New World, New Life: I Became A Bigshot In The Ancient World-Chapter 312: STRANGER
The guard moved out, signalling to the other guards to head to search that hut.
Adam and Samantha’s expressions didn’t change, but their hearts thumped.
Adam followed, trying not to come off as suspicious.
"There’s no one in the hut. A baby can’t be there without us knowing." He said.
He had said that if someone came searching for the child, they would hand her over, but he had also come to become attached to the child. He also couldn’t bear to let go.
The guard turned to him.
"We have to obey orders, and the orders is to search everywhere." After saying this, he then gestured to the rest of the guards.
They headed to the hut. The hut was actually a shed.
The guard opened the door and began to search while the rest of the guards stood outside. They couldn’t all fit in the shed.
The shed itself was small, and there wasn’t much in it. There were simple farming tools like hoes and knives and a stack of hay in the corner.
The guard walked into the shed, looking around.
Adam and Samantha held their breath, but the guard didn’t look where Evelyn’s small form was hidden beneath a small stack of hay.
He turned to the other guards and shook his head, signalling for them to leave. It was obvious he also didn’t believe that there could be a child in the shed.
After the guards left, Adam and Samantha didn’t utter a word.
Adam left the shed, following the guards to make sure they actually left, acting like he was just returning to the house.
He walked to the neighbors house, discussing curiously.
"Mister Baker, say, do you have a clue where these guards are from?" He asked.
The man he called Mister Baker was an elderly man. He was standing in front of his own house, also looking curiously at the receding figures of the guards.
Hearing the question from his neighbor, he turned away from them and turned to Adam. He shook his head.
"I don’t know. But they’re not from here. They should have come from the neighbouring fief." Then he asked. "They’re searching for a little girl. Must be the daughter of some Aristocrat, or even nobles." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Adam nodded. "I see."
He exchanged a few more words with the man before turning to leave.
"It’s almost time to have our meal." He said. "My wife and daughter are waiting."
"Oh," Mister Baker said, a flicker of remembrance crossing his face. "I made something for sweet little Eve. Her favorite. I’ll be back with it." He said, turning to enter his cottage.
Adam nodded. "Thank you, Mister Baker." He said.
Soon, Mister Baker came out with a small basket covered with a small white cloth.
Just as the name said, Mister Baker was a baker.
He handed the basket to Adam. "Give this to Eve for me." He said.
Adam nodded.
"Alright."
Once he was sure all the guards had left the neighborhood, he returned to the shed.
"They’re gone." He whispered to Samantha.
Samantha sighed in relief, quickly going to take Evelyn out.
The couple exchanged glances. Since they had chosen this way, then they had to make sure no one discovered Evelyn.
If anyone found out she was actually the child being searched for... It was right to say it wouldn’t end well for them.
Before Evelyn could speak, Adam quickly opened the basket, letting the scent of freshly baked bread, buns, and small cakes fill the air.
Little Evelyn’s eyes instantly found the basket, her eyes lighting up.
"Grandpa Baker, Grandpa Baker." She said, reaching her hand out towards the basket.
The couple couldn’t help but smile as they took her out of the shed to the cottage.
After that incident, they became even more careful.
The couple sold the expensive dress she had worn when they first found her. They had long gotten clothes made for her but hadn’t sold that dress. Now that guards had searched the house, they were fortunate to have hidden the clothes well.
The only thing they didn’t sell was the necklace. Instead, they kept it safely hidden, as they knew that it could be used to find out the girl’s true identity.
As time went on, the couple’s love for her only continued to grow, and Evelyn also came to deeply love the people she now knew as her parents, totally forgetting the memories she had as a baby.
She grew up pampered and protected, the best she could out of sight.
Adam and Samantha packed their things, sold their land and house, and moved from where they lived in the South all the way to the East.
There, they also bought a house and land.
Evelyn grew up to be a beautiful young woman.
Adam and Samantha noticed the subtle grace in her movement even though she grew up surrounded by commoners.
In a new place, one where people didn’t know them, people were even less suspicious, only assuming that Evelyn was the couple’s daughter.
The couple always carefully avoided areas close to the wealthy.
The East had very fertile land, and there were a lot of forests. Things were relatively easier.
The couple didn’t need to explain whether she was a relative’s child or not.
Whenever people became a bit attentive, the couple would move to another Fief.
Finally, the couple left the East entirely, instead moving to Amberale’s capital, Belonmusk.
Their lives remained peaceful and tranquil.
But that changed when something neither of them would have ever expected happened.
Adam and Samantha had been away and were not yet back.
Evelyn was home alone as was mostly the usual since her parents barely allowed her to work with them in their piece of land.
The sky had turned dark even though the night had not yet come, and the loud, booming sound of thunder was heard, accompanied by flashes of lightening across the sky. Strong gusts of wind blew, taking with it leaves and other objects.
In the cottage, Evelyn flinched slightly, caught off guard by the sudden sound of thunder.
"It looks like a storm is inevitable." She muttered to herself as she lit a few more candles.
She bent forward a bit and lit a candle, placing it on the dining table.
The candle illuminated her face, revealing a beautiful face, pure and youthful.
Luscious black hair cascaded down her back, her full red lips pursed slightly in thought, and dazzling red eyes stared at the flame from the candle and the melting candle wax slowly dripping down the candle, the reflection of the candle showing in her eyes.
She was putting on plain clothes, but the plain clothes did nothing to hide her beauty.
A sudden knock on the door quickly took her out of her thoughts, her eyes moving away from the melting candle and candle wax as she straightened up.
She quickly moved to open the door, thinking that it was her parents. She didn’t want them to get caught up in the storm.
Thinking of the sound of the knock, it sounded a bit urgent, not like how her parents would knock. It made a small frown appear on her face.
But Evelyn didn’t pay too much attention, thinking it was probably because of the weather condition.
Of course her parents would want to seek the shelter of their cottage quickly. They didn’t know if the sound of the thunder would make her unable to hear the knocking, so they could only knock urgently.
But as she approached the door, she couldn’t help but mutter with worry.
What if on the way home the storm came? Wouldn’t that put them in danger?
But it was good that they had arrived now.
"Oh no, mother and father should have sought shelter. They should not have come back home with the looming stor—"
But when she opened the door, her words stopped before she could even complete the words she was saying.
The looming storm made the sky turn dark, but even in the darkness, she could still clearly see that the person outside the door was not her parents.
Instead of her parents standing there, it was a man she hadn’t seen before. She noticed he was quite taller than her.
Evelyn was confused, but she was also cautious.
She reduced the gap in the door, whole fixing her eyes on the stranger.
"Excuse me... What might you need?" She asked.
The man seemed to stagger a bit and Evelyn noticed he wasn’t in good condition. He was possibly injured. She wasn’t sure as the darkness wasn’t making it an easy task.
An injured person in the storm would not be good.
But the man couldn’t stay here either. She couldn’t invite him in. It wasn’t right for an unmarried lady to be alone with a man. It would also be unsafe for her.
With that thought, she opened her mouth to ask the man to find someplace else whole getting ready to close the door.
But before she could even utter a word, the man pushed past her and entered the house.
