Chapter 52 - When It Comes to Betrayal, I'm a Professional

Kasajirō Clan's First Secret Workshop.

Higashi Shuuichi stepped once more into that familiar, shadow-wreathed place.

"Does Lord Yunoi still need experimental material?" Shuuichi asked, feigning curiosity.

"Yes, but let's keep a low profile for now," Yunoi Yōgaku replied without suspicion. "Because of that Zaraki Kenpachi situation, the other noble families are watching us closely."

"Understood, Lord Yunoi."

Shuuichi's eyes swept casually over the training grounds nearby—still quieter than they should've been.

Soon, the two of them entered Yunoi's private chamber deep within the facility. Once the heavy door sealed behind them, not even sound could slip through.

"That damn Zaraki reacted too quickly," Yunoi muttered, a hint of regret in his voice. "He barely let us wear down Mayu-sama's private Shinigami before breaking the stalemate."

"This outcome is still acceptable," Shuuichi offered comfortingly. "When I was in the Human World, I learned a saying: 'Greed will choke you faster than hunger.'"

"True enough," Yunoi nodded. "But while we can't make bold moves right now, I need you to take a trip soon—go investigate the Zaraki District in North Rukongai."

"The Zaraki District? That's... the 80th District, right?"

"Yes. That little girl always trailing behind Zaraki claimed it's where he's from."

"And you want me to...?"

"I want to know what's really there," Yunoi said, voice low. "How could someone with power like that stay invisible for so long? If you hadn't stumbled upon him, how many more years would he have remained hidden? There must be a secret."

His logic was sound—perfectly rational.

But what Yunoi didn't understand... was that Zaraki Kenpachi wasn't someone you could decipher with logic.

He had power that could tear half of Soul Society asunder—if his body could withstand it, a fully unleashed Seal Breaker could challenge Yamamoto Genryūsai himself. And yet he preferred to suppress his own strength, just to savor drawn-out fights with worthy opponents. He'd drown in a shallow pond if it meant he could bleed and smile while doing it.

This kind of mentality was alien unless you knew the man.

"Understood, Lord Yunoi," Shuuichi answered respectfully.

So far, everything was unfolding perfectly.

After leaving the chamber, Shuuichi glanced once more at the training grounds. There were clearly more people here than last time, but still nowhere near the thriving scene he remembered.

And Yunoi himself had said there were no large-scale operations currently.

Which could only mean one thing.

"Don't tell me that undercover Shinigami... Kisaragi Qin'etsu, is still alive?"

It'd be easy to confirm—just sneak back to the hidden workshop where he was last held.

But this time was different.

He no longer had Kyōka Suigetsu, and the stakes had grown too high. Back then, curiosity and freedom had let him wander. Now, with the Hollow Chrysalis Project underway, every step carried consequence. One mistake, and no one would save him—not even if they wanted to.

His web of allies was still fragile, his future only potential.

Besides, Kisaragi's life or death didn't matter to him.

"...But maybe," Shuuichi thought, "maybe this could be my offering."

Originally, he'd considered coming clean to Urahara Kisuke directly. But that approach reeked of desperation—it would only raise Kisuke's suspicions.

This? This gave him credibility.

A traitor with a cause always seemed more sincere than one who simply folded.

"Yep," Shuuichi chuckled bitterly to himself. "I'm really playing the three-faced fox now, huh?"

Blame the bastard who tossed him from Earth into this world without a cheat code. No system, no simulator, no overpowered ability.

If he'd had even a fraction of Zaraki or Aizen's talent, would he really be groveling for a fragment of the Soul King's nail?

Tears were a waste of time.

With his expression composed once more, Shuuichi departed the First Secret Workshop and headed for Squad 4's barracks.

Why not Squad 2? Please—he was technically on duty. Skipping off to visit Kasajirō was already pushing it. If he didn't check back in, Yamada Seinosuke would absolutely write a ten-thousand-character report to Unohana about his "negligence."

Besides, he needed a proper excuse to meet Urahara Kisuke.

Saying "Hey, I knew you knew" wasn't going to cut it.

The Kisaragi affair would be his token—but not the conversation starter.

Night fell. Shuuichi, for once, wandered Seireitei with no intent of returning home.

The sky was black, the wind sharp.

A perfect night for murder.

One hour later. Kasajirō Clan's Third Secret Workshop.

This facility stored completed, yet unassigned, Makyou-tō.

By morning, every Shinigami and Makyou-tō soldier stationed there would be dead.

Only one individual assigned to the facility—recently transferred—would be unaccounted for.

Also missing: the Makyou-tō known as Raika, the same weapon long meant for Shuuichi.

Next morning, Seireitei remained calm on the surface.

Until a barely-awake Higashi Shuuichi arrived at Squad 4, only to be summoned by an abrupt order from Kasajirō Mayu.

"What happened, Lord Yunoi?" Shuuichi asked as he arrived.

Mayu had not yet returned, but Yunoi Yōgaku was already pacing inside his study.

"Last night," Yunoi said grimly, "our Third Secret Workshop was attacked by a traitor. Every stationed operative is dead. And worst of all... we lost that Makyou-tō."

He stared straight into Shuuichi's eyes.

But Shuuichi's look of stunned disbelief never wavered. It was flawless.

"You mean... the Raika?" Shuuichi's shock turned swiftly to rage. "That Makyou-tō was meant for me! Damn it!"
