The only place Sophie Smith could think of as peaceful now was the restroom.
She hurriedly walked toward the restroom, and just as she stepped in, she was pulled back out and into a warm, broad, yet incredibly familiar embrace.
"A-Asher Land..."
How did he manage to follow her so stealthily?
"Why did you come here?" His voice was hard to read, and Sophie was still trying to gauge his thoughts. She thought, maybe he meant she shouldn’t have come here.
"I didn’t want to come, it’s—it’s Mr. Davis..."
"He forced you to come?"
Forced?
Probably.
She nodded awkwardly.
He just stood there, somehow giving her an overwhelming sensation, and she tried to push him away. She pushed against his chest with her hand, but if he didn’t want to move, there was no way she could budge him.
"Asher Land, if you don’t want to see me, then I’ll leave." She pouted. After all, who would really want to see him getting engaged to another woman here?
That wasn’t his intention at all; he wanted to see her, very much so. But not in this setting, not under these circumstances; he just felt deeply sorry for her.
"I’m sorry, Sophie..." His voice was unmistakably filled with disappointment.
"There’s nothing to be sorry for." She tried to curl her lips and make her tone cheerful, "I know you’re forced to get engaged to Irene, I trust you."
She knew that Asher Land wasn’t invincible anymore; he wasn’t a god. He couldn’t get everything he wanted just by his will alone. She had begun to realize this ever since Nathan Land crippled his left arm.
And his temporary submission to the old man, getting engaged to Irene, seemed to her like a wise choice.
It wasn’t that she was magnanimous, it wasn’t that she didn’t care; she simply loved him, genuinely didn’t want him to suffer any more pain because of her.
She also knew that he loved her the same way, not any less than she loved him. Everything he did was only to take her and Alexander away from here, away from this troublesome place, to live their original life.
"You’re still here now, won’t your father and Irene be looking for you soon? Maybe you should leave first, don’t let them get suspicious."
"It’s fine." He glanced at his watch, "There’s still a few dozen minutes. I only want to spend more time with you right now, that’s all."
His handsome face showed a trace of fatigue, his brows slightly furrowed; she knew he certainly didn’t wish to go out and socialize with those people.
Ha, all of a sudden, she felt like they were really like star-crossed lovers, just like in the TV dramas, deeply in love but unable to be together. Perhaps, they might be even more tragic.
Like Mr. Butterfly and Ms. Butterfly? Romeo and Juliet?
She chuckled at the idea that popped into her head for no apparent reason, involuntarily curving her lips.

"Before meeting you, I always thought I was a very ordinary person. But after meeting you, I’ve come to realize that there’s nothing ordinary about my life anymore." She spoke each word clearly to him; if they were really Mr. Butterfly and Ms. Butterfly, Romeo and Juliet, how breathtakingly intense it would be?
