Chapter 253: A raven’s pair quest [10]

Coco grabbed Alithe, pulling him close to her body in a swift movement as she swung herself up on a tree branch.

She pressed her back against the tree, her arn snaking around his torso and pulling them flush against each other with her free hand finding its way to his mouth, her palm covering it tightly to muffle any sound he might make.

Coco was quick to summon a vine, the slender tendril appearing in a flash as she commanded it.

The vine snaked through the air, its thin form stretching out towards the adjacent branch as it coiled around the sturdy limb, the vine’s surface clinging to the bark as it wrapped around the branch, stabilizing the branch the two of them are on.

The vine’s strength was evident as it stabilized the branch, its hold firm enough to eliminate any creaking or rustling that could give away their presence.

Satisfied with what she did, she looked down, her gaze fixed on what she previously saw in the distance, and all Alithe could do was widen his eyes with surprise, his body going tense in her grasp.

Alithe was about to push himself away from Coco, but he heard a distinct sound near them.

His head snapped down, his gaze zeroing in the direction where he heard the sound came from, and to his surprise, Coco was already looking in that direction.

He would have questioned the woman before him how she could tell that there was something in the dark, but a movement from his peripheral vision caught his attention and made him bite his tongue.

Something moved out of the darkness and stepped into a clearing, its form shrouded in shadows.

Coco’s and Alithe’s eyes squinted, trying to make out what it was, but their vision was obstructed by the darkness looming all around the forest.

All they could see was a vague shape of something big and thick with ears as tall as a wild grass, its form moving through the darkness with an unnatural fluidity that did not quite match their size and bulk.

Whatever it was, it was making its way towards them, each step bringing it closer.

The monsters suddenly stopped and were standing together in the middle of the forest, their forms barely visible due to how dark it was.

However, one of them suddenly moved into a moonlit area with the remaining ones following behind it, the forest’s shadows fell away slightly, revealing that they were actually rabbits, but larger than an average human height.

Coco swallowed thickly, her eyes focused on the monsters.

Their fur was a soft white color, their forms almost glowing in the small flickers of moonlight that broke through the branches above, but, when the moon broke free of the cloud cover and shone brightly on the monsters, the color of their fur shimmered and changed, transforming from soft white to a muddy brown.

Three monstrously large rabbits..

All three stood in the middle of the forest, their former shadowy forms are now visible under the moonlight.

Each rabbit significantly larger than the previous one, their long ears twitching and their noses wrinkled, as they sniffed the air in confusion.

"Intruder."

"Hunt."

"Humans."

"Lots."

The three rabbits spoke to each other in a series of short words and noises, their communication efficient and compact, using single words to convey their thoughts and intentions to each other.

Despite the lack of full sentences, their meanings were clear and concise.

Coco’s eyebrows furrowed in fear, the hair on the back of her neck rising as she observed the way the rabbits mutter words to one another.

They were clearly intelligent and had developed a streamlined method of communication that allowed them to communicate quickly and effectively, which only made them more frightful.

The three brown monsters bounced on their hind legs as they communicated, their ears flicking and twitching with each sound.

The words they exchanged were brief, yet the meaning was clear as each monster’s body language and facial expressions added context to their words— their beady black and red eyes boring in the distance.

Rustle. Rustle. Rustle.

One of the rabbits suddenly perked up, its ears straightening and its head turning towards a different direction as it let out a soft, urgent sound, its paw tapping against the ground as if signalling the others.

They paused their conversation, their heads turning towards the source of the sound, their bodies tensing with anticipation.

Whatever they had heard had immediately caught their attention, their instincts taking over as they waited in the silence, but then, the rabbit who seemed to be the leader of the other two turned back to its companions.

"Babies."

"Humans."

"Danger."

"Hungry."

The other two rabbits immediately responded, their heads turning towards the direction that the first rabbit was signaling.

The mud colored rabbits moved away from where Coco and Alithe were hidden, the creatures hopping away in the darkness of the night, their large forms moving silently through the forest.

The sound of the monsters’ movements faded as they disappeared into the distance, their forms swallowed up by the darkness once again.

Coco waited until she couldn’t see them anymore before tapping the vines beneath her boots, then, with a thought, the vine wrapped around her waist instead, its strong form coiling around her figure like a snug belt.

Before Alithe could even realize what was happening, Coco shifted her weight and held him tight against her.

The vine started to lower them down to the ground, its slender form flexing and coiling around Coco as it slowly descended.

Coco set her feet on the ground, her boots pressing into the soft forest floor, with the vine withdrawing, slipping back into the ground where it first sprouted, and releasing her grip on Alithe, her eyes scanning their surroundings.

"I can’t hear them anymore." Alithe informed Coco, his ears straining to pick up any sound.

"Good." Coco mumbled and walked towards where the rabbits disappeared from, "Let’s go save your pair."
