Chapter 51 - This Is the Feeling of Powerlessness
Dusk. A bleeding sun dipped low in the sky.
From within Seireitei, all that could be seen was a crimson blaze.
The same hue painted the shattered barracks of Squad 11.
The battle between captain-level Shinigami had raged for nearly an hour. What began as a one-on-one clash—Zaraki Kenpachi vs. Higashi Shuuichi—had escalated into a melee: Zaraki vs. Shuuichi + Muguruma Kensei... then Zaraki vs. Shuuichi + Kensei + Kamikawa Renosuke.
If you included the earlier defeat of Kiganjō Kenpachi, Zaraki was effectively going four-on-one.
A record-worthy battle for any ordinary Shinigami to brag about for generations.
But judging from the flicker of disappointment in Unohana Retsu's eyes, Shuuichi realized—it wasn't enough.
Setting aside Shuuichi, that strange creature of Schrödinger-level ambiguity when it came to strength...
Muguruma Kensei, the benchmark for average captain-tier power, was just barely holding his own.
Kamikawa Renosuke, the long-serving Captain of Squad 3, was withered, old, and crippled by injuries sustained two decades prior from Baraggan's aging ability—his strength now not far above Kensei's.
Kiganjō? A joke. He ascended to "Kenpachi" by killing the weakest in history—Kosuke Kenpachi. He was barely worth ten Kenseis.
And yet, these four could match the current Zaraki Kenpachi.
Zaraki showed neither defeat nor dominance—an even brawl, no more, no less.
"You've repressed yourself too long, Zaraki... have you forgotten what you used to be?"
Through the sustained battle, Unohana confirmed her suspicions.
Zaraki was still strong. No question.
But not that strong—not the one she was waiting for.
Not the boy who, all those centuries ago, left a scar on her chest from a single hidden slash. That raw, wild blade was long gone.
Disappointed, Unohana turned and left. She no longer cared how the battle ended.
This Zaraki... was not the one.
But the fight went on—well, it wanted to.
"Wanted" because Zaraki was still brimming with bloodlust.
But the Head-Captain had had enough.
"Enough of this nonsense."
Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni, standing still, crushed the air with his presence alone.
Shuuichi withdrew his blade without a word. He knew better.
Zaraki, of course, didn't. He charged in recklessly.
The result?
A complete defeat.
Even in his declining years, Yamamoto was still a monster. Zaraki, self-sealing as he was, never stood a chance.
If Unohana hadn't publicly acknowledged Zaraki's right to the title of Kenpachi, and the other captains hadn't accepted it—he'd be headed for Muken, or at least a brief visit to the Maggot's Nest.
And yet, lying on the ground receiving emergency treatment from Shuuichi, Zaraki still had the audacity to mutter his desire:
"Let's do this again sometime—with you, Kensei, Kamikawa... and her. Somewhere remote."
Shuuichi just rolled his eyes.
Him, Kensei, Kamikawa? Fine.
But Unohana Retsu?
No remote location could contain the chaos those two would unleash. Unless you opened up Muken and threw them both inside.

But that was impossible.
In the original timeline, it took the looming threat of Yhwach for Unohana to agree to such madness. Otherwise, she would never have sacrificed herself like that.
And what the hell was Zaraki thinking with that line?
"I think I recognize your captain..."
Unohana had waited for him for centuries. That wasn't just cryptic—it was tragic. She even learned new healing techniques to extend their eventual fight.
As for the Shinigami Zaraki had "accidentally" killed during his rampage—many of whom had ties to the Kasajirō clan?
"What? That happened?"
"No way. Wasn't it those guys we locked up in the Maggot's Nest?"
Power comes with privilege.
In Soul Society, it especially does.
The next day, Kasajirō Clan estate, in the family head's study.
"Can one of you—just one of you—explain to me WHY that Zaraki is so damn strong?! WHY he now bears the name of Kenpachi?! WHY he's been made the Captain of Squad 11?!"
Kasajirō Mayu was beyond furious, throwing priceless antiques to the ground as Yunoi Yōgaku and Higashi Shuuichi stood in silence.
"My lord," Shuuichi said calmly, "Zaraki's power caught me off guard during our fight. I didn't think he'd been suppressing himself."
"And considering he's just an ordinary soul from Rukongai, possessing that kind of strength is unprecedented," Yunoi added, attempting to defend Shuuichi.
But the truth was—Yunoi was confused, too.
Where had Zaraki's terrifying strength come from? Raw talent?
Could a mere Rukongai soul really possess talent like that?
If so, then aside from Yamamoto himself, Zaraki Kenpachi might be the most gifted soul Yunoi had ever seen.
"And now what? After so many of our clan's Shinigami have died, Yamamoto has the gall to convince Central 46 to just... let it go?!"
That, more than anything, left Mayu enraged.
The greatest humiliation of his life.
"With all due respect, Lord Mayu," Shuuichi spoke softly, "If Central 46 really has taken that stance, then we won't be able to touch Zaraki for the foreseeable future..."
They couldn't beat him. Couldn't ambush him without risk.
And if they tried to pressure him directly?
He might just show up on their doorstep and start another bloodbath.
There were no moves left to make.
Even Shuuichi couldn't think of a viable path forward.
But that was fine.
Because this—this—was exactly the outcome he had foreseen.
Helpless rage. Powerlessness.
And in Mayu's gaze, Shuuichi caught it: an even deeper hunger for power.
Yes... that's it. Rage and frustration... only those can make men lose their reason.
Smiling inwardly, Shuuichi turned and followed Yunoi Yōgaku out of the room.
