaking so much, Neveah was already tired.

There was so much that had already been said about the Dragon Keep and Neveah knew there was still so much left unsaid, if one thing was sure...her days would not be easy.

"In here. This is Lord Rodrick’s study. I’m sure you can find the way if ever you are summoned here again but let us hope you are not." Davina said and Neveah raised a brow, nodding once to show she heard Davina’s words.

"You do not seem to prefer responding with words, and you do not speak much either. All of these, you will need to adjust."

"I do not mind it, but when confronted with those of higher rank, you will need to be more docile."

"If asked a question, respond in words even if you do not wish to. Everyone within this keep is capable of taking a life with a wave of their hands and most are quick to anger, you will have to be extra cautious." Davina said.

Rules...it was one after the other and though Neveah understood Davina was looking out for her, she truly found it distasteful.

She was already speaking a lot, it was because she found Davina reliable enough and to return the favor of telling her so much, but if speaking to anyone else was to be enforced, Neveah guessed they would see about it once it got to that point.

"I see." Neveah replied again, her tone blank. Davina opened her mouth to speak again but deciding against it, she lifted a hand to knock on the wooden door.

"Enter." A voice sounded from within and Davina nodded to Neveah before she pushed open the door and led the way in.

As they headed into the study, Neveah took note of the fact that it was majorly an office with a large mahogany table and some book shelves overflowing with books.

There was a middle aged man seated at the table, with a pair of glasses on his eyes as he peered down at a book and took note of some things.

Neveah assumed this was Lord Rodrick who was the butler in charge of all affairs of the Dragon Keep

"Dav, you are here." Lord Rodrick acknowledged without looking up, he was focused on the files on his desk.

"Yes father, I brought her along...as you instructed." Davina replied.

"Oh, right!" Lord Rodrick said, glancing up from his file immediately, he pulled off his glasses and placed the file aside before rising to his feet and heading around his table.

"Neveah...was it?" Lord Rodrick asked.

"Yes, sir." Neveah replied and Lord Rodrick raised a brow but said nothing of Neveah’s address.

"You have received the healer’s words?" Lord Rodrick asked.

"I have." Neveah replied.

"Good then, Davina will show you to the healer’s hall afterwards...but for now..." Lord Rodrick trailed off, glancing over Neveah before shaking her head.

"This won’t do." Lord Rodrick said.

Neveah raised a single brow, she was not certain what exactly Lord Rodrick was referring to and so she just stared blankly at him.

"Dav, in a moment, go fetch a black dress that will fit the child." Lord Rodrick said, before averting his gaze back to Neveah’s questioning look.

"As My Liege is yet to clarify your title, all matters related to you have been entrusted to me. As I am sure you must have heard, all residing within this keep have their duties and must earn their keep."

"After giving it some thought, each Lord of the King’s guard are assigned a personal attendant...all except one."

" I have decided that henceforth, you are to be Lord Xenon’s personal attendant. As personal attendant to Lord Xenon of Onyx Scales...it is a necessity that you are dressed in his color." Lord Rodrick explained.
