Chapter 67: Eye For An Eye

LIAM

As always, seeing that smug smirk at the corner of Kian’s mouth makes me flush with fury. Guess this thing will never get old. Seeing him makes my blood boil with anger and electricity. Gods...this is even more complicated than I thought.

As I figured, kissing this man was a bad idea.

Kian approaches Roy’s desk, his expression smug but there is a fire in his eyes that only I can see. It sets my soul on fire.

"Your Excellency," Kian acknowledges, reaching out his hand for a handshake.

Roy gets on his feet and takes Kian’s hand, "It’s a pleasure to have you here with us today, Supreme Commander." He says grumpily. Typical Roy. "Please take a seat." He gestures at the chair set across from his desk.

"Delightfully." Kian offers him the most ingenuous, humble smile as he takes a seat.

I start to follow his motion and get myself seated but before I can accomplish that, Roy stops me.

"I didn’t tell you to sit." Roy looks at me skeptically as he lowers himself behind the desk.

"I didn’t ask you." I return sardonically as I get myself seated.

Roy grimaces at my snarky remark and Kian stifles a snort. I take in a silent breath to control the frenzied beating of my heart inside my chest.

Roy clears his throat and slips his stoic demeanor back into its place, "So, I will cut directly to the topic." He turns to Kian, "Commander, I had the crown princess summon you the other day. I hope it didn’t trouble you. I had her elaborate the situation to you, and you agreed to cooperate with us if the information is correct."

"Certainly." Kian nods his head, not looking at me. It makes me wonder what makes me more miserable. Him looking at me or him not looking at me. Whatever it is, it makes me taste vinegar in my mouth. "I have agreed to join the alliance with your country to handle the situation at hand."

My eyes swing between Roy and Kian. They both are the rulers of their own Kingdoms. And, naturally, they can hold this kind of meeting and all. But the question is why am I here, hooked between them? And what are they talking about? Are they talking about Nyxvarral? What the hell is going on in this damn room?!

"This is a great pleasure to work with you for the time being, Commander." Roy nods in acknowledgment. "I hope your cooperation will greater results."

"Certainly." Kian then, at last, glances my way, "I am assuming His Highness, the third prince, will be the envoy from Solaryn."

I am so damn sure that my heart just stopped beating for a damn moment. But I don’t show it. I keep my expression stern and annoyed. I clench my fist to keep my emotions in check. If I slip up even a single thing, Roy will put two and two together. He is not a king for naught.

"Certainly." Roy nods his head, "The past envoys most possibly have perished in Nyxvarral, this is what our intelligence community informs us. I would like to appoint my son to scout the situation there."

I cock an eyebrow, "What are you talking about, Your Majesty?"

"Oh, it appears that I have not elaborated the situation to you, Liam." Roy’s expression is neutral as if he is not pushing me into the heina’s den—yet again.

I give him a skeptical look.

"Apparently, the envoys I have sent to Nyxvarral to invite King William, have not returned yet. Our intelligence community has got some interesting information on the Kingdom that it has fallen into some suspicious individual’s hands, and they are conspiring to wage war within the continent. Envoys are most likely dead. So I need you to scout the situation there." Roy finishes; his expression is stonier than a stone, and deep grooves are creasing his face. "Commander, who will you be sending there as your envoy?"

Kian looks like he is contemplating the question. After a moment he smiles and then says, "I plan to go there myself to keep a tab on the matter."

Gods only know what this man is thinking because I have a very bad feeling about this. My stomach twitches as I wait for him to explain the reason behind his decision.

"All my subordinates are all capable people. They know their jobs well." Kiam starts, "But I intend to go there myself to see if there is actually anything that I need to be concerned about."

This is not an explanation. This is an excuse and it is the most terrible one I have ever heard. Gods...I have stayed with him for over a month, and he still hasn’t learned how to lie or make accurate excuses fluently yet.

I want to facepalm myself, disappointed that I haven’t managed to educate him properly. But I keep my hands firmly planted on my lap and maintain a stoic demeanor.

Kian eyes me out of the corner of his eyes and his tongue darts out to lick his lips. The memory of when he slurped my tongue in his mouth flashes in my mind, and I flush my breath and stutter. I immediately fish out my hand towel and wipe my non-existent sweats to hide my flushed face from Roy.

"Ah, I see." Roy nods, not minding his excuse at all as if it doesn’t really bother him, which is true. Roy has nothing to do with who Kian chooses as his envoy.

I clear my throat, composing my expression, and look at Roy, my eyes sharp, "What do I get if I go there as your envoy?"

"What do you want?" Roy returns, unfazed by my confrontation. "As long as it doesn’t cause a civil war." He adds.

I smirk, "But I think it will, Your Majesty. I want you to call off my engagement with Kelly."

Roy pauses, assessing me silently. After a moment he speaks up, "Alright. As long as you do your assignment properly."

My smirk widens triumphantly.

Eye for an eye.
